Starting the "Smart Card" service (and changing the startup type) in the Win7 Service Manager did the trick!!!

Thanks DJ!

Time to say "Hasta la Vista32!!!"

You're welcome and of course, no problem. I was glad to be of help.
I believe that all drivers are installed through the main OS: Windows 7 and then accessed through virtualization sharing through the virtual OS: XP Mode.
As a note: when I installed Encore Pro/Viewer I didn't have my Internet Security Suite installed as of yet, but with Norton 2010 they are working.

Another reason not to upgrade from XP.

Most people are running Vista / Windows 7 Home Premium rather than Ultimate; the price difference between Win 7 Home Premium and Ultimate is quite a bit of money for home users just to be able to run XP programs. Few home users have Active Directory servers that they will be wanting to join. I bought a 10" netbook running XP for about the cost of Windows7 Ultimate.

Sick and tired sorry I didn't see this sooner and I hope this helps. Before I start on it if someone is helping you out and hasn't answered just send them a private message on here. When you are in the threat you will see a little box under their name and when you hover your mouse over it, it will say send a private message. If someone sends one to me it will let me know I have one waiting when I log in and will also email me that it is there.

Ok let's see now I didn't install a different driver, I just installed the driver that was with the software. It sounds like you have tried so many things. I had trouble with my card reader after the initial install and reboot. I shut the computer off and rebooted it. Then I clicked on control alt delete which brought up a blue screen with several options. Just above cancel click on start task manager.
You want to look at the box that pops up and click on the third tab over from the left which is services. look to the upper right of the task manager window you are in and just to the left of the red X click is a box in the middle, click that to enlarge the task manager window. On the top bar under services it will say name pid and description. Click on description so things are listed alphabetically then scroll down until you find SMART CARD click on it to highlight it. Then click on the button on the bottom right of your screen that says services. Shortly another box will pop up that says services. Now as before maximise this screen too so it's easier. Click on name so things are alphabetized in here then scroll down until you see smart card, and their should be two of them. If you look to the next column after name which should be the description you want the card reader that says manages access to smart cards read by this computer. If you look over to the next column you will see the status which is probably manual or stopped. Double click on the whole line and another box will small window will pop up that will say smart card properties (local computer). We are almost done so hang in there. Down towards the middle of that window or box you will see where it says startup type. Next to that is a drop down menu and you want to click on automatic. Then click apply and ok and the box will close. Now go ahead and close the services are using and the task manager. Go ahead and shut your computer down and make sure the card reader is plugged into the usb port and reboot the computer. Then go ahead and start Encore pro and everything should be working. If things aren't working properly, it may be that you are using a newer driver than the xp software can recognize.

Let me know what happens.

Best of luck

Gerry

After watching this thread and prodding around with the system, I was able to get Encore Pro 1.8 running with the mako infineer card on Win7. Thanks for all the great advice and suggestions! I have Windows 7 Pro, which is considerably less expensive than Windows Ultimate, but still a bit more expensive than Win7 Home Premium. I have to admit - if you can afford it, at least go with Win7 Pro.

Windows 7 Pro has 'compatibility mode' so you don't have to set up a virtual machine to run the software. Encore Pro 1.8 does not need compatibility mode to run, but apparently the Infineer Mako Card does. Here's how I got it to finally work with the smart card reader:
  • Put the Respironics Smart Card Reader CD in the CD reader.
  • Navigate to 'Setup.exe'
  • Right click on 'properties'
  • Click on the 'compatibility' tab.
  • Check 'Run this program in compatibilty mode for' and select 'Windows Service Pack 3'.
  • Check 'Run this program as administrator'.
  • Click 'OK'.
  • Double-click 'Setup.exe'.
  • Allow it to run when it asks 'Do you want run this program by an unknown publisher?' by clicking 'Yes'.
The install should complete correctly if you have already installed Encore Pro.

I rebooted and inserted the card reader into the usb slot. The machine recognized the reader. I turned on encore pro and was able to read my card just fine. I did not have to automate the smart card in 'services'. It was already automated. Go figure. Also, Encore Pro will not run with Aero themes running. No worries: It automatically flips out of Aero themes into the basic simple theme, but reverts back to your preference when you exit Encore Pro later.

I was also able to install the MyCPAP card utility and make it work correctly as well. It threw me at first, because I forgot that the reader must be connected for the software to show up. (The interface just vanishes before it can finish rendering if the reader isn't plugged in.)

So Encore Pro seems to work just fine in Windows7 Pro too!

For those with Windows Home Premium or Vista, you can still use VMWare Player and your old WinXP Pro disk to create a virtual machine. Before I figured out how to get it to work on Win7 Pro, I was able to create a VMWare 'appliance' with no problems, although it is tedious. I had to use VMWare Player 2.5 because the newest version won't seem to work on my machine. The interface is a bit slower as a virtual machine but not agonizingly so.
  • Download the player here.
  • The finer points of creating an appliance from a premade image are here. You'll need your original WinXP install disk and the 25-character install key.
  • Make sure to enable automated usb compatibility by viewing the last comments here.
I've got 2GB RAM and created it on a blank 20GB virtual hard drive, and the VM appliance I created seems to work flawlessly.

