Are the foam mattresses hot?

Post by GoodnightHoser » Thu Jul 10, 2008 10:44 pm

I'm looking for a new mattress and need some opionions. They had a foam mattress at the sleep clinic and I was glad to try it out--but as we all know your first night on a sleep study isn't exactly RESTFULL. I'm normally kind of hot at night and don't want to invest money in a foam mattress or even a topper if it's going to make me HOTTER! Who's got one out there that can advise me?

I have a Memory Foam topper on my mattress and I have never noticed sleeping any hotter than I normally have.

The answer is No, it does not make you hot, just put your sheets on as usual and you should be fine. I think mine is a 2 incher, we love it.

We have a pillow top mattress and it developed dips on either side and the memory foam actually corrected this problem, I had previously bought a feather bed but it did not take the dips out but the foam did!

I tried everything, folded comforters, etc. on each side of the bed, nothing worked!!!

You will really like the memory foam, BTW, did you sleep hot the night you had the sleep study?

I forgot to mention, I bought mine at Mervyn's for about $150.00 (on sale) for the cal king size, I think they are regular $200.00 for that size!

Whatever you do, don't get one a Walmart unless you would like it to be (1/2 regular cotton mattress fill and the top piece is foam), it weights a ton and it's as hard as a rock! The real memory foam topper shouldn't be all that heavy!

Was it memory foam? I had one on trial. It's not that memory foam makes you hotter than anything else, but because more of the bed is now in contact with your body, thanks to the contouring properties of memory foam, it may feel warmer. I noticed this when I slept on one.

I hated the one I trialled. It felt like sleeping in quicksand and each time I tried to move it took a herculean effort and I woke myself up. If CPAP wasn't enough to contend with!

It had a 4lb density. I'm going to try a different topper which is closer to the density of Temperpedic foam.

I also have the 3 inch memory-foam topper for my mattress and the memory-foam pilllows for the past 5 years...

I only use cotton sheets on it, and never found it to be hot.

This is the most confortable thing I ever have slept on. I previously had problems sleeping on my side ( side-sleeper) , but since I bought the memory foam I'm as good as new !
We have a regular-sized bed, but I bought some queen-size sheets to go over it all; everything holds in place and it fits real good.

My adolescent daughter has it all too...says it's the best!

I also have the pillows. very comfy, but I do find them a bit hot in the mid- summer months....but still prefer them to any other type ( and I've tried a lot ! Some gals shop for shoes, me it's pillows!).

To keep it nice and even, I turn it around about every 6 months....never had any problem with it.

I truely think it's the best thing around, at least for us.

You could try it out...most matresses come with a short period for a return or exchange policy.

I have a Tempurpedic (the "Deluxe" version) and like it. It does not make me feel hot.

You can get a memory foam mattress with a top layer of heat-dissipating memory foam. We got one from costco.com a year ago and really like it. (At the time, it was only available online, the store only carried the regular ones)

I would recommend buying a good mattress WITHOUT MEMORY FOAM BUILT IN, and then buying a topper.

The topper will wear out before the mattress does. If your foam is built into your mattress, you'll just end up having to put another topper on it eventually, anyway.

My mother is a big foam mattress fan. She sleeps on a 100% foam mattress. It wears out about every 6-7 years. She has to replace the entire mattress. But, she knows how to buy the foam directly from a foam supplier, and doesn't put a cover on it - just uses sheets. So her cost is considerably less than buying a "designer name brand" foam mattress.

The foam you want is called "tempur" and "visco" in the industry. If you look in the phone book, you'll probably find a foam vendor in your area. Lots of mom and pop shops have sprung up selling "knock off" foam mattresses lately - they are your best bet.

If you luck into a topper that is too big for your mattress, but on super sale (like I did) you can cut it down to size very easily with an old fashioned electric carving knife, like your grandma used on her Thanksgiving turkeys. I got mine from a rummage sale for $2.

Yeah, I sleep on a less expensive, non-name brand, innerspring mattress. Then I put a nice plushy memory foam topper on it.

