Noise levels
When I started this therapy, I first had a REMStar Pro 2 with C-Flex. I thought is must surely be defective because of, what I felt was, the excessive noise level. I complained..............no, actually I bitched and moaned and called the machine every name imaginable, and some not so! Either the machine "settled in" and got quieter over time, or I just got used to it...........don't really know which. (my girlfriend mentioned it seemed to her to get quieter as time went by also, though) Then about a month ago, I changed to a REMStar Auto PAP with C-Flex. The noise level on this thing puts the other to shame! Has anyone else experienced this? Any of you REMStar Auto users care to share your experiences?

In my short experience, these things seem to be noisier when you're using the C-Flex. I tried not using is, and although it was quieter, I couldn't stand it w/o the C-Flex turned on!
Someone on a post somewhere (great memory, huh?) had taken a large styrofoam cooler, turned it upside down and put it over the machine, leaving holes for the hose and air vent, of course. They said it worked well in reducing the noise. I've never tried it, so I personally don't know if it helps, but it might be worth a try!

Hmmmmmm! Plastic cooler. Never would have thought of that. I'm stuck with C-Flex though. I was suffering terribly from Aerophagia until I got this Auto and then started using C-Flex set at 3. Solved the problem.
Thanks for the tip. Might just try it tonight.

have you tried earplugs?
I have discovered earplugs that are very gentle and very effective. (sorry I don't remember the brand, I bought a whole box of them online somewhere). I became addicted to using them when I am flying. I travel a lot for my work, fly commercial, military (as a passenger), and I also pilot small planes (VERY noisy, yes). And then I started using them at home when I sleep with the Remstar AUTO, which makes a little noise, I admit.
The problem becomes when the alarm goes off and I don't hear it. So hubby has to wake me up and then maybe he goes back to bed to wait for his alarm clock. But that's a different kind of problem. Or if he gets up and goes to work before my alarm goes off, then I have a REAL problem. I think if my APAP used a gas powered lawn mower engine, I still would not hear it. Well maybe.
I will edit this post when I can remember what brand they are and where I bought them, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the tip, but I can't wear ear-plugs. Can't wear my hearing aids either. Causes a moisture build up in my ears and I get a fungal infection. Comes in handy though. When people submit a post I don't want to respond to all I have to do is tell them I can't hear them.

Chris,
If you happen to know a carpenter (ahem... )....you could have him build a wooden box to put the machine in. I think it was "Oldgearhead" that put his in a nightstand drawer.
I imagine the inside could be lined with additional deadening material if it's still too noisy.

I just tried Pam's suggestion. Got my latest Omaha Steaks cooler and cut the back end out of it. Stuck my machine in it.............put on the mask and gave it a try. Not sure, but I think I could now hear a gnat fart over the sound of the machine. (can I say that?)

Just a follow up to thank Pam.
The styrofoam cooler idea worked great...............now how do I sleep with all these gnats farting all night?

I like that. I've learned to use "I can hear ants tip toeing over the grass blades across the street."
I slept through a 3 alarm fire, once.
Another time I was awakened to the noise of someone saying, "Your apartment is on fire" to my neighbor. Worst part was they had been getting people out of the building for several minutes, but no one bothered called the fire department. I took the initiative. Fortunately, all I suffered was some smoke damage.
Sometimes I can sleep through anything, other times a gnat fart will wake me up wide awake.

Sleepy-eyes, you're welcome--so glad it worked!
I'll think about that gnat problem of yours and let you know.

Some of the suggestions here reminded me of postings from a Finnish user. Check out the photos of what he made:

Unfortunately, he didn't think that this helped. IMHO, he had a defective machine or was making himself hypersensitive to the sound.
