Anybody interested???
Hi guys! You've sucked me in again. I was only going to sneak a look and now you've got me signed up for your group. (Wish I could type as fast as Lori and Amy!)
When I started CPAP some weeks ago I hoped the weight would start to drop but no such luck. BUT things have started now due to acting on some research.
1. Problem was that I wasn't getting 8 hours sleep.
USA testing has apparently proved that if you consistently get less than 7.7 hours of sleep:
a) Your Body Mass Index (BMI) will rise [that means higher fat ratio I think]
b) You produce more of a particular hormone that increases your appetite
c) Healthy young males put on weight simply by being deprived of sleep.
2. You should vary your eating patterns/ menus to stop your body lowering your metabolism to counteract weight loss (great though during a famine)
3. Apple cider vinegar in water (sweetened with natural honey if you prefer) sipped throughout the day.
4. Sweeten a glass of water with a couple of teaspoons of fructose and a squirt of lemon or lime in the hour before a meal has apparently been proved to lesson the desire for unnecessary calories.
5. Deep breathing (which is a problem for me) and lots of water (which is also a problem for me).
6. Spicy food to raise your metabolism.
Every Sunday I cook for up to twelve people and I tend to eat foods I wouldn't at other times. But, recently I have started fasting or only having healthy beverages on Monday and have found that it knocks back my appetite for the next few days and I feel great by Tuesday (and can think of nothing better than crunching on salads). Great for the spiritual side of life also.
I am confident that we can keep each other motivated.
Eternally grateful
Margaret

Margaret,
I already do 2-5, but I can't get 7.7 hours of sleep a night each night, as stated in 1, and spicy foods, in 6, cause a bit of heartburn for me. But glad to see I'm doing some things right . Thanks for the tips.
Good luck. Hope you're successful!!! And you can come cook for my clan any time you want.

A typical day for me:
Breakfast: eggs cooked in butter w/spinach and garlic or other veggie (sometimes an omelet, sometimes sunny side up)
or maybe once a week raw nuts (not peanuts or cashews) with fresh fruit
(about once or twice a month I'll have full fat cottage cheese and fruit w/slivered almonds)
Lunch: A generous serving of Cabbage, onion, carrot, garlic and dill stirfry with some kind of protein (roasted chicken or marinated pork loin chops browned in butter)
Dinner: A generous serving of sauteed in olive oil and butter broccolli stalks or green beans almondine and tilapia or salmon w/garlic lemon butter sauce.
If I'm hungry or want to keep my metabolism stoked, I'll have whatever I like as a snack of the following: hard boiled egg (or any kind of egg); meat, a can of tuna or some canned salmon or sardines (or other fish); left over meat (no nitrates and not overly salted); veggies (raw is good w/guacomole for dip) or raw nuts or fruit if the nuts and fruit aren't slowing my weight loss.
Some other favorites made without grains or dairy: stuffed cabbage; burgers w/grilled onion and tomato; beef stew w/onion, turnips, carrots and tomato;
lemon chicken w/bok choy stir fry; egg fu yung made w/lots of veggies including mushrooms, scallions, celery and bean sprouts; roast lamb on the rotisserie; avocado w/salsa or ratatouille put in the hollow; Italian wedding soup; spaghetti squash or yellow squash "ribbons" served w/garlic butter sauce or tender crisp mixed veggies or a fresh tomato/pepper sauce; crispy baked chicken wings or legs w/hot sauce.
Thats about it. I try to shop the sales and the discounted items in the store and still have the same basic plan of eating lower carb veggies (once in awhile I'll have a yam w/salty butter as a treat...maybe once ever week or two), "anything with a face" (my apology to the vegetarians reading this), eggs and good fats (olive oil and butter). I have cut back on fruit and raw nuts because I found myself overeating it so I use it more as a garnish with my main food choices. Lots of water too. And I feel really good. Simple plan....no measuring. Just eat until you are satisfied and don't eat to a point of feeling TOO full, but just right. I'm not very disciplined about taking my calciumD/magnesium supplement but am working on it. If you want to see a food journal I kept, check out "flowergirl" on "lowcarbchristians" site. Terry

Terry,
It's only 7 AM, but I'm starved after reading your menu. Sounds right up my alley, especially with all the garlic. I'd eat Rice Crispies with garlic (only kidding), I love it so much.
My thing is, I avoid all red meat now for cholesterol purposes. And I am not a vegetarian by any sense of the word. I love roast beef, burgers and steaks. I just don't have them anymore. I did treat myself to a prime rib the other night at a steakhouse when we went out to dinner. That was the first red meat in two months. I am working on lowering the cholesterol. Heart disease runs in my family. So it's exercise, no red meats or anything fried, EXCEPT ON OCCASION.
Keep up the great work. Sounds like you have a real handle on what you can and cannot eat and what is good for you. You should feel proud.

