ResScan, VAIO's & Ports - OH MY!

Hey All,

I finally got my own copy of ResScan 3.3 and I am having a very difficult time getting the card reader to be recognized by the software on my VAIO. I have checked all the obvious things. The drivers are properly installed. The device shows up as functioning properly in Device Manager. Smart Card services are started. I downloaded the ACR38 "Quickview" diagnostic utility from the ACS website (manufacturer of the card reader) and I am able to run full diagnostics & reset the card with no problems.

The problem is that from within ResScan, the device doesn't show up OR it will say "blank card" for a quick moment, then change back. I have disabled every other USB device that might be conflicting with no change.

I did try installing everything on my wifes computer and it worked flawlessly the first time so I know the reader/card are good. Of course, I could just keep using ResScan from my wifes computer (when allowed )but I would much rather have it on mine, plus I love a good mystery!

Obviously it is something "wonky" with my Vaio ports. Anyone have a similar experience?

Disable your wireless card. That was my problem.

I think I saw your old thread about that and tried that too. No dice.

Were you seeing the same behavior? (the "blank card" appearing & disappearing?)

Yep. Same problems. Are you sure your wireless card is disabled? I have proprietary software for my card (for SSID scanning) and I just check off "Disable Adapter" and it shuts it off. Otherwise go to control panel -> network connections -> right click: disable.

But you already knew that right?

Barry - I had exactly the same issue. I even have a switch on my laptop to disable the wireless card - no dice. You MUST right click the wireless adapter in the device manager and disable it.

I also plug in the card reader and put the card (upside down) into the reader before I start resscan - otherwise it seems to take an eternity for it to "see" the card.

I downloaded those same diagnostics BTW.

Ahhhhhh....I too have the wireless power switch on the front of my VAIO, and when I switch it off...it does show the wireless adapter as being "disabled". That being said however, I have not tried actually disabling the wireless adapter from within Device Manager, as I always assumed that the result would be the same. (And you know what they say about THAT! )

Knowing what I know about Windows (I am an MCSE) I admit that it is entirely possible that depending on where you disable a device, you could get a much different result!

I will give it a try tonight and report back. Thanks so much all!

Oh since you are MCSE I would get more technical.

By using that switch, you are only disabling the SSID searching of the wireless card. From what I can guess, the IRQ is still being given to the wireless card, but it acts like it is off since it just doesn't look for APs. By actually disabling the card, you are releasing the IRQ and the card reader can grab it and work properly, otherwise there is an IRQ conflict between the two.

Now THAT makes perfect sense. In situations like this, I miss the old days of actually being able to go into BIOS and set your IRQ's!

Just disabling the wireless adapter alone had no effect. Then I got to thinking abour IRQ's, etc, and realized that this machine has several on-board USB components. A DVD Burner, PCMCIA Slot, Biometric (fingerprint) scanner, a Webcam built into the screen, SD card slot and Sony Memory Stick card clot. <whew!>

I started experimenting and after trying several combos found that if I disabled both the wireless card AND the Webcam, suddenly the USB reader was recognized by ResScan!

At the end of the day...Success! Thanks a million...especially now that I don't have to bug the wife to use HER laptop any longer.

OMG What a joke. The most frustrating thing is it LOOKS like it's working. I am very competent with a computer and I nearly burst out laughing when the resmed tech told me to disable the wireless card - right up until it actually fixed the problem. It is so much easier using the card rather than the USB d/l.
