Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
Ok, I read through everything I could on here and got a little assistance from Deerhound. I upgraded my desktop from Vitsa Ultimate to Windows7 Ultimate. Then I had to download and install Windows XP virtual mode and Windows virtual PC, in that order. Then rebooted the computer and clicked start ,all programs, windows virtual pc, then Windows XP mode. A setup box opened up to set up Windows XP virtual. Once that was all set up I rebooted the computer completely as this is a Windows update that was installed. Next I opened the Windows virtual xp as previously but this time a window came up that looked just like a wondows xp screen. I enlarged it and put my thumb drive with the software install files on it into the USB drive and clicked up above for xp virtual to attached it. Once I did that I was able to click run, computer then the thumb drive and the install file and let it run. Once it was installed I shut down xp virtual and restarted it and attached my card reader and all looked fine. I put the card in and began reading data from the card and got an error that the reader was not accessible. I downloaded new drivers for the MAKO card reader for windows xp. They were in a zip file so I unzipped them into a new empty desktop folder, copied the contents of that folder, opened xp virtual up again and pasted that folder with the drivers onto the xp desktop. I could then open that folder click on the install file and let it run. Then I shut down xp virtual again, started it back up inserted the card reader into the USB hub and the card into that and the data was downloaded.
Sorry, I know this was rather long winded, I just hope it makes sence. I am over an hour past normal bedtime tonight, but I wanted to get this out to those who were trying to set this up.
Again this is to run Encore Pro version 1.8 on a Windows 7 Ultimate machine via Windows XP virtual machine.
Good luck
Gerry

Maybe I will once my head is cleared up and my eyes aren't crossed and I either find out my last post to the WIKI was correct or I figure out how to do it. I will write it so it's easier to understand.

That's kind of how I'm doing it except I'm using VMware Workstation v 6.5, to run my XP Pro, on older machines the Bio won't support the MS way. On mine I can run Win 7 with it working, and XP pro at the same time. I use two 24 inch monitors. Jim

Jim will that work on my laptop with Win7 home premium? I just got it but plan to upgrade it to ultimate for backup reason. Home premium will not allow you to do an automated file or system backup to network storage. I am setting up all my computers to do this since someone deleted about a years worth of data in a couple seconds by downloading one so called font.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
With Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate Versions you can use free XP Mode which is a full version of XP with SP3. Before you install either of those: go into your BIOS and enable(turn-on) virtualization for your processor. You will need to make sure you have XP Mode started before you install of programs for it.Gerryk wrote:Jim will that work on my laptop with Win7 home premium? I got it currently working with my Notebook and Encore Viewer 1.0 with Windows 7 Professional 64bit and will try to install Encore Pro 1.8 using Windows 7.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
DJ thanks, I do have it installed on my desktop and have everything running smoothly. However I was asking about the VM workstation that Jim is running. I do not have Ultimate or pro on my laptop at this time just home ultimate. I also do not know how to get into the bios set up on my laptop yet. The documentation with it kind of looks like a second grade reading book if that their are so many pictures. I haven't done much as far as tweeking laptops in ages.
I am sure as it is brand new that the processor is capable of working in VM I just need to figure out how to get into the bios to make sure it is turned on.
But I had asked out the software that Jim is running to try that until after the holidays. I would rather not spend the money to upgrade a day old laptop right now.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
I did fresh installs of Win 7 ULT, on my older Moneypit 1, a core 2 3.0, and Asus MB, and my new Qosmio laptop core 2. I couldn't get the MS XP solution to work reliably on either machine, and the laptop had Bio Support for it.Gerryk wrote:DJ thanks, I do have it installed on my desktop and have everything running smoothly. So I redid them using a clean install of Win 7 ULT, then installed VMworkstation v6.5, then installed XP Pro w/sp3, set up all anti virus. Then installed Encore Pro 1.8i, after getting the card reader installed everything is running fine, I can run Win 7 and XP programs at the same time, I have dual 24 inch ASUS screens, using both gives me lots of space. The only concern is when I run VMware, it reassigns my USB drive resources, not a problem it finds the card reader well, but I can't get the network to share with the VM Machine. Still not a problem what I want transfered back to the Win 7 desktop, I put on the USB drive then return control of the drive to Win 7. I'm sure there's a way, but it's too easy just to return the drive to Win 7.
I usually any running 6 programs at a time, speed doesn't seem to be much of a factor for my Core 2 3.0GB processor. Like I said I couldn't get the MS Xp to work reliably, the card reader drivers would get lost after one use. Jim
For the laptop, I got a new HD, and used it so I wouldn't lose the worthless Vista install they forced me to buy, I stuck it in a drawer, and installed a second hard drive with Win 7 installed on it too, so I can boot up either version of Win 7 if one drive fails, i'm careful to a fault.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
One of the reasons I upgraded my Vista64 Ultimate partition to Win7 was in the hopes that I would be able to use "XP Mode" to finally get rid of my Vista32 partition. The only remaining reason for my keeping Vista32 around was for downloading the data from the Encore Pro smart cards.
While the 'in-place' Vista-to-Win7 upgrade went surprisingly well, I was surprised that XP Mode was a separate download (how tough would it have been to include it as an optional component on the install disc?), but oh well.
After the lengthy download, and multiple installs, I was finally able to get EncorePro 1.8 running.
Unfortunately, I've been stumped while trying to get EncorePro to recognize the Mako SmartCard reader. Everything I've tried still results in the "SmartCard reader not detected" message.
The problem might be related to the fact that after I install the driver, from the file DT3500-ISW-2_rev_G102.zip (is this the driver everyone else is using?), and verify that the card reader has shown up correctly in the Device Manager window, if I then restart XP, the card reader will no longer be listed in Device Manager. Running EncorePro before and after installing the driver, both before and after doing the restart produces the same "not detected" message.
Right now I'm running Windows Update within XP thinking that perhaps one of the updates will prove to be a solution... but I'm not very hopeful.
Any suggestions for what I might have overlooked?
--update: It seems the driver for the card reader does remain installed after XP restarts, but I have to use the "USB" drop-down on the virtual PC window to attach the correct "Unidentified Device" to get the Mako SmartCard reader to appear in the device manager. This just means I don't have to re-install the driver every time. I'm still getting the "SmartCard reader not detected" message from EncorePro.

