Re: ResScan won't recognize the reader or the card

Secret,

Interestingly, my ACS driver is v1.1.6.1 dated 6/15/2009. I believe it's from the ACS site. You can try uninstalling the driver (uninstall button on the Driver tab) and installing my version. If you can't find 1.1.5.1, PM me with your email address and I'll send you a copy.

If you want to try this, uninstall the driver, unplug the card reader, reboot w/o the card reader plugged in, install the driver then plug in the card reader. Be prepared for a rough ride. It took quite a number of tries for me to get it working, and I do this for a living!

One thing to try FIRST. Shut down the PC and restart in safe mode without the reader plugged in. That's what it took on my PC to complete the driver installation properly. Then restart in normal mode. Also, once setup, never unplug the reader when the PC is on. That seems to corrupt the driver. Why ResMed is using such an obscure memory card is beyond me.

Secret,

I have the identical ACS reader with XP SP3 and the driver I noted previously and it works fine. I had to play with my card guides a bit, but it works without a hitch now.

Note that I said not to remove the reader with the PC running. I think it works fine as long as it's not unplugged while the card reader service is running.

The thing about safe mode is not obvious, and I understand your questioning it, but on my primary PC, the installation was never completed without that step, and there were no error messages. Now, I'm a software developer, so my primary PC is chock full of all sorts of software goodies which may be interfering with the driver installation. I keep a test machine for testing software installations running XP SP3, and it installed the drivers without a hitch. Others have reported problems on specific PCs, and none on others. So dig in for a long day. Maybe you're in one of those places experiencing a lot of snow today and have nothing better to do.

secret agent girl,

I don't use the card reader, so I'm afraid I'm no help at all. I hope you're able to get everything working properly because I know just how eager you are to see your results in the software.

It seems like forum traffic has slowed lately, due to the holidays I suppose. If you don't get answers on this thread, you may want to start another one later with the name of your specific card reader, since I know a lot of people have used that one and probably had to tweak things.

Also, do a search for "ACR38" on the forum, if you haven't already. Lots of info there about the software and different versions of the card reader.

ADDED LATER: You may want to take a look at this thread: viewtopic/t47816/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=46 ... 38#p419886. vkmaynard says:

The card reader is an ACR38U (http://www.smartcardsupply.com/Content/ ... /ACR38.htm). Call them and make sure they send the U. The drivers (only ones recognized by ResScan) are different than the CCID. IMPORTANT!

IMPORTANT!! Disable any wireless LAN adaptors otherwise ResScan WILL NOT SEE THE READER!!!!!

Before I focus on that, take a look an the Reader tab of the ACR38 Smart Card Reader Properties window and confirm the following settings:

Card Type: MCU (T=0/T=1)
Card Voltage: Auto Detect

The SFDT checkbox should be checked.

Be patient. This thing is just trying to drive you crazy and you have to outsmart it, or throw it against the wall. We'll try that later.

Ah. Secret agent girl has encountered the next obstacle along this Journey. It's known as "The Tyranny of Inanimate Objects". Steve is correct. You need to sneak up on the solution. Sometimes you need to repeat and repeat the process. And then finally those inanimate objects get bored and let their guard down ... and VOILA! It works! No ryhme or reason.

Good luck. Hopefully you will get it working soon.

I don't see a Reader tab anywhere...
While we're waiting for the paint to dry, from the Device Manager, select :
Smart card readers / ACR38 Smart Card Reader
Right click and select Properties

The Reader tab is the second one across the top of the window.

John, you're givin' away my secrets!

Oh, no! O forgot the most sacred rule of the Secret User Code of the Electronic Rebels (SUCKER): Don't give away the secrets! That goes right next to the "Don't tell people that you actually read the manual!" rule.

Please don't report me! I will do my pennance by installing and reinstalling Windows for a couple days. (Sigh! And I *hate* that one!) Just don't report me!

Wake up, guy! We're dealin' with one who won't even post her equipment 'cause it would violate her secret agent principals. Our secrets are not safe here.

Secret Agent Girl, I think you've discovered the problem, and the solution is to throw the computer at the target!

Seriously though, you need to remove the hardware and the driver. I have to join my wife in some things more sociable than whatever it is we're doing, but I'll get back to this tonight or in the morning. In the mean while, the ACS and the Resmed driver installation packages include removal tools. See if you can find and run them. Search for all copies of the driver files you wrote earlier and delete them. Then we'll have a clean slate to work with. It looks like wonderful Windows searched and installed the wrong drivers.

Fear not. This is doable, and who knows, a little delay may just help to trick those dastardly demons.
