I use a FFM and was having problems with dry mouth and throat, so I started taping. No more dryness. I use a little Chapstick on/around the lips before taping. It feels like the tape can't possibly hold, but when I take it off in the morning there's no doubt it's still holding tight. My wife does like to make fun of me, but she's sleeping much better, so it's worth it. Good luck.

Echo, that is as stupid as a question I asked this morning. The nurse called to tell me they had to catheterize my mother due to a suspected urinary tract infection. She mentioned the catheter several times and I finally had to ask, "Is the catheter connected to a bag?" Working long distance, it is more important mom's nurses remember who I am, than think I have any intelligence.

Read carefully dear Echo, the purpose of a FF mask is to allow air to pass into or out of your mouth without losing pressure on your airway. If you have air passing either direction through your mouth all night you might get a dry mouth. If you have taped properly air will not pass through your mouth.

I really don't want a full face mask - I guess the next step would be to try a papcap type thing.
elder, you are going to be ok.

When I was on my way to Walgreens to buy my first Polident strips,
I kept saying two things,
".....these people are crazy ........I can't believe I'm doing this ."
".....these people are crazy ........I can't believe I'm doing this ."
".....these people are crazy ........I can't believe I'm doing this ."

I couldn't look the clerk in the eye when I was paying....
I was sure she was thinking....
.....man, what a freak this guy is, he's probably gluing his mouth shut.

......well, the funny thing is, they worked...... great, but I couldn't take it....

then I went full.....and life is so good now.

......get the Papcap thing.......you are on the correct path.....keep going....you're doing great.
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."
I said that.

Personally, I'd feel more claustrophobic with my mouth taped, panty hose wrapped around my head and whatever other "lab rat" contraptions have been designed to keep a person's mouth from leaking.

I knew my limitations, so I started with a full face mask........and stayed there.

Den
Den, I'm the same way. When I first started, I knew I wouldn't be able to tolerate a FF mask because I'm claustrophobic. Turns out, not having a FF mask makes me feel claustrophobic. Not being able to open my mouth (no jokes) makes me panic, and taping my mouth is even worse. I think I lasted five minutes when I tried taping one time. I just go into a panic mode when I'm not wearing a FF mask. I think I lasted all of three days on a nasal-type mask before, as you did, realizing my limitations, and then giving in and ordering a Hybrid. And after all the masks I've tried since then, that's the one I've stayed with, although I occasionally use a UMFF.

I guess I just keep thinking that if the HH was high enough not to dry out the nose, then it shouldn't dry out the throat. Anyyyyhoooooooooo ......
That's the difficulty of abstract thinking versus anecdotal thinking. Glad this forum is anonymous. Did I mention I've recently had pneumonia? I suspect the antibiotics are killing off brain cells

Sorry to hear about your mum. And I hope the catheter was connected to a bag!

Adam and Eve were 100% nose breathers (original design). Then they had that run in with the snake and the apple and something went terribly wrong with breathing.

Thanks, and we hate you too...

Taping can be problematic, I would try a good chinstrap first. If my mouth stays shut then my tongue fills the inside of the mouth and forms an airtight plug behind the teeth.

Everyone is different, some people have a large mouth and a small tongue and don't get that seal.

I was a 'Blue Taper' for a while until switching over to the CPAP PRO, infamously known as 'nomask'. The 'boil and bite' makes it all but impossible to tape.

I'm getting tired of shelling out more money for my Cpap adventure and decided to search this web site for a solution. Alas, pantyhose!!

Average 90% leak and Average leak have become one line on my Encore Reports. And, leak rate is at or little less than CPAP PRO's Specs.

Much better than blue tape! Pantyhose has elasticity so keeps my jaw closed but if I get stuffy, I'm not ripping the mask off for air because my mouth is taped. Apneas are bad enough!!

Take care,

SG

The only thing I can add to this is that I have only been doing this cpap thing for a month
but started from day one with taping with the 2 inch 3m micropore tape from walgreens.
No problems with doing it except my lips are getting a bit sensitive now.
Nice low leaks and all....I thought I was gonna keep it up permanently until a couple of nights
ago at 3 am. I had the mother of all apneas and I woke up desperately trying to suck in a huge
amount of air to no avail because of the tape. Ripped it off real quick.
Scare the "bleep" out of me. I ordered a FFM.

P.S. I'm a diver too
Luke

So I taped last night - lip balm, lips slightly rolled in, 2 inch blue painters tape. I was absolutely sealed tight. Got up 3.5 hours later, was still sealed tight, took off the tape and slept the rest of the night without it. Doesnt seem like the tape significantly changed the leak numbers, although the curve is maybe less erratic. Obviously I cannt tell if the mask leaks when I am asleep, but when i wake, it seems fine. It was not leaking when I got up at 2AM.

I do see that off the tape, I never hit the max pressure at all... interesting. You can see the break at 3.5 hours into the session, where I took the tape off my face.
