So who had night ssweat before CPAP?

Post by elader » Fri Nov 21, 2008 11:56 am

So who had 'night sweat' before CPAP?

I never knew the two were connected, but I would wake up each and every morning soaked - shirt and pillow. From the first night on CPAP, it completely disappeared.

Such a savings on laundry bills alone.

They are caused by the Fight or Flight response due to out not getting enough O2, while having a Apnea event. Jim

I have night sweats, as well as day sweats. Have had them for as long as I can remember, so probably not associated with menopause

I usually wake up a few seconds before my internal furnace turns on. I have to throw off the covers and let the fan blow on me for a minute or two before I chill down. This happens sometimes 5 or 6 times a night. Once in a blue moon I will sleep through it, but usually wake up just before it hits. During the day it happens with stress (boss throwing a temper tantrum, late documents, car cutting me off, relatives waiting for dinner to be served, etc) and sometimes for no apparent reason. I have a little 5in fan in my office that I turn on and off a dozen or more times a day.

So far, on CPAP, I've had a couple, maybe three nights without waking multiple times. Dunno what causes it.

I definitely had night sweats before CPAP. Not every night but most of them. I don't think I've had one since I've been on CPAP.

Pre diagnosis, night sweats every night. My habit was to flip the pillow over to the drier side each time I woke up during the night.

All gone, btw. I do not miss night sweats or the nasty, turbulent dreams that often went with them.

Absolutely - wake, flip pillow, wake, flip pillow, etc. Stopped the very first night on the hose. It took me a few days to realize it.

I read of a sleep technologist who could tell which patients were suffering from apnea by the way their bed clothes smelled when he was wiring them up.

Me, but they are menopause related, not apnea related. Doc has prescribed effexor xr and it has helped a lot. Strange how an anti-depressant got rid of my night sweats...but it does work for perimenopausal women. Bev (and other women with hot flashes and night sweats), you might ask your doc about it...it might help....

I certainly did. Would wake up with my pillow soaked along with my t-shirt soaked at the neck and chest. Really weird. Had no idea it was because of my apnea. Since I've been on BiPAP - no sweats! Just pure 100% deep sleep, my brother!

I keep it 68 degrees in our bedroom at night and still had sweats before starting CPAP several years ago. Mine were so bad that we washed the sheets almost every morning because they would be soaking wet and smell. Since going on CPAP I have had only one or two incidents. This is actually due to hypoxia or a lack of oxygen according to my Dr. He is a GP and is my best friend, we grew up together and when I mentioned waking up sweating so oftenone day on the golf course he diagnosed me as having OSA then. He sent me to for a sleep study and sure enough he was right.
If it wasn't for my Marine son being deployed I would be sleeping good!

So far, all the males have been helped with CPAP and no females. Any others?

I used to have night sweats but haven't within the last year. Most recently I have been more warm natured than my husband. He would be bundled up with the sheet and heavy blanket and still he was cold and I was comfortable with just a sheet. That seems to have changed since I started CPAP. I am not as warm natured.

Something odd that I don't know whether it is SA related is that when I would take an afternoon naps I would get the chills as if I were sick - well knowing what I know now I guess I was sick in a sense, but not with a fever type sick.

I thought the sweats were caused by the heart getting an aerobic workout when the O2 dropped due to apneas.

I had a VA sleep doc who denied the sweats were caused by OSA. She also said that Encore was 100% accurate and that 17cm was not high enuff for a bipap. Needless to say, I do NOT see her any more, for any reason.

ps. sleeping at 68 degrees would cause me to sweat too.

I had night sweats all night before CPAP , at the end of my sleep study the teck informed me my body was in severe distress and the excessive sweating was a definate sign ,also my oxygen levals dropped down as low as 54.6 pre CPAP and at least the lowest with CPAP was 86.8 my normal base oxygen leval is 97.6 I definately know night sweats with some people is a sigh of distress, I also know differant masks can affect my sweat leval, I have not had one sweatty night until, last week when I tried pillows ; there not for me back to the nasel mask and blissfull dry sleep.

Yes I had night sweats - in fact my previous GP (the one I fired) tried to call it menopause and change my birth control. I called my gyne (excellent gyne but he don't know nothing outside his field and admits it) and told him what the other doctor proposed: His response was:"Is he nuts, you can't use that, what test did he run? I'll order the right test!" When the test came back he called me and said "I don't know what's causing your sweats, but it isn't menopause." The first time I heard that night sweats were related to apnea was when I fill out my questionnaire at my sleep study.

Exactly. Your body tries to get rid of fluids so the heart doesn't have to work so hard. Since you are not breathing the strategy doesn't work.

Add to Symptoms of Sleep Apnea list: "Wife complains for years that the sheets are yellow on your side of the bed."

With cpap my side of the bed is no longer yellow.