To get the Card reader to be read in both XP Mode and Windows 7: go to where you change the settings for the card reader from Manual to Automatic and it will read it. I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional and installed XP Mode with Encore Viewer first as a test and then Encore Pro 1.8 and I was able to get both working and giving me my info.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
This may mean nothing since I am not very computer literate!
I just upgraded my computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. For a day after the upgrade(while I was trying things) all of a sudden Windows Viewer began to work as before. I had changed AntiVirus software in that day since the one I had was not working properly and, even with chat tech support, I couldn't get it to run properly. Changing antivirus program MAY have been what allowed Encore Viewer to work.
I know this thread is about Encore Pro but thought, since the data is the same, it might mean something.
As for the card reader, I had it unplugged during the upgrade. When I plugged it into the USB port, Windows 7 said that there was a new hardware device and it was looking for drivers. Then, very quickly, I get the message that the Mako card reader was ready to use.
I am getting my reports just as before.
As I said, I'm really not that good at computers but thought my experience MIGHT help in this thread.

Hawthorne: I am wondering about the Anti-Virus Program also. I use Norton Security 2010. I have nothing for XP Mode though (it says the standard: you may be at risk in the toolbar).
I am running a thought here: Which one of us that couldn't install: which Anti-virus Program was running, if SQL was fully un-installed before installation ... I should get a poll up and running hopefuly tonight or tomorrow.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
Actually I went with a free 90 trial of Norton 360 Ver. 3 and it is working great after a little learning curve.
I had CA security suite, as I had before the upgrade. I had to buy and download CA Security Sutie 2010 because the one I had was not compatible with Windows 7. I had an automatic renewal with CA. Apparently they couldn't upgrade me to 2010 without cancelling the automatic renewal. They refunded that to my credit card and I paid for and downoladed the 2010. It did not work well at all so I thought I would try the Norton 360- 90 day free trial. After a couple of days, I think I am going to buy it when the free trial is over.
I did have a lot of trouble completely uninstalling the CA before I upgraded to Windows 7. Then I had trouble with CA 2010, uninstalling it completely, when I discovered the difficulties I was having with it. I went to chat tech support at CA and they remotely took it all off both times.

Re: Encore Pro Version 1.8 Running on Windows7 Ultimate
Using Windows Update to bring the XP Mode OS up to date had the expected result... nothing
As for SQL, it's my understanding that MSDE, the stripped down version of the server, is installed during the EncorePro 1.8 installation process. In any event, the SQL Server service is running normally under XP mode for me.
Thanks for the help... any other ideas for me to try/check?
Changing the Startup Type of the "Smart Card" service in XP's Service Manager, restarting the service and restarting the OS, didn't change the error message (checked at several points in the process).DJ_Boxer wrote:To get the Card reader to be read in both XP Mode and Windows 7: go to where you change the settings for the card reader from Manual to Automatic and it will read it. I'm currently running AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition v9.0 in Win7, and no anti-virus in XP Mode.DJ_Boxer wrote:Hawthorne: I am wondering about the Anti-Virus Program also. I use Norton Security 2010. I have nothing for XP Mode though (it says the standard: you may be at risk in the toolbar).
