I hope UPPP surgery (carving out the soft palate) is not one of the "etc." surgeries "for sleep apnea" that a doctor is urging you towards, library teacher.

While waiting for others to post their experiences, here's a link to many topics of discussions worth reading about various kinds of surgeries:

Had a guy in for training at our company a few weeks ago, he had the UPPP along with tonsils, adenoids, sinus polyps, et. Said the UPPP was extremely hard to adjust to, he was having to retrain himself to eat...he finally found out what the uvula was for, it was to guide the food into the food pipe keeping it from backup in to the sinuses. Said he'd have the other surgery again, but NOT the UPPP.

It takes several weeks to eat solid food after getting tounsils removed. I lost 22 pounds though. The rest is a piece of cake. I had radiofrequency turbinate reduction. It took two weeks to breath threw my nose, but what a difference now.I had septum fixed ,turbinate reduction and resection, tounsils removed, uvala reconstructed and tounge advancement. Any questions feel free to ask. I am 3 months out from surgery now.

I had the UPPP surgery only; I had my tonsils removed as a youngster. I don't recommend the UPPP for anyone trying to reduce snoring or avoiding CPAP therapy. It was extremely painful, I had everthing I drank for the next several weeks coming out of my nose, and it didn't work.
