Poor Gasp...

Rooster, she's actually this Stunning Blonde. Blindingly beautiful, in fact. In fact, the more I think about her, the more I hate her....

No no... Pretty in a nice way. Very engaging smile and personality.

Now, don't get me wrong. Grandpa's a great guy. But I really see no reason for ME to be 95. I don't have grandkids and great-grandkids and great-great-grandkids. Ex-Step-Dogs do NOT count.

I think God intended us to expire. It works better for us, it works better for the planet. I don't plan to advocate widespread euthanasia (GW Bush does that so much better than I), I just find our tweaking with the natural life span of our bodies gross and unneccessary. Spend as long as I have caring for elderly bedridden family members and you might feel the same way.

Live today well, and you won't need to extend your lifespan unncecessarily trying to reach some "Retirement Nirvana" that does NOT exist.

Cheers,

I used to feel the same way. While their physical issues aren't easy to personally care for (I too have and do that), I'm constantly learning from their life experience. Have you ever felt about 10 years old when discussing the meaning of life and everything with a senior? Nothing better : )

I really feel for those who deal with the effects of Alzheimer's - they just wait for a glimmer of recognition or normalcy. That along with physical challenges is just too much for the person who has it and for their family to bear. I have also seen the effects of dehydration on the elderly. That with poor medication management can make an elderly person feeble instead of robust.

I sure hope all the baby boomers that are thinking about retiring right now open some really nice senior centers that serve organic food and have work out centers etc for all of us coming after : )

Congratulations Jen!!! I've missed you, but figured you were just working on something -- Well, I guess I was right!!!

One of the things we here at "Mijo's Place" (the name of the ranch) have decided to do as soon as we can clear some of the brush in the horse paddock is to raise our own steer.....The object being that we'll know exactly what went into it!!!! Mega cattle are raised on pumped up food full of all kinds of drugs that are really un necessary for every animal.
Chickens are also in the plan for the range eggs and range meat -- you farmers know, ain't nothing like a barnyard chicken!!! The chickens we get in the grocery stores have no flavor -- only what you cook 'em with/in....

Nothin' wrong with healthy Babs......but know what you mean!!!!!! Gotta have a pizza or a greasy burger once in a while......

cheers

No argument here that, for any one individual, things like free-range cattle and chicken can be healthier than mass-produced beef and chicken. But now comes the economic problem, if you look at our whole society, 300+ million people, how could we ever get them fed without mass-produced beef and chicken?

"Free range" is extremely land and labor intensive.

(Free-range chicken are better in bed too.)

Hey Rooster -- No argument!!!!
What we have in mind is not for everyone. I know people who have a whole lot more acreage than we do that wouldn't consider trying to raise their own food....too much effort....

It would be impossible for people in the "big city" to accomplish....even if the neighbors didn't protest (our paddock is downwind and so is the future location of the chickens).......and in the 'burbs, lot sizes aren't large enough to support sustenance "farming", let alone the CC&R's in a lot of places.
In our area, most of the grocery stores have some kind of free range eggs and chickens. If you're willing to pay 3x the price, there is even some "natural beef" available.

If more people would break down and purchase the "good stuff" perhaps the mega-farmers would get the hint -- though if too many did that, there would be a supply and demand issue because the "natural farmers" couldn't keep up with the demand. I'm afraid that, unfortunately, the days of the mom'n'pop farms are pretty much over -- there are a few out there, but they've only found a way to make a living, not really compete with the mega-farms.
The mega-farmers do what they need to do, and you are correct that without them and their methods there wouldn't be enough to go around, but I think we'd all agree that there has to be a better way....and though I am as guilty as anyone else, in our society we eat far too much meat for our good health!!!!

I know I'm in the minority, but I try to do what I can.......

cheers

Perhaps we are not suppose to be eatting so much meat, free-range or otherwise?

Oh yeah, I forgot … then the MickyD multinational profit machine wouldn’t be able to fatten the wall street investor wallets by fattening us up with BigMacs at all hours of the day and night.

