Ah yes, the days of my first apartment... In Chicago a block away from the Museum of Science and Industry. Couple months shy of 18 and all I could afford. Lived in the apartment above my best friend. We used to joke that we paid the rent to the roaches. I literally would open the door, turn on the lights, and wait until the majority of roaches cleared the room. My best friend downstairs couldn't figure out why her phone wouldn't ring anymore. When the phone company came to fix it (yes, back in the day when they made house calls) they found roaches nested in the receiver!!! As for my apartment, the painter said I should get some of this stuff called TAT which had a long straw-like nozzle attached. I saw a roach crawling into a crack between the wall and the cabinet and sprayed up in there. Man - tons of them started dropping out of there. My head is crawling just thinking about it.

Oh sure, we could get exterminators, but the only good that would do is they'd move next door for a couple weeks and come back and attack en masse!! After my lease was up in a year I made sure everything that wasn't washable in amonia and/or bleach was tied up in large garbage bags and sprayed full of roach killer and sealed. I left the bags tied up for several weeks. I left all my upholstered furniture there. Didn't want to take a chance! But my big surprise came when I was packing up my parquet jewelry box from Japan. I slid open one of the doors and, you guessed it, the roaches had NESTED IN THERE!!!!! I ran back to my mom's crying and hysterical (she only lived 2 blocks away). I guess those guys not only like warm, dark, moist places, but they can also live off the glue binding wood together or book binding glue!!!

Now that I have been reminded of that lovely time in my life, I am definitely NOT going to go to bed without checking every INCH of hose, machine, humidifier, mask, etc.!!!!!!!

After I moved out of that apartment I kept seeing shadows out of the corner of my eyes for a year at least!!!

To dream ... the impossible dream...

Had the bug in the hose thing happen once when staying at a friends.. But it was just a beetle.
worst actual cpap moment was the 4 days i had to do without it once.

But roaches. HATE EM.. fresh out of home at 19 our first place. We didnt talk to any of the neighbors before signing the contract. And there were suprises.
One being the roaches. There was 30+ trailers in this park and many of these were half trailers. One converted into 2 -1 bedrooms.

But the first week there we had the room moving with turning on the light experience and started to take steps.. We talked to the maintenence guy who told us Yes there was a problem but the owners refused to listen to his advice, which was hire a company to do ALL the trailers at once. They were simply moving from place to place as each tennant attempted to kill them.

But our first bomb/spray/fog session took place, did all the prep, got the baby in the car step back pop the foggers and then out to dash off to the inlaws for the night. As I walked across the portch to go to the car I started hearing popping sounds. I Look in the window to the kitchen. And the countertop was COVERED.. and there was a 3 foot walkway between the counter in the window. And they were jumping off the counter and slamming themselfs into the window!! I'm standing there in amazement watching when suddenly the bottom of the window pops open and a gushing flood of them come spilling out.. (Cranking type of window with broken cranks). Me screaming like a 8 year old and dancing through them to rush to the car. lol We started taping/bolting the windows down after that.

Then was the time we had possums in the same house.. o.O I now often wonder why we spent 5 years there. lol

Roaches are NOTHING. The Sunshine State has Palmetto bugs. As was said before, they are WINGED cockroaches, that fly. Moreover, they are at least 4 inches long..uggh. At any rate, at that time, my son was about 12 (he's 27 now,and lives in Chicago). He and I decided to take a swim in a motel pool in Cocoa Beach, where we were staying on an Oceanside vacation. So, it is hot, and we want to jump into the water. We happen to notice that no one else is swimming in the pool, but who bothers finding out why. So, we take a flying jump into the deep end of the pool, only to notice that the area around the skimmers are absolutely loaded with HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of Palmetto bugs. Some are dead, and some are far from dead, and are swarming. Apparently, a whole bevy of them got caught in the fliter, and were blasted all over the pool. Nobody managed to tell us that the filter was shut off, for repair, and no one was using the pool until the filter was unjammed due to the thousands of Palmetto bugs...UGGH, it was nauseating. The symbol on Florida's license plate should be the Palmetto bug, not the Orange.

