Used Remstar Plus gives better sleep than new M Series APAP

Post by Babette » Mon Apr 06, 2009 11:54 am

Well, I finally broke down and dragged out the used RemStar Plus "tank" that a friend found at the Goodwill for $20 and gave to me. I decided I'd haul it up to the BF's and leave it there, instead of hauling my M Series APAP up there every weekend.

After being mystified by the screen, Wulfman kindly clued me in to the archaic symbology, and I got it set up the way I want it. THANK YOU!!!!

I swear I'm sleeping better with it than my Auto. Go figure.

IT IS QUIETER THAN THE M SERIES!!! Ya'll were right....

I do dispute that it's easier to fill and dump the humidifer tank.

So, count me among the "tank lovers" here on the forum. Don't pass a tank by if you find it for $20 at Goodwill. Mine doesn't even smell bad!

LOL,
Babs

Let's see...

You sleep better at your boyfriend's than at home....and you credit the CPAP machine???

Could it be you're more "tired"...or "relaxed"? <wink, wink>

Well, if you knew my boyfriend, you wouldn't say that. I swear that boy's got prostate problems.... The only thing wrong with that man is the lack of sex, I tell you what...

AND I have to sleep on this thin little foam mattress on the dining room floor that kills my sciatica.

And I STILL sleep better. Yup, it's the cpap machine.

LOL,
B.

Is it set at a single pressure? Are you running your apap in auto mode or cpap mode?

Curious minds what to know...LOL

Yeah, the Plus is set at 11.8 single pressure, no flex.

I think the APAP is still set at 11-15, no flex. I'll have to check. I haven't had any problems lately, so I haven't been looking at it much.

I picked 11.8 as the single pressure for the Plus because I checked the Auto, and that was my 90% pressure. Seemed a reasonable choice at the time.

I did look at the rest of the LCD and my AHI is down under 1.0. Cool! I just can't remember the pressure settings.

LOL,
B.

single pressure is more restful for lots of folks, including me. Glad you got a deal on a second machine. Can't beat $20!

Hey, and it was FREE to me.

My buddy paid $20 thinking she'd sell it on Ebay, then ended up GIVING it to me, because I helped her husband out. He was off the hose for a year, after losing a bunch of weight, and thinking he needed to be back on. I set him up with my Auto for a week (he swapped me his Tank), printed out his reports for him, and turned him on to the NAII and they were both so thrilled they gave me the cpap. I figured it would be a great backup machine, and then decided it's a great "leave at the BF's house weekend machine."

Cheers,
B.

See I knew you could learn this stuff. Listen to you, "I set him up with my Auto for a week (he swapped me his Tank), printed out his reports for him, and turned him on to the NAII " Just like an old pro.

Babs,

One of the best machines I owned was a 'tank' auto. It is beautifully built (very quality internal design & construction). It was never noisy (was quieter than other brands of the day).

Whilst I have always been impressed with the M Series algorithms, can't say I like the blower assembly due to that noise issue, nor the humidifier set up.
But all manufacturers have their ups & downs & no doubt the next model they release will bring Respironics back to the quality we are used to from them.

I tell you what, I'm keeping my eyes open for another tank. Can't hurt to have another spare. Unless you're my BF, and you think I'm a nut job because I hoard so much stuff. Then it can hurt. He likes to wack me with a stick every time I buy something he feels is not absolutely essential to survival.

I keep telling him that 4th purse purchase in one month was ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL TO A GIRL'S SURVIVAL.

LOL,
B.

I agree--I really like my Backup old tank. it just kind of "feels right," its quiet and just runs. But, I actually prefer the humidifier on my M Series (Revision #3). It is easy to fill and clean no leaks no spills. I don't have to disconnect anything (like the hose) to remove or fill it. I can sleep all night on halv a tank at a setting of 2.

Ok it takes a couple of minutes of use for M series heated humidifiers to "warm up" but it's never caused me any issues. I actually think that Respironics may have done this to reduce the humidity "backflow" into the XPAP. In some of your unit teardowns photos of the old tanks it kind of look looks some were "suffering" from humid air back flowing into the blower. I think that this can only happen when the blower unit is turned off. You know the old 20 minute humidifier "Pre-Warmup." What are your thoughts DSM?

I always thought the M series when new, included a change designed to stop the problem of people putting their tanks into the carry bag when there was still water in the H/H. That water would go straight into the internal airline & into the blower & as shown in one set of photos, could quickly rust the bearings in the motor.

I believe that problem was a big cause of machine returns to Respironics when the 'tank' style was popular. Most people coming here got that message very quickly, I recall there being a few stories over the years of people desperate to dry out their 'tanks' after similar accidents.

It is good to hear that the newer Ms have the improved chamber.
