Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
Re: Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
I did not use a hack saw. In the plumbing section of a hardware store, you can get a pipe cutter for around $10.00. They are really easy to use and there is no issue with burs. It also takes a lot less time to cut the pipe.

That looks like something I want to try building...

Linus, what does the base of yours look like? And, about how heavy is the stand complete?
Re: Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
While Linus' stand is a thing of beauty, I would choose PVC for a couple of reasons.
Lighter for travel
Cheaper
Easier for a novice plumber
Won't bend (permanently)
I have a PVC cutter that sort of looks like scissors, but the handles ratchet for more leverage. Cuts clean and square. Probably available at Lowes or HD, but may cost more than all the rest of the materials put together!

Copper questions. If you can find a hardware store, go for Type M copper tubing. It is the least expensive. I would not bother with online orders. The copper tube (12 mm diameter X 2.5 m length) was about $5.82 at a hardware store. Online options would result in lots of shipping charges.
The stand looks just like the PVC one. I chose the copper for my home because I like the look. I agree, PVC is easier for travel and it most likely would not raise questions at the airport.

Re: Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
Problem here, is that they put all the hardware stores out where you can only get to them by car. There used to be one that I could walk to, but they moved it....and a tornado came along last summer and made it go away. But, they didn't see it as maybe they should've built somewhere else.
It was a lot easier when I lived in Canada....there was a Home Hardware just a few blocks from home (maybe a little more than a few)....co-worker commented seeing me walking from there carrying a big extension ladder once. I wish they had stores like that here in the states. But, I being in the minority of non-driver kind of limits things.
Though I did say that one of the big reasons for moving to the states was that it would be easier to buy stuff. And, it is for stuff that I can order from anywhere and have shipped to me.....

Linus,
That is beautiful!!!!! So much nicer than what I have rigged up. If I had one like that, I would not even try to hide it. WOW! Who knew hose hangars could be classy?

Re: Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
We bought a beautiful new wooden bed and I suggested that I was going to drill a hole in the tall headboard and put a big screw hook in it. I think it was the next night that I woke up with the hose wrapped around my neck. My wife still claims it was because I was rolling over and she had nothing to do with it!

Re: Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
You better rethink that hook then or you may find more than your hose hanging on it

Hose hanger 2.0 will be plated with Zinc. I used a saline bath for the parts, and electroplated them using a 9 volt dc power source and a zinc plate (upper right) as the donor metal.
Here is the process. The plating of zinc should prevent the copper from turning green over time.

HI EVERYONE,
I'm new to this board and as of October of 08, a new CPAP user. I have done well with adapting to my machine, and have improved my sleep quality, thus improving the quality of my life.
But one of the obsticles I've been dealing with is hose management. I found this site the other day and the instructions for makine this hose stand. I have to say the results are great!
Thanks for the information. I look forward to future post!

Re: Homemade Hose Stand by Craig
I do not have much to show after plating other than a slight sheen on the copper. I could have used a car battery and left it over night to plate, but all I want is a slight coating that can be used as an electron donor to the copper.
I used a sheet of zinc from the hardware store. The zinc sheet can be used on your roof. As water passes by it, some zinc travels off onto the roof. Zinc prevents algae and moss from taking root on my roof. That was its initial use.

I just built a Copper stand out of scrap tubing, T's, caps and 90° elbows (3/4" stock). Total investment - $1.20. (Glad I didn't through it out!)
