How Fat Are You?
ps.
ps. I've low carbed for two years but allowed myself to eat the "franken foods" and sometimes indulge in what the rest of my family ate that was high carb...I did not have much energy then. Just this past week I've been doing a more purist form and even though I have apnea, I feel more energy than I have in a very long time!!!! Terry
OK, SWTE, you've shamed me into posting. grrrrrr *g*
Actually, I've been thinking about posting on this thread for a while. I'm kinda sorta in-between, bodywise. I'm 5'8" tall and weigh 170. I need to get about 15 lbs lighter to be at a good BMI, but if I can get down to 145 or 150, I'd be at my ideal weight.
As far as exercise, diet, lifestyle change, etc. About 10 years ago, I worked for 3 years as a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor at a health club in Galveston, TX. At the time, I was still 5'8", and weighed 145 lbs. I got my % body fat down to 9% at one time, but it was taking at least an hour every day M-F plus 2 hours of treadmill time on Sunday. I loved the work, but the pay sucked. I managed to get back into my profession (chemistry lab stuff) and the weight started slowly putting on. The last couple of years, I've gone up to 170 lbs and have a belly the size of the Titanic (according to my 8 year old son, it's "Enormous".)
I'm having a colonoscopy done tomorrow morning (your prayers would be appreciated) in preparation for a double hernia operation in mid-July. I figure about 6-8 weeks recuperation time after the operation, then I'll be in good enough shape to start getting in shape. It won't be a quick fix kinda thing, though. Start off with brisk walking for 15 minutes the first week, bump it up to 20 minutes the second week with 5-10 minutes slow jogging thrown in, a bit of weight training and push-aways (we all know what push-aways are, right? When you push away from the dining table before you've overeaten! LOL). Then increase time and weights gradually till I'm where I want to be. I figure in about 12-15 weeks (3 months) I'll have shed the needed weight (notice I'm avoiding saying that I'm going to "lose" weight. What happens when you lose something? Usually your subconscious says "Look for it until you find it!") and be able to run a 5K race without collapsing. I'm also planning on ceasing my smoking in the next few weeks (any hints or tips on that would be GREATLY appreciated!)
In the meantime, keep the faith ya'll. It's gotten much better for me and hopefully will get even better. We all deserve to be the best that we can be! Nope, it may not be easy, but it sure will be worth it, no??

exercise
Did you say exercise????????? Hmmm....well.....its taken years for me to ease into that habit. Since the end of Feb, when I got pneumonia that lasted a month and a half, then had probs w/seasonal allergies, followed by the Cleveland heat wave, I pretty much shelved the whole concept, so THANK YOU for reminding me.
For now my form of exercise has been housework and gardening. When I do and WILL AGAIN exercise in a more determined way (!!!!!!) it will most likely be walking in the metroparks (Ohio has a beautiful string of parks called the "Emerald Necklace") w/my dogs, doing the rebounder (an indoor mini trampoline that is easy on your joints, esp knees, works the whole body and is good for the lymphatic system because as you jump, it massages the lymphs), and maybe I'll bring out the old videos. We also have a treadmill which I longed for and now sits idle most days....I'm hoping as I have consistently used my cpap (last night was my first night), it'll put some pep in my step. Terry

Hopefully soon to be less!
I have reduced my diabetes Rx because I have been eating way more than I want to, just to keep my blood sugar up during the day because the Rx was too strong. Hopefully now it is at a more sane level where I can eat the portions and amount of food I actually want to eat. (Dr. said to give him a call if it doesn't work. If it DOES work, I should let him know in a couple of weeks. Great Doc!)

