or a pager?
Hey, pagers were great, and they'd keep beeping until I woke up and took care of whatever when I was on call... unlike, well, you know, pocket computers that don't have the 'reminder beep' feature, at least none of mine have, like my old flip phone, and pager.

now mind you, i've never had a pager my own self. and this just may be am urban legend or what-have-you.

BUT i heard that people working in hospitals held on to those pagers because they were designed to work through walls with better signal than cell phones.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Oh yeah, pagers would work where phones never would.

deserve all the honking you get
Lately I've been disrupting local traffic by having the sheer audacity to drive the speed limit without going over it on deer-laden two-lane mountain roads. The cars with Jersey plates usually just pass me by heading directly into oncoming traffic despite the double yellow line. Times is rough out there.
I've heard about them Jersey drives, all the way down to Texas.

Lucky me. I come here for the entertainment value so I don't normally have to log on -

And even when logged ON and I refresh the page -
that top portion of the home page is not visible.

I see NO Reason to stay here and stay Logged IN/Logged ON
ALL DAY

that would be as the title suggests
-a colossal waste of time!
But hey thats MY Secret.

Stay Healthy

Notification only appear when you log on.
If you browse ALL Day long without logging on, you don't see them.
not true. see my own response to sleepgeek.

"Notifications"
not messages.
i think we may be talking past one another here. i can read that three word sentence and understand each word. however, taken together, they don't make sense. let me try again as i'm sure the fault is mine.

OH WAIT!!!! i just got it. of course, if one comes by just to read messages (though why a forum memeber would do that is beyond me.) you won't see notifications. none.

i've been logged in now for two years. i logged out when the forum wasn't playing well with the internet and a few of us couldn't connect. i logged out and tried to log back in but it didn't clear up the problem. dog slobber explained what was going on and i understood it at the time. but i put that in my "short term memory" not "long term" so i've since forgotten.

so yes, of course one has to be logged in. thanks for that!

when you click that singular icon, does it then divide out the pm's from the others?
Is this the question you were asking me? (I couldn't find anything else)

I assume that you are referring to this:
https://imgur.com/a/o7jyeRW

When you touch (not click) the bell icon that will open a dropdown window that are just your notifications for PUBLIC activity.

If you touch the little box to the right (maybe a stylized in/out box) that will open the User Control Panel and the Private Messages Tab, from there you may or may not have to touch "INBOX" to see private messages displayed at the bottom of the screen (and may have to swipe upwards to find the most recent PM sent to you). And you will NOT see PUBLIC messages or notifications there.

Is this what you were asking?

BTW, the screenshot (above) is if the iphone is in the portrait mode, if you rotate the phone to the landscape mode, the words "Private Message" will appear beside the icon. Apparently the HTML code deletes the words "Private Messages" as a function of screen size.

Since I don't know what equipment a newbie poster might be using to access the website, or if they had email notifications turned on or not, or even knew that there was a private messaging function on Cpaptalk forum, that the reasonable action was to let them know that there was a private message waiting for them.

yes, it is. thank you. and i must say it seems to me to be an overly complicated process. but there's a whole swath of folk out there for whom a smartphone IS a computer.

i use a smartphone myself, but never for logging onto the internet or facebook or the like.

and what you've clarifies the WHY of what you do.

thanks for the information!

ALL DAY
i (and others) don't stay here all day. places to go, people to see, things to do. but i do stay logged in all day. and for me it's just more practical than logging in and out and back in.

as i stated elsewhere, the last time i logged in was two years ago. trust me, i haven't sat in front of the computer for all that time.

when i've finished my session with cpaptalk.com, i open a new fresh tab, then close the cpaptalk tab. and i either shut off my monitor and go do irl things or go to another of the forums i frequent. when i'm ready later for more cpaptalk, i open a fresh tab and navigate here. voila! if i have a notification, it pops up. i see the new messages because of the other notification that appears at the side of new content in older messages or new topics that have been stated while i was gone.

hope this helps clarify.

Hmph. That's a design issue. Our custom phone app plays the StarTrek Original Series Red Alert tone to page techs, then plays it again louder if they don't acknowledge, then plays it again, then sends a text, then makes an automated phone call, then does all the same to the tech's boss, then the VP of operations. It overrides Do Not Disturb and Silent mode.

We don't have issues with missed dispatches. Pagers were fun, apps are better.

Well, I mean, *technically* a smartphone IS a "pocket computer".

My understanding is that when we all get our soon-to-come "A.I.-phones," most of our posts and replies to cpaptalk will be made completely without us! Now THAT'S progress!!!

(Please don't tell Jeff I just generated and sent this.)