You know what's really sad?

I knew what the ending of this story was going to be when I first started reading it. I live in Texas, so my first thought was, "You know there's a roach in there, don't you?"

Auto, I'd compare our Texas bugs with your wimpy Florida ones any day!

Ours fly. I've chased them around the room with a shoe more times than I can count.

This is just about true to the actual size

Those are wimpy Texas Palmettos. Ours can't be killed with a shoe. Tried that many times, and they walk off, unscathed. You need a sledge hammer for ours.

That was my memory of the ones in Key West. The #^$%&*$ didn't even have the decency to run after I stomped on him. He just walked away. I swear I saw a middle...whatever kind of digits roaches have, extended as he left.

Ah. You misunderstand me. I didn't say I could KILL them with my shoe. Just that I was chasing them around the room with one! . Was just to show my own insanity in thinking I could do something with that shoe!

Remember, they are immune to radiation. Should there ever be a nuclear incident, I would definitely NOT want to tick them off, as they will inherit the earth.

Well, this is not about my worst CPAP moment, but it does involve squirrels, blue jays, and palmetto bugs. Not to mention CATS.

Back about 1984, we were (or more correctly, our brindle dachshund was) adopted by Cat Manda the Huntress. Cat Manda was was a small cat, about 7 pounds, with a Siamese build and a SIamese voice and a SIamese crook in her tail -- but she was our Halloween cat -- an orange and black tortie, with a orange tiger-stripe bib in front, and a bright orange blaze down her nose, and she had huge amber eyes.

Did I mention that Cat Manda was a Huntress?

We had many adventures, like the live squirrel she brought me, and the blue jay she turned lose in the house. But the real capper was the morning she brought in a palmetto bug and turned it loose under the covers of our bed. I caught it as it can up and out of the inside of my nightgown, and hurled it against the wall so hard I killed it, which out to tell you where my adrenaline level was at that point. I voice went "Man-DA!!!" rising to a screech at the end.

Prudent Manda had removed herself from the bedroom at that point, logically concluding that this gift had not been appreciated.

After I climbed down of the ceiling, I went in search my my Huntress.

I did mention that Manda was a Huntress, didn't I?

I appraoched her and said, "Manda, we need to have a talk."

She looked up at me with amber eyes and washed a paw. "Mrow?"

Me: You're a cat.

Manda: Nice of you to notice.

Me: You're a Huntress.

Manda: Yes, and your point is?

Me: I wouldn't ask you to change.

Manda: Better not try!

Me: However, I will make one thing clear. You, as a Huntress, are entitled to hunt whatever you wish.

Manda: Well, yes. And your point?

Me: My point is: if you bring it inside, it had bloody well better be DEAD when you do so. Clear?

Manda: I'll give it my consideration.

Me: More than your consideration, Madam Huntress.

Manda: (washes paw and strolls off to cuddle with her Ko-Dachshund, pretending she has not just been given an order.)

However, she never brought another live squirrel, blue jay, roach, sparrow or chameleon into the house so long as she lived -- and she was with us for 18 years.

I will state, however, that THAT has to be my worst experience TRYING to sleep.... and that was some years before I had the full symptoms which led to my apnea diagnosis.

I'm glad this thread got bumped, I missed it when I first joined back in December going through the many thousands of threads - a good example of why threads should not be locked perhaps.

One the other hand I'm not so sure I wanted to read this. Sure I knew all this was possible, but was not top on my list of events I would possible encounter. Perhaps it is things like this that negatively impact compliance.

Tonight I am sure there will be visions of bugs and creepy crawling things - so much for a good nights rest!

Well this thread is entertaining. I don't really have any bad cpap moments to relate, except I guess back when RG was on her pantyhose kick and I tried to steal a pair from my wife to experiment with. Got caught in the act and had to show my wife some of RG's posts before she'd believe me.
