Encore Pro On Vista
Hello All!
I'm now running Vista Ultimate x64 bit version. No way in hell are you gonna be able to install Encore Pro. It's not so much the software. It's the drivers for the Smart Card reader. There aren't any 64 bit drivers out there for it and never will be. So I created a virtual machine with windows 2000. Still no go. Since the virtual machine emulates the environment it causes data errors. Your card reader will show up but once you try to download the data from it. It crashes.
Anyone have Encore working XP SP3 yet? I tried on my laptop. Nope the SQL server just crashes. I did the advanced setup and still not working. What I'll have to do is wipe out the laptop and put sp2 only. Man what a mess!

I'm still at SP2 - one thing I learned, if it ain't broke, don't f* with it, meaning fix it of course!!
I have seen it working on Vista but it was Vista Home.
Anyway, Good to see ya again.
Good Luck,

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Hi,
Sorry you have had all this trouble, I never could get Encore Pro installed on my Vista either...
I just went to Windoes Update and it says there that Windows XP SP3 is ready and available to download, it also says it can be removed one it has been installed if you choose not to keep it!
Just go to Control Panel:
Add/Remove Programs and remove it there, no need to restore your PC!
I already have Encore Pro in my Windows XP SP2 Desktop PC and now i'm afraid to try to install the SP3!
Did you have Encore Pro installed on your XP sp2 PC before you installed the sp3?
Let us know, I am curious to find out if I should dload the sp3 on my XP!
Goodluck and Thanks.

I installed Encore Pro on XP SP2. I recently loaded SP3 and have not seen any difference in the operation of Encore Pro. I will have to admit I did not load it with SP3 already installed but I really don't see how it would make any differance since it seems to run ok with SP3. But, Encore Pro especially the SQL data base can be a real pain sometimes.
If you have ever tried to load it the key to getting it to load is to be sure and remove all traces of the SQL Database before trying to reload.

Thanks All!
I've been building systems for years. You always learn something new. You think that you got down and you enough. NOPE. You have to force yourself to learn and evolve. The technology is always changing.
SP3 is an automatic download. However, there is a little app out there that writes to the registry to block SP3. My problem I beta test everything. I have machines here to go around. Also, now with virtualization, it's even easier to test stuff. Here I'm swapping parts building system, servers. You name it I got.
As for the Encore Pro. I'll look at the log file and see where SQL failed. I rather see why it failed then just blow out the laptop. If not I'll just throw in my unattended slipstreamed XP SP2 disc in there. In 20 mins it will be like new. All I have to do it put the disc in and walk away.

I updated to SP3 a few weeks ago and it totally screwed up my internet access for that machine. I had to restore it to previous SP2 state and disable the automatic updates.
I think it is MS way of forcing people to migrate to Vistas since there has been so much reluctance. Them devious MS tyrants!
I plan to avoid any further updates to XP.

At work I hear this all day long. I had a lady that has sp3 auto download. Next morning all 3 or her systems are destroyed. As for updates. There is some nasty stuff going around. People make sure that your systems are patched. PLEASE, make sure you have protection and it's up to date.DreamStalker wrote:I updated to SP3 a few weeks ago and it totally screwed up my internet access for that machine. On July 8th a patch for DNS was released. In an attempted to patch the vulnerability they broke Zone Alarm. I haven't used Zone Alarm in years. There is also fly-by-attacks. All it takes is to visit a site and caught something.
Let me give you people and example.

FWIW.......earlier this month when I updated my Microsoft XP patches and security updates (SP2), there were updates for the DT3500 reader and an update for the SQL software used by Encore Pro version 1.6i (in the optional updates).

I've been using Vista since it was first released. I have the 64-bit ultimate on one computer and the 32-bit business edition on the other. Encore and/or card reader will not work on Vista 64-bit (I don't think it will work on the rarer XP 64-bit either). Encore/card reader is the reason I ended up getting a second PC using a 32-bit version of Vista.
If I remember correctly, the EncorePro install cancelled almost immediately when I tried to install on 64-bit version with an error message that clarified the problem.

Posts like this scare me! I'm not very computer savy. I could not make one work if some one put all the parts on a table in front of me. What are we going to do when MS forces us to abandon what we have. My XP machine is getting kinda old and I am beginning to worry about how much longer it will last. Was going to buy a copy of XP (since my machine did not come with the program) while I can still buy it but computer techs tell me that if I buy a new maching there is a very good chance that the drivers for the hardware won't be available to go back to XP. If I buy it right now "maybe" a year down the road most likey not. We can no longer get Encore Pro upgrades thanks to Respirionics and even what we have now apparently only works on the Vista 32 Bit operating system (maybe if you hold your mouth just right) and isn't that what MS is trying to kill so that everything will be 64 bit. Has anyone tried Viewer on the 64 bit systems? Sure hate to go to Viewer since I will lose so much ability to look at trends with Pro Analyser but I guess it is better than nothing if they upgrade it to work on the 64 bit systems. Had a computer friend tell me how great the 64 bit system was because it runs 8 or 16 times faster than what I have. Heck I can't work fast enough to keep up with what I have.

Most people don't need a 64-bit machine. I did it because I like to experiment but ended up with a second machine with 32-bit Vista in order to run those things that couldn't on 64-bit. I am under the impression that Vista 64-bit is better supported by third-party software than 64-bit XP (because 64-bit XP is a rarer bird).
I wouldn't worry about it - just get 32-bit. I've found Vista to be pretty stable -- even 64-bit. The main problem I had with my 32-bit Vista was a nasty crash problem that turned out not to be Microsoft-caused. It was bad firmware on the hard drive. Once that fix was available and I applied it, it has been fine every since.
My 64-bit Vista has been amazingly stable and is much nicer now that more software is compatible with it.

Mindy, isn't MS's aim to do away with the 32 bit system all together. The 32 bit is just to apease the people and be a transision for us that don't want to give up XP. Won't it go away as soon as Vista is excepted by the masses. I know I don't need 64 bits but if that is all I can buy?

Hi Jerry,
I wouldn't presume to guess what MS is planning! However, I would think that eventually 64-bit will become standard. I'm foggy at the moment what problem it solves .... either it's the bus width and affects speed of data transfer or it's the width of the addresses the OS can accomodate. If it's the latter, then it would be necessary in order to keep increasing amount of memory that can be accessed. I'm fuzzy on which it means since I'm a little out of date. I'm sure one our computer gurus can help us out here.
In any case, the hardware and OS makers have to keep up with software requirements and the speed people want. I haven't seen a slowdown in this process since I started in the mid 1960's. Back then people were cheap and computers were very expensive so we had to "desk check" our code with the goal that a program would run first try (or at least second). Now that people are expensive and computers cheap (it's all relative), computers need loads of memory and speed so programmers don't have to spend the time to be efficient