You and me both. Breakfast today was oat bran (I actually like the stuff ) with frozen blueberries stirred in after cooking. This quick cools the hot cereal so I don't burn my mouth.Guested Sleepless on LI wrote:It's only 7 AM, but I'm starved after reading your menu. I wish I'd taken the time to poach and egg to go with it, but I wanted to get to the office early to fix a problem in a machine that has to ship to a show.
You're probably thinking: "Hot cereal in the summer in Florida; what is he thinkiing of?" Well, I god a code in by nodes ad I'b all dubbed ub. Serious post-nasal drip has given me a sore throat and upper respiratory issues as well.
I learned last night that using a Swift when you have a drippy nose is a nasty, ugly thing! .

cholesterol etc...
Hi Lori....er, "guest" LOL, if you are appearing incognito today....LOL I love garlic too....Hmmm....so you make rice krispie squares w/garlic???? YUM YUM YUM....forgot to mention one of my favorite dishes when the sales and wallet allows: on those "yellow squash ribbons (faux noodles)" w/garlic butter, parsley and slivered veggies, add some shrimp. YUM.
I hit a "meat sale" today at the local grocers. Canned wild salmon for 88 cents a pound, ground chuck for $1.69, sirloin pork chops for $1.79 and a dozen eggs for 48 cents! Pretty good deals here in OH.
I used to think red meat was a problem for cholesterol too BUT if you decide to eliminate the starches, sugars, carbs and frankenfoods many people see their cholesterol level go down to a healthy level!!!! The combo of good fats, proteins (including eggs and fattier cuts of beef) and veggies does it. Your body needs carbs to make cholesterol. Of course stay away from transfats too which sometimes appear in supposedly "healthy" foods in the diet industry besides most bakegoods...partially hydrogenated anything and transfats are a total boogeyman to our health!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am my own science experiment re cholesterol and will see if its come down adequately after another few months neandrethining. It was quite high....270 or 290 I think....and the balance/ratio was not good last time I checked. That was after eating lots of starchy junk though so I'm optimistic.
EEK! Terry

Recipe!!! Recipe!!! Sounds too good to pass up."yellow squash ribbons (faux noodles)" w/garlic butter, parsley and slivered veggies, add some shrimp. YUM.
In our house, most meals are made by starting with garlic browned in olive oil. The aroma in the house is magnificent. Not too good after you eat it, but while it's cooking...nothing better.
I love salmon, tilapia, shrimp, lobster, crab, clams, you name it seafood, I love it. Although the thought of raw oysters never made it past the disgusting stage to me. Maybe they're good. Just never could bring myself to try one. Did try sushi once...wasn't bad, just not great. I think it's an acquired taste, at least it would be for me.
Just met a friend for lunch (got done with work early-yea-on a Friday) and had this incredible grilled chicken, red peppers, asparagas and egglant. Out of this world. So it's yogurt for dinner for me. I don't usually eat such a huge lunch.
Well, Terry/Guest (looks like you're following in my morning footsteps), have a great weekend. BTW, got guested because I used a great program last night that cleans up all the unnecessary files on your computer and it reset me. When I realized that, had to go back and repost letting everyone know the last posts were me.

Count me in. I now have about 95 lbs to lose having lost 12 in the past 6 weeks. I gave up on trying to do it alone and joined L.A. Weight Loss. I weigh in three times a week and receive counselling and write down everything I eat and am supposed to drink 8 glasses of water. I usually have six but will try for eight. I exercise three times a week at a gym and try a walk an hour a day, perhaps not all at once. I am 62 years old and have decided that I don't want to spend the remainder of my life fat. The diet I am on is not based on trying to eat less and starving your body into retaining the weight, but on feeding the body the correct amounts of the proper foods and vitamins so it will release the weight. This is a hard concept to understand. In most cases I am eating too little and maintaining the weight so this week I plan to follow it to the letter. We are encouraged to eat smaller amounts more frequently throughout the day. Happy to join the weight loss group. CareS

Cara,
Congratulations on your 12 lb. weight loss in six weeks. You're doing something right. And I give you a lot of credit for starting the exercise and walking. Best thing you can do for yourself. I am 48 and have started almost the identical regimen you're on, only I don't go to LA Weight Loss. I hear they are great, though. I am trying to feed my metabolism in small amounts during the day, as they told you is the way to go. I also bike ride three times a week. I don't walk yet, but am planning on incorporating that into my schedule. I have lost 14 pounds in eight weeks, so we are about losing at the same pace. I only need to lose about 9 more, and I hear the last 10 are the hardest. I'm not expecting it to fly off (have to be realistic).
I would trust what they're telling you and don't cut short on the food you're supposed to eat. It's like fuel for the campfire. Stoke it and feed it. You're doing both and you should be proud of your success so far. Keep up the great work. This was a fantastic idea Amy/Yawn had. Let's hear it for Amy!!!

Sleepless on Li, Thanks, I am really trying hard. I was thinking it might be interesting to hear some of the horror stories that we have experienced while being fat that have left a lasting scar. A few years back, maybe ten, I was sitting at the gas pump getting the tank filled up when an exuberant, newly hired, young male gas attendant congratulated me on the new baby about to arrive and asked when it was due and did I know if it was a boy or girl? Aparently his wife was expecting a baby whatever that had to do with it. I had really mixed feelings about this encounter. Happy that I looked young enough to be having a baby but insulted that someone would inquire about my pregnancy when I wasn't pregnant but obviously looked the part. Any other stories out there? Cara,
Shortly after having my daugher (my 3rd child), someone in the McDonald's parking lot, as I was leaving with her, thought I was having a baby so close to just having her. That was when I hadn't lost my baby weight yet, though. I have been rather fortunate not to be on that end of that equation since then.
I think in your situation, be glad he thought you looked young enough to still have a baby. That is a GOOD thing. You can always lose weight, but you can't always look that young. Like that joke when one person says to the other, "You're drunk." And the other replies, "Yes, and you're ugly, but I'll be sober in the morning."
