After 9 mos of problemless CPAP...burning sensation in nose

Post by JCraig » Tue May 22, 2007 4:56 am

I've been using CPAP since early August '06 with no problems at all. Now, all of a sudden, for about a week or so, I'll wake up with a burning sensation in my nose. Also, whatever's causing it is also causing me to have quite a bit of a runny nose. I'll use the restroom during which time the runny nose/burning sensation will start to fade quite a bit, then go back and fire the machine back up and be fine. O_o

Nothing's changed, same machine, same mask. It's bothering me because 2-3 nights since this has started happening, I've had "Large Leaks" showing up in the data, something I've NEVER had in 9 months of treatment...

What the heck could be the cause of this?

Just last week I got a little rain out for the first time. The temp in the house went down to 62. When I sucked the water up into my sinus it burned terribly. Could it be that you had some rainout that got sucked in? If you're getting some rainout it could also explain the leaks.

I suppose it's possible, but it seems unlikely since now winter is over and it's much, much warmer outside (and hence, inside). Our bedroom gets fairly chilly during winter due to crappy insulation.

So, yeah, I suppose it's possible but it doesn't seem likely and I haven't noticed it if it has happened. I had it happen sometimes during winter but it never really caused any issues.

To me it sounds like too little humidity, not too much. Do you have the A/C on yet? That could be making the air less humid. Have you checked your tank isn't empty? I get that feeling if my humidifier runs out of water.

I check the humidifier's tank daily, it usually runs 2-3 days before needing to be filled. I keep it supplied with water. I suppose I could try cranking it up a notch or 2. Wouldn't hurt, I suppose. Just seems odd this would happen all of a sudden after 9 totally problem-free months. :/

Hmmmm... Are you using distilled water? Are your filters clean? Started using any different cleaning products around the house, carpet shampoos etc? (Anything that may get sucked into the intake.)

Just fishing, but maybe somebody will come up with the answer.

YES, using distilled water only, as always, as the instructions caution a million times. No new cleaning products, filter is clean.

Every time I've had a burning sensation on CPAP it's been due to too little humidity....

Will have to try cranking it up then! If anyone else has ideas/etc, let me know, though!

Same here, this is the time of the year I have to make sure that I flush out my sines almost every day and turn up the H/H to a setting of 3, sometimes 4 an my REMstar M series auto with C-Flex H/H. If I don't I get the same burning sensation and sometimes a little bloody discharge, so I make sure I have plenty of humidity in the spring and summer, HTH.

My first thought was the same. NOT ENOUGH HUMIDITY. I know when I ran into that it was like a raw streak up the inside of my nose that someone poured salt on! I had to go two nights w/o CPAP and even then could NOT use my nasal pillows, I had to resort to the nasal cushion. As it turned out once I tried the ComfortLite 2 simple nasal cushion I've never had any desire to go back to a nasal pillow. I'm now using the Simplicity Petite.

I'm resurrecting this post because the problem mentioned never really went away. It got better most days, and I'd almost forgotten about it for a while, but it's now certainly a problem and I've got to figure out what the deal is.

It's only on my right side, but it basically feels like I need to sneeze constantly, and some days I get pretty congested to boot. It's not every day. I run the integrated HH on full (5)... Is it simply too weak to provide enough humidity or is this something else entirely?

I have the same problem of irratated nose, my Dr prescribed
Ipratropium Bromide Nasal Solution 0.06% made by Bausch& Lomb. Two puffs in the evening going to bed, and two puffs in the morning, works fine when I need it, doesn't cure the problem, just rids the symptoms. By the way I never had this problem before cpap, I also tried extra humidity, clean filters, etc. good luck finding a cure, some say non nasal pillow masks are better, less intrusive.

Hi,

Have you had the inside of your nose looked at lately? Maybe an ENT can tell by looking if it's allergy, or whatever. My ENT told me to put a little antibiotic ointment up in there to coat it for a couple of days, seemed to help somewhat.

Mine turned out to be simply dryness. Anyway to increase your water (drinking more, room humidifier). I've also found Ponaris Oil helpful.

If you've tried all this already, which you probably have by now, I'd get it looked at.

Best of luck. I know that must be frustrating when it sounds like you've been adjusting otherwise.

Gail