Whoa, this thread certainly took a tangent from natural cleaning

Goose,

I am glad to see that you understand something about the economics of feeding this country.

Do you really think eating too much meat is hurting the general population?

I recently hear someone on C-Span say that 40% of the calories consumed in the U.S. come from sugars that have been added to foods and soft drinks. Consumption of corn syrup is huge and cane sugars follows closely. (Sugars occurring naturally in fruits, vegetables, fruit juices, grains and breads were not counted in the 40%.) The impact of this much added sugar must be many times more damaging than the meat consumed.

I feel little guilt when eating an occasional Big Mac, but if I take a large soda and a large fry and an apple turnover, I feel like the temple is being defiled.

We eat burgers about once a week at home. Depending on what the market has, I buy 90-93% lean and leave the white-bread buns and frozen fries on the store shelves. We will have a couple large servings of vegetables, maybe some whole wheat toast, and fruit for dessert. That type of burger meal I am convinced is healthy.

This 40% sugar deal has bugged the crap out of me since I heard it. What huge costs this must impose on our health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid taxes and worker productivity?

Hey Rooster -- again no argument.
When my kids were growing up sugar was referred to as "White Death"....My daughter has taught her kids the same.....It's very difficult to find any processed foods that don't have a lot of added sugar and salt...

My comment regarding meat actually refers to the difficulty in digestion. Pork is actually the most difficult thing we eat for the digestive system (I reallllllly like pork!!!). The fat content of most meats also leaves a lot to be desired (but without fat the stuff would be pretty tough and not too tasty).
The human digestive system is much more attuned to the nuts and berries our "ancestors" used to forage for until they tasted saber tooth tiger - raw by the way ....they didn't learn to cook it for a long time.....
Having had a sigmoid colectomy a couple years ago, I can attest to the need of fiber in the diet!!!! Can't get too much!!!!

That said, I'd have to agree that there's nothing better than a home cooked burger on the BBQ....One thing I learned on a naturopathic diet is that lettuce makes a good bun!!!! I kind of laughed at it, but godfrey daniels, it's not bad!!!!

I also have to admit to an occasional Mac attack myself, but after reading the book "Little America", I understand that it's the drug they put in the special sauce that keeps us coming back.....

Yeah -- we've wandered again......sorry Babs.....

cheers

Not a tangent, we're discussing natural cleaning of our colons. Or whatever it is you clean out when you A) quit eating meat, and/or B) choose better meat; i.e., organice, free range, etc. etc.

Eating local is a great way to cut down on your food choices (too many choices makes your life too hard, and lowers your quality of health), improve your food quality, and improve your health. It is also great for your local economy, and for improving the environment.

Now if only I could force myself to practice what I preach. You want to know just how sick I am? I worked for 3 years for a national nonprofit dedicated to preaching sustainable agricultural practices and convincing people to buy and eat local. Me and my boss ate nearly every lunch at the KFC next door...

And to tangent in ANOTHER direction, I just discovered the joys of the local carniceria. There's lots of tiny latin groceries in my neighborhood, but not knowing what I was looking for stopped me from shopping there. A coworker armed me with some knowledge, and sent me to her favorite one. I had a blast, came home with some interesting new exotic stuff, some old favorites, and a ton of food for not much money. The organic eggs were a real surprise. As was the pork something or other that looked too interesting to pass up in the butcher case. I fried it up this AM with some scrambled eggs and salsa and it was yummy! Must go back for more. Some sort of shredded raw pork with onions and spices and PINEAPPLE. Anyone know what that might be? The lovely butcher didn't speak much English. I might have to go back and write down what it was called and look it up online. Started with an "A" but NOT Adobo. Albonado? Don't know what it's for, but it's great with eggs and salsa!

LOL,
Babs

I have had that. In rural Mexican villages it is very popular and comes with local fruit. Only in Mexico City did I see it with pineapple and a different Spanish name on the menu.

In the villages it is very popular and is called ancephalo - pork brains.

It's not BRAINS. I know the diff. It's red when raw and white when cooked.

Unless I'm wrong, in which case, it was good and I'll still eat it.
