My wife unplugged me

My wife unplugged me
I am a newbie. Have had ResMed unit about three weeks. My wife complains that the machine is "so loud that i can't sleep." She has gone so far as to unplug the unit during the night --while I'm using it.

I am tempted to return the unit and write off the cost, but wanted to offer up my dilemma to the group. Anyone else faced such drastic negative response? Any reasonable explanations I can use?

All feedback appreciated!

You might be having large mask leaks, or leaking out of your mouth - both of which will cause a sound much much louder than that of the machine... most machines are pretty quiet these days, so it's either the mask or the mouth!

By the way, why don't you register and join us on the forum. There is a lot of knowledge, wisdom, and support to be found here, especially for CPAP beginners.

Seriously, she either doesn't understand the risks of untreated sleep apnea, in which case she needs to be educated, or she does, in which case she needs to be prosecuted. If I were you, I would remind her of the "for better or worse; in sickness and health" part of the wedding vows (if they apply). Then I would move my equipment to another room and sleep with one eye open.

Not sure if that helps, but it's all I got right now,
Mike

I echo what echo said.

Here are some other things you might want to try . . .

Try putting the machine on the floor. The closer the machine is to carpet and fabric the better, as far as sound. Not so good for dust. But good for sound.

Try generating some noise with something else, like an electric fan, at night to hide the sound of the PAP machine. Aim the fan away from the sleeping area if you don't need the cooling.

Some have taken a styrofoam cooler, cut out one side, and put it over the machine to aim the noise away from the bed-partner. Don't cover the machine completely, of course. I heard that one guy made a plywood three-sided box and lined it inside with carpet.

Ear plugs can help, too.

My wife's view is that the sound of the machine is less obnoxious than my snoring, gasping, and breathing heavy. She says it is comforting to hear the sound--it tells her I'm breathing.

As far as I am concerned, your wife's unplugging your machine is the next best thing to her putting a pillow over your face while trying to strangle you. Unplugging the machine just takes a little longer to kill you.

What echo said........

But with that said, what she's doing is not cool!!!!! How absolutely selfish!!!! She obviously has no concept of the affliction and what the machine is doing for you and your overall health......
She needs some education (in both OSA and tolerance/considerationP) as well as perhaps some earplugs...Personally, I wear earplugs nightly and I'M the one with the machine (wife snores like a chainsaw!!), so it's just something to get used to.....
You can try a "white noise" generator of some sort -- google on it and see what you find. Fans work also.....
You can sleep in another room, or ask her to sleep in another room....radical, but effective.....

BUT, the solution is NOT to get rid of the machine and write off the treatment!!!!! That's the very last thing you would even want to consider!!!!!!!! The treatment is extremely important to your continued health and she needs to know and understand that......either that or she's upped your life insurance and is making an attempt at collecting.......

cheers

Got a spare bedroom? One of you may need to move for the time being. ("giving up" is not an option)
You left us with too many "unknowns" to make recommendations. (Machine/specific model, mask, pressure, machine location?)

Den
(5) REMstar Autos w/C-Flex & (6) REMstar Pro 2 CPAPs w/C-Flex - Pressure Setting = 14 cm.
"Passover" Humidification - ResMed Ultra Mirage FF - Encore Pro w/Card Reader & MyEncore software - Chiroflow pillow

I would think unplugging the machine is even worse than not using the machine at all. With a mask and hose on, how can you even get any oxygen if the machine isn't on? I suffocated with a pressure of 5. I would hate to try and breath through the hose with a pressure of 0!

Agree -- how soon can you get to an attorney and file divorce papers?

Make sure she doesn't get any life insurance money if you were to die.

Return the wife....write off the cost. She doesn't like you.

Keep the ResMed. Unlike the wife, it's trying to keep you alive.

Wow!

Your wife sounds decidedly nonsupporting.

Even if she has a lack of understanding of the condition... did she have any idea at all of what the potential consequences could be of unplugging the machine while you were sleeping?

Could be grounds for divorce.

I was wondering how my ex-wife was doing these days. I'd heard she'd gotten remarried.

Good luck. She's wrong, that's obvious.
