Doctor about to perform colonoscopy: "OK, now relax and take a deep breath. This is going to feel like I'm shoving a pineapple up your butt..."

(Hey, I warned you...)

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

Don't worry about it! I just had one a month ago and just like you, I was really worried about it. I didn't feel a thing (except the cost of it). lol.

WEll I have had one screening colonoscopy last December. My first. I wasn't quite out when they started the procedure and it was quite uncomfortable until the sleepyness kicked in. Don't know if it was just me but as uncomfortable as it was I would much rather be asleep..

PS My husband and I both did this and we literally froze while taking the gallon of liquid stuff. Had two layers of clothes on and a little electric heater blowing on us to keep warm. Not sure why that happened.

I had my one and only colonoscopy in July of 2006. Guess I was given Versed. I did not know or care what they did to me. Prep was bad but the procedure was a piece of cake. In the recovery room, the gastroenterologist came by when I was awake enough to understand and told me that she was 99% sure I had sleep apnea and needed to go get a sleep study. Thus, this procedure resulted in two good outcomes for me -- colon was in good shape and no repeat colonscopy needed for 10 years and I learned I had a treatable condition. The rest is history. Thanks to that good doctor I've been on CPAP for just over three years. I will not hesitate to get my repeat colonoscopy when 2016 rolls around. Since I obviously had apneas while sedated, I'll take my CPAP with me.

Had a sigmoidoscopy many years ago so cannot even recall how it was but have had two colonoscopies. First one two years ago and the latest two months ago.
These were done at a surgery center and I can honestly say they were nothing to be concerned about. You will feel nothing. The only discomfort is preparing for it . You have to drink the weird stuff and you will feel hungry. Beyond that, don't worry. It's easy.

Over fifty, never had a colonoscopy, and never will unless there is evidence to support one. Not studies. Images. Showing problems. Images from inside me.

I have virtual colonoscopies via MRI. Costs less, works just as well. IF they see something, THEN the tube gets shoved up my butt.

I'm awake the entire time. There is never any pain at all. I leave with a CD of all the images they took.

Why in the world anyone subjects themselves to the pain and risks of colonoscopy and anesthesia with nothing but a self-interested doc's say-so is beyond me.
It's a strange world.

Hey Slinky, I will be doing the Crohn's and Colitis 1/2 marathon in Las Vegas on Dec. 6th. I will keep you in my thoughts while participating in the marathon. My sister has Crohns and she, along wit her daughter and my daughter will be in the 1/2 marathon also.

The word colonoscopy sends chills up my spine>

FYI--I was just informed yesterday by the Gastro folks that Fleet is no longer on the market. So the only option is the gallon of either Colyte or NuLytley. UGH!
DeVilbiss IntelliPap Std Plus with Smartflex; Transcend miniCPAP & Everest2 w/humidifier & batt for travel. UltraMirage FFM; PadACheeks; PaPillow. Using straight CPAP at 13.0/passover humidifier. AHI consistently < 1.5. Began CPAP 9/4/08.

Yeah, they decided that Fleet's Phosphosoda is too hard on the kidneys. I found it to be like drinking a bomb, anyway.

For my last colonoscopy I did the Mirilax prep. It was still yucky to drink, but it was better than the various lytelys I've had in the past.

I'd much rather have a virtual colonoscopy, but my doc needs to do biopsies to check on the status of Crohn's.

Rosie, I think it's great you guys are doing the 1/2 marathon. Thanks for your support!

Bless you and thank you and your family, Rosie. I wish your sister a long remission!!!

Plr, they'll never convince me that the problem w/the PS wasn't the patients not drinking enough water and clear liquids whilst using it for a prep. I preferred it.

Now I prefer to use Magnesium Citrate. 1 - 10 oz bottle late morning, LOTS of water and clear liquids until evening, a 2nd 10 oz bottle that evening, LOTS of water and clear liquids and 'I'm good to go and squeaky clear and clean for the scope in the AM. While we still HAVE to drink LOTS of clear liquids we don't have to drink them so fast in such a short time, we can stretch them thru out the day, just making sure to stay well-hydrated. We can mix the Mag Cit w/the usual: gatorade, gingerale, whatever. I prefer to drink less "bilge water" tasting stuff and more decent or good tasting clear liquids.

The key is when you're running clear, no "sand", you don't need any more of the prep. But you do need to keep up w/the liquids until NPO time.

And actually, the more "progressive" colonoscopists and research say the closer to prepping the procedure is the clearer the colon, and if I remember correctly, the last prep just 2 hours before the procedure was effective and not a sedation problem.

Hey, twokatmew, do you post as the healingwell.com Crohn's forum??

Slinky, the Mag Citrate is new to me. The Gastro people told me I need to do the last prep 6 hours before the procedure. I guess I'd better do what they Rx'd for this event, but wish I'd known to ask about what you've described.

Do a google search on colonoscopy prep Check out the various preps and doses and methods of prepping. Some of these arses really believe in "overkill". Of course, they aren't the ones who have to get that "bilge water" down. Gently washing w/a hot wash cloth after every "trip" helps to spare the "bottom". Prep time is the perfect time for a bidet!!!

I guess I'm lucky in a way-- some time on Wednesday (and they didn't even really tell me when) i'm supposed to start by taking 2 delcolax pills then I mix a bottle of miralax with 64 oz gaterade and start drinking that when that's gone i wait at least 4 hrs and mix another miralax with another 64oz gatorade. i think i'll do the last gatorade early the morning of?? i guess i'll have to call and see what time i'm supposed to start the prep on wed. I did learn something interesting though--my cousin who's having the same thing done on Wed. and is taking me on thurs. also has OSA (I didn't know that) they knock her out every time--and she has absolutely no problem --she doesn't even have to take her machine with her. they just put her on 02 during the proceedure and while she's knocked out.
