You know, I've bought every diet book known to man. Most of them are "reasonable". One or two have been schlock and have been dumped (That Trudeau "Natural Cures" guy needs to be shot). I've read Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Atkins, South Beach, Dr. Mercola.... I'm drawing a blank. I know there's more on that shelf.

I find myself numbed by having to read endless medical theories until I can weed out the "What do you want me to eat, and when?" and when I get there, alot of times it's completely unreasonable.

I am NOT going to get up every morning and fix an entirely exotic and different breakfast every single day. I can't afford the money, time, or energy for that.

I am NOT going to come home at lunch and stir fry baby scallops in saffron oil. Ditto the above reasons.

I can eat NORMAL food, simply prepared. I'm not a cook. If I was, I probably wouldn't live on fast food and frozen meals.

The cost of meals prepared and delivered is prohibitive.

Right now I'm living on grilled skinless chicken breasts (Marinated in lime juice, garlic, cilantro, and Montreal Chicken Seasoning) (My own invention - amazingly good) and brown basmati rice. And the occasional grilled corn on the cob when I have the energy. Unfortunately I BUY salad fixings and they die in the fridge.... sigh... I don't know why I can't be bothered to FIX the salad...

I'm in favor of dieting in theory. In reality, it needs to be made much simpler and easier.

Your story about your coworker is very heartening to me.

Feel free to PM me some links to "Babette". Or post them here.

I read somewhere that that Trudeau guy is actually a real-life convicted con-man and after getting out of jail began writing and selling his con books which are now under investigation by US attorney for false and misleading information.

I think I know what you mean about cooking. About five or six years ago I too lived on fast food until I read the book “Fast Food Nation” which finally convinced me to learn to cook my own food.

I watched the Food Network channel almost religiously for about a year, got myself some high quality cookware (PM me if you really want to know what basic cookware to start out with), and became a really good cook (might be a major reason why my wife keeps me around). I learned a lot of the basics watching Alton Brown’s “Good Eats” show … a technical but fun and easy to understand approach. http://www.altonbrown.com

Buying and cooking your own food is the simplest way to manage the quality and quantity of what you eat. For maximum efficiency, I do grocery shopping twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays), and I do most of my cooking on the weekend then freeze leftovers for lunch during the week. So having a good set of freezer-to-microwave containers is also important. It may be a significant investment up front but once you get in the groove of cooking for yourself, you will be eating healthier, higher quality, better tasting food at a lower cost than the unhealthy fast food.

Most every diet book has some unique gimmick for marketing purposes and over the past couple of years I have read a lot of books about healthy nutrition/diets and the basic common threads in all of the good ones are:
1) eat whole (unprocessed or refined), natural (organic if possible), fresh (the more locally grown the better) food;
2) eat frequent but smaller portioned meals;
3) and move the body … find some physical activity that is fun and do it every day (yes, this may include sex as long as it is done for 30 minutes or more every day).

Remember that a diet is only temporary unless you change your lifestyle and learning to cook your own diet food is a change in lifestyle.
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

DS, all excellent advice!! Thank you much!!!

I TRY to follow these guidelines, but low energy and the sense of overwhelming tasks to complete gets in my way and sabotages my best intentions.

I actually DO have a nice set of cookware. I'd love a recommendation on a brand of freezer-to-wave containers. I've recently had to freak out and throw out all my #7 pthalate-containing plastics.

Summer is easier for me - because I am perfectly happy grilling a chicken breast and eating it with rice. Of course rice is one of the bad carbs, according to Dr. Sears... AND, I am less busy at work, so I can go home at lunch and eat a sandwich, vs. jetting off to Mickey-D's for the #4, to eat at my desk.

I LOVE Alton Brown!!! He really explains things well. I am also a big fan of America's Test Kitchen, and Rachel Ray. Occasionally I watch Bobbie Flay. I think it's really mean that my gym insists on playing The Food Network over the treadmills.

Sigh... I'm never buying anything off TV again without consulting Wikipedia. Or this forum.

At least I got $15 back from my $30 rip-off by re-selling them to another fool on Craigslist.

Babette.........I think I found out about my blood type when I was tested for my Rh factor when I got pregnant.
According to "Eat Right for Your Type" (and I'm not saying that's all true), Type O blood is the oldest and used to eating meat, nuts, berries, veggies, etc. Then a few thousand years later (or more) types A and B came on the scene around the time that agriculture and grain-growing got started. Supposedly A's and B's are more able to efficiently digest grains.
I absolutely, positively do better when I leave out the grains.......but its awful hard since the grain stuff tastes so good (breads, pastas, popcorn, and just about everything). And it seems that if something isn't a grain, a grain by-product is put into it.
And what's weird is that it seems like the worse something is for us, the more we crave it.
I can be doing fine with healthy eating and love it. Then I get cocky and think I can eat one brownie. Well, a whole pan of brownies later and I'm in the gutter, looking for ice cream, chips, cake, cookies...........and then I have to go back into detox. Life can be so cruel.

I have done quite a bit of research and gone to several weight loss programs. The cutting edge weight loss program that I started attending in 1980 was run by a leader in the field of bariatrics and did a lot of research that is now current.

Here are a couple of things that I should like to address:

1. Rice: White is the culprit, but brown rice is a whole grain. It is considered a complex carbohydrate. Notice that Babs is using brown basmati rice.

