What do most people use to tape their mouths shut?

I use 3M's blue painters tape for "delicate surfaces" from Lowe's. I read about that in one of Gerald's posts.

I use 2" wide 3M Micropore Surgical Tape. It stays on very well and comes off without peeling your skin away! Always a plus in my book...

You might want to experiment with 3M Blue Delicate Release 2" wide masking tape. 3M's product number is "2080" and you can find it in the Lowe's paint department...or Home Depot...etc.

The stuff is cheap...and does the job nicely.

When you apply it, use a strip about 8" long....fold the ends down about 1/2" (for removal "handles").
Using a 8" long strip helps to prevent "blowouts"....because 2" of tape on both sides of your mouth helps give the whole assembly strength.

In the morning when you are ready to remove it, pull parallel with your face. Don't remove it by pulling directly away from your face. That's uncomfortable.

Gerald I wonder how this compares to some of the medical use tape?? Do you find it easier to remove. I tried Hypafix white tape. It was recommended by my respiratory therapist. It is used for medical dressings and is slightly stretchy. But it really sticks, perhaps a little too much and is expensive.

Gerald or rested gal have you had any skin reactions to the tape?

After using tape, you may try baby oil applied to the tape to remove the adhesive more easily. I have used this with bandaids on my kids for years. When I wanted one off for them, I would put baby oil on it before bed. It was off before morning all on its own. Works well if you give it a bit to soak in.

I use the Milk of Magnesia trick that has been posted in this forum (by Karen?). Smear MoM over the areas where I'm going to put the tape, let it dry (sometimes I use the cool setting of my hair dryer), then tape as usual. In the morning there is NO PAIN at all taking the tape off, unless I missed a spot. I use Nexcare gentle paper tape.

Ms.S, no, I haven't had any reaction to the painters tape. As Gerald described, when removing it, I press it down firmly against my skin while rolling it off backwards. Never a problem. A time or two when I forgot to remove it that way and was pulling it somewhat away from me, it left a few red spots that were like a slight "rug burn."

The baby oil for removal, or milk of magnesia for pre-tape application sound like good ideas. I haven't needed to use them, but those are smart tricks.

You don't need to shave every day

I also use the 2" wide paper tape and also found that 3M's 1 1/2" water proof tape works just as well, the adhesive is a little less aggressive and makes for easy removal. It is a little thicker and has a cushion effect, which makes it a great bridge of the nose protector when wearing a nasal full face mask. Both tapes are hypoallergenic and leave no red marks after removal. Good luck.

Ms. S....

I've had no reaction to the adhesive on the #2080 3M painters tape. When I apply it, I start the application in the middle...over my lips....and work outward to both sides. I press down hard...and have no problems.

Although I've not experimented with baby oil or milk of magnesia, I suspect that the use of either "release agent" might increase the possibility of "blow outs".

I use the blue painter's tape without a chin strap, with great results, provided I shave that evening before going to bed. Going one day without shaving means I'll need to wear a chin strap to make sure the tape will hold. Going two days without shaving means that the tape will not prevent mouth leaks, even with the chin strap. One roll has lasted almost six months.

After reading here about 3M Delicate release blue painter's tape, I went to Lowe's and bought a roll of the 1 1/2 inch. It is working much better for me than the micropore tape that I had been using. It stays on and does its job, and it comes off more easily in the morning without taking the top layer of skin with it. I'm rellieved. I thought I would have to stop taping. Now, as backup, I've also learned about using oil to help the tape release if needed. Thanks, everyone, for all the good info in this thread.
