Your profile says you have S8 Elite CPAP Machine which is not an Auto

CPAP.com sells it for $439.95 or $499.95 with a humidifier

Seem to quite price differential from the $1700.00 you paid in Toronto

But...I didn't pay $1700. I paid $500 out of pocket. The OHIP ADP paid the remaining $1200.

(I need to check my profile)

Hey Gordo - why don't you call the manufacturers and ask whether their US customers are permitted to ship overseas..also ask whether the US-based warranty applies. Ithink you'll be surprised at what they'll tell ya...

spitintheocean,

The information given to you by the Ottawa Hospital is out of date because Vital Aire bought Access Therapy and Medigas last summer (2008) so they no longer exist. By the way, Access Therapy & Medigas were the same company; no idea why different names but you'd go to the Jamie street office and listen to Leah answer phones for both companies and refer the calls to the same people. No idea about the other companies you mentioned, though.

Whatever way you cut it . The cost was still $1700.00
I recognize that ADP paid $1200.00. Unfortunately you can only get this if you buy from
an Ontario based provider, who in my opinion charge excessively high prices
Just check the Ontario prices for masks and other accessories compared to CPAP.com
and you might become a CPAP.com customer
BTW
It is nice have our "guest" once again offering an opinion
Must be another Ontario based vendor

Huh. I think I am arguing around in a circle with you Gordo, but what I'm left with is: what I care about is my out-of-pocket cost.

What do I care, except intellectually, if the "real" cost charged by Ontario suppliers is higher than the cost charged by CPAP.com? As long as I bear no part of that higher cost, I'm indifferent to it.

And: I have the AutoSet II with heated humidifier, which sells for $995 US on CPAP.com. Just so we're comparing apples to apples, if you convert that to CDN at today's rates, that's about $1265 CDN for the machine + humidifier, with my mask adding another $165 US/$210 CDN, and the hose I've got adding another $15 US/$19 CDN, and the replacement filters another $14 US/$18 CDN, and the hose cover another $15 US/$19 CDN.

So if I was to buy my equipment on CPAP.com, that's $1,527 CDN at today's exchange rate, compared to the $500 I actually spent (for mask, machine, humidifier, hose, hose cover, 1 year of filters). And if you want to compare the "real" cost of $1700 to the CPAP.com cost, there's only a difference of $173 CDN, which is a far cry from $1200.

Just for the record, your equipment can be purchased online at Direct Home Medical for $669 (Autostat II, H4i, hose, card, bag, etc) and $155 for the Quattro FFM delivered. At today's exchange rate that equals $1047 (CDN) versus the $1700 co-paid by you and the province. Had the qualifying subsidy of $1120 paid by the province gone to the internet purchase, your cost would have been nil.

Everybody pays when government operates inefficiently.

Well, I do think this is a cool discussion and I am no fan of either government, or inefficiency.

And I totally take your point, Spit; that we all pay (whether directly or indirectly) when governments operate inefficiently, whether it is w/r/t the ADP program or bailouts of toxic assets.

However, there is a difference between the theoretical "this is how it would work IF the ADP funds were spent most efficiently" and how it actually works now - or, at least, how it actually worked for me, when I was purchasing equipment last month.

Perhaps I could get both your Dr's name and DME
My Dr would not provide me with the necessary script based on my condition although he provided me with one I could use with CPAP.com
As I mentioned I wanted an Auto machine and couldn't get one under the terms stated in the OHIP agreement. My Dr just would not do it.
If I had been able I would have purchased the whole package in Ontario as my supplementary insurance would have paid the difference. Cost $0.00
I did get the basic CPAP humidifier and mask for nothing. I now have 2 machines an auto and the basic CPAP
Next time I'll get what I can in Ontario sell it on ebay or wherever and use the proceed to buy what I want online The total out of pocked will be about zero
I do believe there is a problem with the way the gov't subsidies are applied and that as a result of the funding the DME's are factoring that into their pricing
As a result we all pay more one way or another!

You can purchase the supplies on Dundas ST W, in the mall beside Canadian Tire just beyond Kipling Station. (Beside Curves)

I too would like to get the name of the Dr. and DME please... I'm still a newbie and doing as much research as possible right now trying to find what my options are to get the best possible machine for myself... people have told me at a prescribed pressure setting of 7 I do not need an auto machine... but I haven't had any relevant testing done yet with an actual cpap machine to determine if there is much fluctuation when I sleep in different positions... either way, if auto machines can work like a "strait cpap" machine then that is what I would want... my clinic and dme now are very stubborn about even talking about auto machines etc....

Wulfman - of course it matters where you buy something, regardless of where it was made. Your country will get the benefit of taxes, if nothing else, though I'm sure there are probably other similar reasons.

For Any replacement supplies or masks, you should call or go to CPAP DIRECT LTD. They have the best prices, and are really well known for their follow-up services. They have 2 locations; one in Scarborough 416-298-6727 and Richmond Hill 905-771-6727.

I Second that! My dad and I are both on CPAP, and they've provided really amazing follow up services! No complaints at all. I would have considered getting a machine from cpap dot com, but I had insurance so in the end I paid less and have great post purchase services!