However there a couple items in my Win7 install that still nag at me:
A - SQL Systray Switch is Missing
The systray MSSQL service control doesn't seem to either install or show up in Windows 7. I liked to be able to turn off the SQL service when I wasn't using it so I didn't have to waste machine cycles running a useless service when I need to be able to run other high-cycle software. Does anyone know how to turn that on or install it in the systray in Windows 7?

B. XML Export Data was Truncated
I exported what I thought was my whole two-plus years of data from the old winxp install and imported it into my new install, but it's missing everything since January 3 - almost an entire year of data did not export into my encore pro xml export file. I have an image of my old Windows XP install that I could go back to and re-export, but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. I could also re-image the card using the MyCPAP Card Utility multiple times, but again, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. Did anyone else notice truncation when importing their old data? It's very frustrating.

Note: I tried making a VMWare appliance out of an acronis image using VMWare's 'Converter Standalone Client'. It would begin to boot up but goes into a Blue Screen of Death in the VM and then repeatedly gives me the screen that asks whether I want to boot into safe mode. The appliance seemed entirely unusable. It might have been nice to be able to boot into my 'virtual' old machine in VMWare player and then export the data again. Any ideas?

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional and installed XP Mode with Encore Viewer first as a test and then Encore Pro 1.8 and I was able to get both working and giving me my info.

I just got my new Sony Vaio and went to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Devices and Printers
right clicked on Mako DT3500 SmartCard Reader, selected Properties, and from there cannot see how to change to automatic.

You have to change that under services:
Control Panel --> System --> Administrative Tools --> Services
Scroll Down in the new dialog box to 'Smart Card'
Make sure the service 'Status' column is 'Started' and that the column 'Startup Type' is set to 'Automatic'
Do not mess with 'Smart Card Removal Policy'. Leave that alone.

Ironically, my 'Smart Card' service was already set to 'Automatic' in all cases, so this change did not apply to me.

Good luck.

Thank you so much - I wish it would have worked. Great instructions by the way - and the settings were clear to see and I changed them. It still has the same error. I wonder if I uninstall EP now that the settings are changed, when I reinstall it the card will work.??

If you have been able to successfully open and view your patient home page on EP, you probably don't have to reinstall that.
It's more likely the SmartCard driver. This is what I would try:
  • Quit out of Encore Pro, but keep the usb card reader plugged in.
  • Control Panel --> System and Security --> System --> Device Manager
  • In the Device Manager window, scroll down to and select 'Smart card readers'.
  • Right-click on 'Mako DT3500 Smart Card Reader' and pull down to 'uninstall'.
If this is a yellow triangle with some other data reader name there, attempt to uninstall it.
  • Unplug the Smart Card Reader and don't put it back in until I say.
  • Download the Smart Card Reader/Writer software here.
(The Respironics V1.3 installer used to be available online from Two Factor, but they seem to have folded.
My Smart Card reader came with V2.0 software.)
If you already have the Installer CD with the label "REF#1015968 Version2.0" you could use that instead.
  • Otherwise, uncompress the zip file.
  • Right-click the resulting exe file and pull down to 'properties'.
  • Right click on 'properties'
  • Click on the 'compatibility' tab.
  • Check 'Run this program in compatibilty mode for' and select 'Windows Service Pack 3'.
  • Check 'Run this program as administrator'.
  • Click 'OK'.
  • Double-click 'Respironics_USB_SmartCard_Reader-Writer-Installer_V2.0.exe' to start the install.
  • Allow it to run when it asks 'Do you want run this program by an unknown publisher?' by clicking 'Yes'.
  • After it has successfully installed, reboot your computer.
  • After the computer has completely finished booting, now plug in the USB Smart Card Reader.
  • Allow the computer to automatically install the smart card drivers you installed.
  • When it says your hardware is ready to use, start up Encore Pro.
  • Try uploading your data as usual. (Remember to set the EP preferences first to ask you if you want to keep your data on the card.)
  • If it doesn't work at this point, try rebooting and uploading your data to EP again.
Hopefully, these directions will be close enough on your system to make it work for you. It should now work properly.
Good luck!

Yeah!! It worked. I was a bit concerned it wasn't going to when I got two different installshield errors. The first error said GetServiceScardSCR State Failed to which I clicked "OK". The next error right after that was StartServiceSCard SVR Failed, to which I clicked "OK". I let InstallShield reboot, waited for the complete reboot process, plugged in the card whereupon it got the drivers, started EP, did not double click on my data, instead plugged in the card reader, put my card in, and then clicked on download data. (Usually I click on my patient data first, then the card reader.) I think this is why it didn't give me the option to keep the data on the card - drat. No problem though. I decided to just let it do it's thing since it was reading the card! I got the report - voila!

I couldn't remember the preference I asked EP to use when downloading the card, of course until after I selected a different one : ) I selected save to and told it where to put it. Before I asked it to View Report. Then I saved the file with a date nomenclature. Hopefully the next time I put the card in, tomorrow morning, it will ask me again and not automatically save.

Thanks so much for our help!! Great directions!!!

PS During the install it asked that I check either DT3500 or one other option, which I think was PCMCIA something...'
Just for your info DreamDiver : )