Re: Excercise
It was interesting last year when my wife had gestational diabetes. My first trip to the store I walked up and down the isles trying to find *something* without sugar or the infamous high fructose corn syrup. Not a whole lot out there. There's a little tiny section specifically for diabetics.2listless wrote: I thought I was doing a good thing eating "FAT FREE" foods...what a joke! Fat is exchanged for SUGAR to make it taste good. I learned the hard way...
Another little rant of mine, has anyone actually looked at the "nutritional" information on a can of "Slim Fast"? Compare it to a can of Pepsi. Same exact sugar amounts, same calories. Drink a can of Pepsi, pop a multi-vitamin, same effect. This is supposed to help people lose weight?
Work for me is the hardest. For years I've been drinking three or four cans of soda a day at work. At home I drink homemade decaf iced tea. I never crave soda at home. We don't even keep it in the house unless we've got people coming over. I've gotten down to drinking diet Coke at work and am weaning myself off of the caffine. By the end of the summer I hope to be caffine free. Just by cutting out the regular soda I'm saving myself a few hundred calories a day.
TX, Jim and Snowdog
Hey TX hope the colonoscopy went well....I had my first awhile back and compared to the prep for it, the colonoscopy was not difficult.
Let us know how you are doing....and speaking of prayer, I think its good to pray for all of us on this board with our unique challenges.
Jim and Snowdog, I used to love diet pop as a once in a blue moon treat, same w/sf chocolate. But I feel so much better off that stuff....checked my bp since doing the purist Neandrathin wol and it came down to about 98/65! I was able to cut one of my bp pills in half which will not only help my body feel better (who needs side effects) but also save us money each month.
I pushed the envelope today and had salty bacon (no sugar but still cured w/nitrates)...I felt it not long after, could tell it caused me to hold onto water again so its not worth feeding my salt addiction, which is a major trigger to overeat for me!!!! T

Terry, thanks for asking about the colonoscopy. They had to stick me 3X before the IV got inserted, but that was the worst part (other than the "prep" the day before! Sheesh! *g*). Yep, everything went well and I am back on my feet and off to work today.
I agree, all of us could use some prayer support. There's power in those kind of words!
Hang in there, ya'll!

Right there with ya on the slim fast. You really have to research products on the market. I've learned that Fat Free and Sugar Free are red flags because all they have done is replace one bad thing for another. The more natural and unaltered a product is the better it is. It's great that you are trying to cut down on the soda, but be careful of the diet sodas. Diet Coke contains splenda. Type splenda into a search engine and see what comes up. Another biggie to watch for is aspartame. The info on this is scary.

Flower,
Keep up the good job. I am just starting and have aprox. 100# to lose. I have been on my cpap for about 2 weeks and feel like doing something about this xtra baggage. I like your flower line. Visuals help me so I have 100 little red glass hearts. I have two jars, all the hearts are in one jar and when I lose weight, a heart goes into the other jar for each pound that I lose. But, if I gain weight, a heart has to go back to the other jar to be lost again. I liked the little red hearts because they remind me that I really need to take care of the one I have, especially since I have had a Heart Attack and do not want another. I am concentrating on not putting anything into my mouth unless it is good for me, drinking my 64 oz of h20, and adding a little exercise. I have a membership at the local YMCA and will start a commitment of going there again. Looking forward to hearing about less of you.

WEIGHT??
My 1st post. Thanks to you all, I have learned more from this site, than from the Med Pros. New to CPAP 05/05. Been on a roller coaster since. I'm 5'6" and weigh 205 at 48 ys old (single-female). Moderate OSA. Had thyroid checked, ok, cholestrol is 166. Glucose 108. Family history of Type 2 diabetes. Exercise is biking, walking, lift weights, do yard work (many flower beds/garden 1/2 acre). I keep busy!!! Can't lose weight to save my life, am toning up a bit though. Gained alot of weight around age 40. Used to be slim and trim. OSA and maybe perimenopause partially to blame???? Had Surgery in 1999 for deviated septum and Tonsillectomy/Uvulectomy in 02/05 because of growth by my uvula (Thank God, not cancer). Do you see a pattern here??? Help!!!
Good for you Harmony. I love the idea of little red hearts. In fact on another site, my "ticker" is a line of hearts with a flower going across. It is helpful to have something visual. We can do this sis, its a matter of finding what works for your body and after so many years of trying so many things...this is finally the wol I know is working for me longterm and I'm committed to it....I'm 53 and had given up because my weight wouldn't budge so I'm very relieved to see that this seems to be the key for how my body is put together. And I feel so good now between getting rid of foods that seem to be a problem for me and using the autopap. What a gift from God! Yes! Terry

Well! Turns out the CDC has overstated the obesity statistics by a factor of as much as 15X! So apparently the Obesity Epidemic is the epidemic that wasn't.
A new study, in fact, published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine seems to indicate that slightly (emphasis mine) overweight people may actually live longer than their thinner contemporaries.
Just think about what a huge lobby the diet industry is & it's easy to understand the agendas at work here. You can make junk science support about any premise you want to promote.