I used to work for a big foam vendor here in town. Which is where I got all my freebie foam pillows, and how I know you don't need to spend big bucks to get all the benefits of foam pillows and toppers.

Cheers,
Babs

Oh, BTW, foam is NOT hot. I feel no difference from sleeping on a foam topper and a foam pillow than from sleeping on a non-foam mattress and a regular poly-fill pillow.

Same heat level, not a problem.

Cheers,
B.

I guess I'm definitely in the minority here, as it did make me feel very hot. I woke up so much when using this, and was always burning up. I'd move to a cooler place on the mattress, go back to sleep, and wake up an hour so later burning up again. I've known one other person who had this problem, but also know several people who love this type of mattress and have no "heat" problems at all.

Tempurpedic

Post by Arizona-Willie » Fri Jul 11, 2008 10:42 am

We bought a Tempurpedic two years ago and it has been great.

When researching about them I saw some people said they were hot so I never told Da Boss about that.

She is one of those women who could be sitting naked on an Alaskan galcier eating ice cream in January and would complain she was hot.

She has NEVER mentioned feeling hot on this mattress and she did on some previous regular type mattresses.

Since we bought this one they have come out with new models that are supposed to alleviate the problem a few people seem to have with heat. Although I don't see why... for us there has been no problem at all with either the mattress or the Tempurpedic pillows. Da Boss even drug her pillow on a cruise with us last year.

The Tempurpedic is pricey but worth every penny.

GoodnightHoser......

I suspect that the answer to your question...is....that there is no answer. It's an individual thing. One person will be too hot on a foam mattress...and another person won't be.

I've had such a problem with "mattress over-heat" that I've fabricated a heat exchanger...circulating cooled water through a NASCAR type Cool-Shirt...and I sleep on top of it. The Cool-Shirt was developed from NASA technology that evolved from the problem of keeping guys in space-suits cool.

My system works nicely....and it conquers the problem of body-heat buildup between me and the mattress.

So, I guess the best suggestion I have is....test the mattress of your choice. That's the only way I know of to determine which mattress will work for you.

Hi---I have a Tempurpedic (the "Deluxe" version) Topper from COSTCO--the CAL KING was like $130.00 -it is really worth it if you are a side sleeper!!! Try it before you by a whole mattress made out that stuff. It is not hot either--I live in AZ and have air on every day 24/7 --never noticed it being hot.

Hmm. How interesting that all say their memory foam mattress is not a warmer bed. We've had our Tempurpedic for about 4-5 years (Celebrity Queen), and both my wife and I noticed that it was significantly warmer that our old, traditional matress. I was really surprised by others' responses to that question.

I love my temperpedic mattress. It is 3 inch foam on top of more firm foam. The whole mattress is not supposed to be on top of another box spring but a plain board - which mine is. The whole mattress is warrentied for 20 years. I do not get overly hot except when the heat in the summer would do it anyway. I do get night sweats on occasion but I think those are due to my apneas and menopause as they don't seem to be related to temperature of the bed.

There is a good bunch of articles on epinion.com if you put in memory foam.

My son has the bed topper - 3 inches also. There is a big difference between his bed and mine. I prefer mine. We got the topper to put on an air mattress when I go camping. That was before I knew what was really keeping me awake. It helped my sleep a lot.

I dont' yet have my cpap machine so I can't tell you how they work together. My guess is that it will be fine. One nice thing about the foam is that hubby doesn't wake up to my tossing and turning (he never woke to my snoring - he thought I rarely snored until my sleep study showed otherwise). So his sleep is less disturbed.

If you have the money, I highly recommend the temperpedic (and don't get a kick back). One of the reasons I chose this instead of a copy is that the epinion reports showed more people who got hot in bed on the copies instead of the temperpedic. Maybe it is the type of foam in the lower part of the mattress. None of them are full memory foam. They don't work that way.

To determine how much memory foam you want, you need to check on one of their websites for how much is good for back, side, and tummy sleepers. My three inches is for side and tummy sleepers.

There has to be a way to use the air coming from our machines as an air conditioner. Hmmmmm....