2. Zone Diet: I find it interesting that establishing the carbohydrate level is testing blood sugar after eating a specific carbohydrate. My educated guess is that there is an overwhelming amount of complex carbohydrates and very few simple ones on a diabetic's list.

3. Pasta: One thing that I absolutely could not eat without creating a disaster --pasta.Image (Note: Pasta was a simple carb until recently...the addition of whole grains and protein, among other things, has made it able to be eaten by me without a consequence. Of course, that is IF the high-protein and fiber type is consumed.)

IF I were to eat a simple carbohydrate, and sometimes I do, then it would take me 3 days to fight that urge to have more. At the 3-day mark, I would be done with the cravings.

4. Carbohydrates: This speaks to the issue of simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbs are made of flour and/or sugar. These items are refined and the fiber has been removed. They are therefore digested quickly and cause a spike in blood sugar. This causes the 3-day craving experience somehow, IMHO--but I've never seen any research on that 3-day experience.

5. Avoiding flour, sugar, and white potatoes almost ALWAYS results in weight loss. Don't ask me why sweet potatoes are allowed; but they apparently are digested as a complex carbohydrate despite their name. I guess there is a reason for testing the white potato for starch in our HS science class...that starch is easily converted to sugar.

This site explains the diet books and best weight loss programs. The article on the site is written by a Registered Dietician, who endorses the complex carbohydrate method. There are additional links in the article.

Click here for a Discussion of Diet Books and Weight Loss Products

6. Carb Addicts: In my experience, many of the concepts in the "Carbohydrate Addict's Diet" series of books rang true for me. The books are written by a married couple, one an MD and one a psychologist. They have based their books on research, and have used their recommendations on themselves.

Click Here for a List of Carbohydrate Addict Books on Amazon

7. Exercise: Research shows that a MINIMUM of 2000-2100 calories PER WEEK need to be burned by exercise in order to have weight loss maintained long term. One way is to wear a pedometer that counts steps, and to have 10,000 steps per day.

Click Here for 10,000 Steps ProgramImage

Strength training develops more muscle mass. It may be wise to measure the inches lost at various parts of your body, as muscle tissue is heavier than fat tissue. So, if a strenuous strength program is undertaken, then progress may not always show itself on the scale. Still, building muscle does help to burn calories.

The most important thing about exercise is to do enough. Variety helps some of us, as does music. (It is the Pur-Sleep of weight loss...having a nice added benefit makes it easier to comply.)

AND: THANK YOU FOR NOT MENTIONING WILL POWER!

Don't we have that if we can comply with cpap--not to mention any number of wacky diets. (And I think we have ALL tried at least one that was wacky.)

I did not mean to write an essay. However, I had to add these points to the thread. I truly hope that even one of the suggestions will help someone.

You are more than welcome, Babette. We all have to find our own answers, and I'm sure there is WAY more to the story.

And keep to the brown basmati rice...you have it together there.

Oh, I meant to say, that I used to be able to eat pasta with impunity. About two years ago - that all changed. I can't eat a plate of pasta now without feeling sick and very tired.

I switched to whole grain with added protein, and I'm okay. I still don't eat much of it.

I CAN still manage Mac & Cheese out of a box, but I suspect it's because it's made of TREES (aka cardboard) and there's actually no WHEAT PRODUCTS in the pasta...

LOL,
Babs

According to what I've heard/read, they haven't even been able to determine whether it WAS the tomatoes. They've been looking at peppers and other things, too.
On a recent trip to San Joaquin valley, I noticed new, multiple porta potties in the fields. Hopefully this will keep pickers from pooping in the veggies.

Nothing like a reaction to a bad salad to keep us from enjoying a good sleep at night.

I do the same thing. I always say even good intentions are paved on the road to hell. I've gotten around this by buying bags of broccoli slaw. It's a mixture of julienned broccoli stems, carrots and cabbage. Broccoli is really good for you. I put a litte Lite House Blue Cheese vinegarette or Cardini's Balsamic Vinegarette on it. It is better than a traditional salad IMHO.

Karen,
That's an excellent bit of info.
When I tell people I'm a sugar/carb addict, they laugh and say "so am I." But I'm totally serious. Just like you, if I eat a carb that I have trouble with, I fall down into a big black awful hole with binge-eating.
I'm afraid I'm not able to stay away forever from the bad stuff though. I guess there's so many emotional issues involved. My mother used to tell me that when I was little, if I cried, she'd stick a cracker in my mouth. Thanks mom. You idiot. (sorry......that was just one of the many really stupid things she did).
It takes me 3-4 days to detox from too many carbs too. Its a rough 3-4 days, but then it gets much easier......until I fall for "I'm okay. I can eat just one brownie".
Its going to be a struggle forever though.

What I found the worst for me is corn syrup. We used to have pancakes and syrup every Saturday morning, until I finally realized that's why I spent the rest of the day in an angry rage, couldn't think straight, and feeling exhausted. And corn syrup is in just about everything now.
I also seem to go through spells where I can tolerate some things more than at other times.
DH is the type of person who decides very matter-of-factly that if something is bad for him, he just never eats it again. Lucky him.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is made by Satan.

I hear ya' girls! Welcome to my club!!! Well, I gotta go get more chicken to grill, and contemplate the purchase of vegies. Thanks for the tip on the broccoli slaw. That might be nice with a vinaigrette.

Cheers,
B.
