gluing the mask on

Post by nobody » Sun Feb 15, 2009 7:53 am

Do you think I could use spirit gum to glue the mask on so it doesn't leak?

I am very new and this may be meaningless.... but as I firefighter we used to use vaseline to help maintain a good seal on aipacks for guys with more than a day or two of stuble. Not sure if it would work but there must be something out there that will.

although.... now that I think about it, petroleum is probably not good for your mask. good luck.

Oh, I should add too that I was reading this:

http://www.sleepapnea.org/resources/pubs/pioneer.html

which is a very interesting history of CPAP. It seems they initially glued the masks on. So why can't I glue my mask on I thought. I'm sick of the leaking.

As a side note, I can't believe this has only been around since the early 80s! I just had the idea CPAP was, uh, always around or at least a lot longer than it has been.

I might try it anyway. The mask is useless otherwise so I really have nothing to lose.

Ive used glue and it works pretty well. Im having leak probs so I may go back to it.

The first thing I tried was artificial eyelash glue, its kind of rubbery and it works very well. It comes in small tubes in the cosmetic section of the drugstore. It goes a LONG way.

Another one I used successfully is ostomy glue, the stuff they use to glue the ostomy appliance to the skin.

Both work, the eyelash glue works better and I have no idea if they harm the mask. So far so good though.

Make sure the glue you are using isn't petroleum based. The petroleum based break down the seal of the mask.

That is why you do not want to use vaseline as it is petroleum based, along with some of the moisturizers out there.

From another thread...
alnhwrd wrote:I use the Ultra Mirage II Nasal mask. It has worked well for me. I know you are supposed to change the cushion more frequently, but I have been using the same one for over a year and it works just fine. I do use a rope of Mack's Silicone earplug around the cushion which gives me a great seal and lets me keep the headgear from being too tight. If you are wondering, Mack's is a soft silicone product that comes in lumps. It is marketed as a material to make form fitted earplugs, but works great to improve the seal on a cpap mask. I take a lump of Macks, split it in two and roll each half between my palms to form two ropes about 1/8 inch in diameter. Place the ropes on the cushion where it touches your face to make a rough gasket between your face and the cushion. You might need a bit more to complete the circle. Put your mask on like normal and smoosh it down on your face. My average leak rate went way down once I started using it. Hope this helps.

SnuggleHose - Got the 8 foot and cut it down to 6, used the rest for mask hoses.
Memory Foam Pillow - Cut my own out of my Tempur-pedic pillow. (works great!)

Man, .... I've heard of sniffing glue, but this would be an extreme snif.

Oh I know. I was reading that Silastic Paste...um, isn't that silicone and doesn't that stuff STINK? It's got a very strong acidic smell, a lot like vinegar.

The macks silicone doesn't work. I tried it last night, didn't make any difference at all.

Hmmm, I wonder if that is why my quattro mask currently will not stick to my face. I have used petroleum jelly to moisturize my face. It gets so dry and inflamed, especially after shaving (even with an electric razor) that the PJ felt really nice. Do you know if dimethicone based moisturizer is ok?

So is this eyelash glue basically liquid latex? It kinda smells bad, does the smell get into your mask?
