Orange stuff in hose and mouth after use
Re: Orange stuff in hose and mouth after use
Ozone will/can prematurely age silicone...cause it to turn yellow or orange looking.
Pretty much all silicone (hoses, masks, gaskets) will turn yellow with age....ozone just makes it do that turning faster and I have heard some people say it makes things more brittle.
Doesn't matter if it is a S9 model or AirSense model or Respironics model either.
Your complaint of the discoloring transferring to your mouth though.....that's the first I have heard of that.
I did hear from one person who repairs cpap machines for a living and was told that ozone seemed to cause a break down in the foam insulation within the blower and that foam got blown into the humidifier tank and was floating in the water. If I remember right the foam was also yellow/orange in color.
Sinus issues with cpap use are common and most of the time related to the humidity being used. Google cpap rhinitis and start reading.
It's not necessarily from some sort of bug that the SoClean is supposed to kill. Usually a person just needs either more humidity or less humidity and the sinus issues will go away without bug killing...because it's not the bugs causing the sinus issues.
If you must nuke the germs/bugs that you transfer to your cpap machine and equipment (those are your germs you know and you contaminate your equipment with them every time you touch it)....maybe look at something that uses UV light instead of ozone.

Re: Orange stuff in hose and mouth after use
The SoClean cleaner they are sending you is likely their "Neutralizing Pre-wash". All it is is dye-free, fragrance-free soap. Basically the same as Seventh Generation Dishsoap. Except SoClean's is watered down and they change you 100s of times more per use than dish soap.
Ozone is a toxic gas that causes harm. The SoClean does not contain the ozone to the unit, it pollutes the environment.I have stopped using the Soclean and see what happens and going to replace the hose and mask. It is concerning since I am having sinus and breathing problems at times now but not sure it is related.
Here is the FDA'a position on Ozone:
https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/ ... fr=801.415
FDA wrote:(a) Ozone is a toxic gas with no known useful medical application in specific, adjunctive, or preventive therapy. In order for ozone to be effective as a germicide, it must be present in a concentration far greater than that which can be safely tolerated by man and animals.
You misunderstood or the rep lied to you. They did say that thay have a warranty on the Socklean that will replace my CPAP if the Soclean damages it by using this. It is good for 2 years so Im within that right now. Very strange. They said they have not seen this at all or heard of it happening before. My CPAP has been discontinued so wonder if there was an issue with that one from the start.
The warranty coverage SoClean is claiming is for CPAPs still under warranty (plus a year), it is not a replacement for CPAPs for the first two years since buying the SoClean.
SoClean will not be replacing any non-manufacturer warrantied machines.

Re: Orange stuff in hose and mouth after use
I recently have orange colored stain inside my pillow cushion and the tube attached to it. I've never used SoClean, so I don't believe it's due to ozone breakdown. I have used a UV wand to sanitize my tubes before. The orange discoloration happened to all 3 sets that I packed together, dried and sealed in an air tight plastic bag and put inside my luggage. My luggage got lost by American Airlines. 3 days later, it arrived. That's when I discovered the dicoloration. (Background- in Virginia, the humidity is high, so I had to rotate among several my CPAP headsets to allow longer drying time after each daily clean. I flew from VA to CA.)
I think the orange discoloration is from airborne contaminant in my room that got a chance multiply and baked in by the summer heat while my luggage was being located and shipped back to me. I tried using them as is for a couple of days and had no sickness. But I've decided to toss them all out including the long air hose, just to be safe, since I can't wash it out.

Re: Orange stuff in hose and mouth after use
Much like SoClean, the UV wand could very well damage the tubes. The UV is definitely not strong enough to sanitize anything though. If it were, it would be regulated as dangerous.
I am in Central Virginia humidity and have never had that happen over the years.
There is a reason warranties may be voided by using UV products. Live and learn.

Disclaimer first, I'm new to cpap and have not yet seen the results of long term use of the tubes and silicone pillows/seals.Retiree Joe wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 1:52 pmI recently have orange colored stain inside my pillow cushion and the tube attached to it. But, we have a terrible amount of minerals (limestone and iron) in our well water. Anything that spends much time in our water or gets washed or sprayed will turn yellow/orange. The new shower pan just installed 2 weeks or so ago is already turning orange. I ran our of distilled water one night for dad's machine and I just used tap water in it, and I had to wash the tank with vinegar the next morning because of the gritty orange mineral build up in the tank/dregs of the water.
Those pictures you posted Retiree Joe look a lot like anything here that holds water all the time (the inside of the tops of our britta filters are orange.) But that one that is just a bit yellow just looks kinda old to me.
Original Poster,
How old is the mask and tubing? Are you using distilled water in the humidity tank? When you do wash your stuff, do you add some vinegar into the soapy water?
As to disinfecting things, I think plain old soap and water are probably generally best still. And anything that needs a bit more or if seeing minerals build up, add a bit of vinegar. If I have the urge to KILL bugs, on something I might use some H2O2 but keep in mine that oxidizes things which can break things down faster too, just like the Ozone or UV. Also keep in mind that using Ozone or UV to kill things doesn't actually wash them off of or out of the tubing and mask, the essence of the dirt is still there, it has just been killed so it is no longer living but the physical thing is still in the tubes or on the mask and could still provide a sub straight for the next generation of stuff to grow on. I suppose eventually it could grow thick enough to blow free of the walls of the tubing and wind up elsewhere. (I know, gross.) So you want to at least be rinsing out all the tubes weekly.
Also, my understanding of why you wash your pillows every day is that anything actually touching your skin can build up oils that over time will change the silicone and make it less flexible and able to seal properly so you definitely want to wash the part that touches your face every day (it isn't about germs, it is about keeping the silicone flexible.)

Why should the providers be blamed? I didn't see anything about the providers suggesting the use of SoClean, did you?chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 11:08 amSoclean and an escape?

Our well water here has lime too. Perhaps that is why the manufacturer says to use distilled water in the CPAP humidifier. They also say to only wash with soap and water. The hose should not have condensed water in it anyway. After cleaning, the manufacturer also says to thoroughly dry the components.
The tone of your post appears to be guessing. I recommend reviewing the manufacturer’s instructions on usage and cleaning of CPAP.

Re: Orange stuff in hose and mouth after use
Could it be that red bacteria?
It is something that grows in moist areas. Can be difficult to remove and from what I have read, is generally considered to be harmless.
If it is, Vinegar/water or Hydrogen Peroxide should be able to remove it until the next time.
