Please help me...I am drowning.

Post by JaBee » Mon Dec 21, 2009 8:47 pm

I am having a problem wiht water in my mask.

Most nights, I wake up after a couple of hours and hear a gurgling in the hose
and then, I start taking the mask off, and it is like a dam breaking. Suddenly'
a liquid comes pouring into my mask.

Most night I pout about two tablespoons of liquid out of my mask, and then
I get a kleenex to wipe the water off the mask.

But, I can not do anything about the liquid in the hose.

Most nights, I just roll over and sleep without the mask, and the one good thing
if my wife says that I do not snore as bad as i used to.

Another problem I have, is my mask is pressinginto my eye sockets next to my nose.
I continue to try and adjust it, but still can not get it right.

I am in Alabama and our house is pretty dry since we run the heater a lot at night.

Any suggestions???

JB

You don't say if you have a humidifier hooked up to your machine or inline. Usually the humidity being turned up too high or the temperature in the room being low will cause this. Try some hose management. You want to hang the hose up kind of in the center or as close to your mask as possible without it pulling on the mask. You want it to hold the hose up so any moisture that does condense in the hose will run back into the humidifier and not into your mask.

But if you have a humidifier try to turn down the humidity setting.

You can also cover the hose which will help reduce both the hose filling up with water and hopefully help reduce the moisture in your mask. If either of those work you will find commercially availble products on cpap.com that will work if you want to buy one and not make your own. As far as covering the hose your kind of putting a blanket on it so to say in order to keep the cold air from getting at it and condensing the moisture. You can try with an old long sleeve shirt. Cut the sleeves off and put them on the hose and pin them up with safety pins but not pinning the hose and also use tape to hold it in place.

Usually one or both of those will reduce or eliminate your problem.

OK.. that's rainout. Been there, done that.

You might have to lower the humidity, or depending upon your climate, you might have to cover the hose. There are several threads about rainout.

I actually already was hanging my hose up on the bedstead, so it is about a foot highere
than my head, and the high point is about halfway so the hose runs down to my face.

Last night, i cut the humidifer on the machine from from its highest setting down to half...
The temps was down to 27 last night (I am in Alabama so that is very cold
for us) so the heater rant the entire night, so the air was very dry.

I will put a blanket over the hose tonight and see if it helps.

thanks for the info..

Two quesitons for you:

1) what humidifier setting are you using? I don't have the same machine but I do have the resmed S8 autoset 2 and I found I got mild rainout at a setting of 3 which I think is half way. I now use a setting of 2 and with a 62 degree room with a hose cover, I do not get rainout.

2) What is the room temperature where you sleep? One way of reducing rainout is to increase the room temperature.

The best suggestion is to lower your humidifier until you find a setting that does not result in rainout. You will still be getting plenty of humidiy. You do not need rain forrest humidity levels to sleep.

My machine goes up to 5, so last night I dropped it to 3, but still
had the problem.

Tonight...I got some pillow cases and doubled them up and wrappede them
around the hoses....

I also set the humidifer down to 2...

My bedroom stays very warm and is closet to 68-70 at night.

I will see what happens tonight. It is not supposed be get as cold tonight
(mid 30's) so the heater should not run as much.

It may be that the hose needs to be up closer to you and your machine a little lower.

You can also try this. Put the hose under the blankets with you if its cold in your room. I haven't done that but other people on here do that on a regular basis. I would end up with the hose wrapped around me if I tried that.

Are you near a windown or a cold wall that would be much colder than the rest of the room?

and if all of the above does not work. purchasing the Aussie hose will. See sleepzone.com for a wonderful, heated hose that solved all of these kinds of problems at my house.

Hey Jabee,

I had the same problem, and I'm only on night 7 of therapy. Gurguling hose wakes you up or roll over and water hits your face. I hadn't had time to get a hose cover yet so I rigged one up.

I took a fleece pull over jacket, and ran the hose through both arms and wrapped the excess body part of the jacket around the hose. I didn't even bother to pin, tie or band the sleeves in place. and it's working great! I'll still get a cover, but for a quick fix it was very easy to implement. Best of luck!

Sometimes, depending on the weather, I turn my humidifier all the way off. I often start off on the lowest setting, then turn it off at some point in the middle of the night when I get rainout. So I would start with that first. If that does not help, try a cover for your hose.

I love to have the humidifier turned up - eliminates that dry feeling in the morning.

Aussie heated hose is indeed the answer!

With a room temperature of 68 to 70, your issue is too much humidity being added to the air. I think you will find a setting of 2 will solve your problem without having to resort to a heated hose and other heroics. Most people do not need to breath saturated air for good therapy.

Well...lets try again...

Post by JaBee » Tue Dec 22, 2009 3:58 pm

last night...I turned the Humidfier to 2
covered the hose with a double thick pillow cover with
velcro holding it on...
temp was around 68 in the house....

And three hours later my face was wet again, and when
I started taking the mask off, IT POURED.

I am going to turn the thermostat down, and keep the bedroom door
open to keep the bedroom cooler tonight..

I am nowhere near a window...
I will be checking on the heated hose....
(when Rested Gal recommends...I know I HAVE to check it out)

After six weeks, I would love to finally get my fourth full nights sleep with CPAP..
but ill fitting masks with leaks...
a mask that sticks me in the eye...
rain outs....
waking up at 2:00am and not being able to breathe...
an upper respiratory problem that filled my mask with snot instead of air...

and fighting with a DME...
a Dr. who never even gave me the results of my tests...

maybe the snoring was not so bad after all...

Oh well.....the good news is now work for two weeks!!!

JB

Running a colder bedroom will make the problem worse. Are you overfilling the tank? Why not try the humidifier in passover mode. Water in the tank but the heater off. If this works for you then try a setting of 1.
