elderly gentleman who lives in the basement
Had to fire him. Robin found him creepy.

And just for the record, as for the original topic: I once had a pet peeve myself, but I eventually had to have him put down.

Oh wait. I'm not here.

Notification only appear when you log on.
If you browse ALL Day long without logging on, you don't see them.
not true. see my own response to sleepgeek.

"Notifications"
not messages.
i think we may be talking past one another here. i can read that three word sentence and understand each word. however, taken together, they don't make sense. let me try again as i'm sure the fault is mine.

OH WAIT!!!! i just got it. of course, if one comes by just to read messages (though why a forum memeber would do that is beyond me.) you won't see notifications. none.

i've been logged in now for two years. i logged out when the forum wasn't playing well with the internet and a few of us couldn't connect. i logged out and tried to log back in but it didn't clear up the problem. dog slobber explained what was going on and i understood it at the time. but i put that in my "short term memory" not "long term" so i've since forgotten.

so yes, of course one has to be logged in. thanks for that!

Finally, I'd like to point out (in defense of my sugggestion that newbies may not even be aware of a Private Message function) that when I login on my phone, there is no text in the upper right that looks like what the OP posted (that says "Personal Messages' with a counter). Now it might just be that is peculiar to my iphone, or some other HTML function, but the only "thing" that is there is an icon with no label.

https://imgur.com/a/o7jyeRW

huh! i did not know that. i resist using a phone on the internet, not because i'm a luddite or a very slow adapter. no it's because of my poor if corrected vision. i don't like the tiny screens and even enlarging the text isn' a solution for me, it just brings more problems. so i stay on my laptop which is hooked to a monitor. so i wasn't aware that the lay out you were seeing is different.

when you click that singular icon, does it then divide out the pm's from the others?

as to villain, others have addressed this before and you haven't taken any of it to heart. rather than a villain i think of you as a disingenuous troll.

you couldn't help but make it about you in your reply to me.

How DARE YOU!??!?!?!

I'm a systems administrator, we complain about software 'designers' as much or more than anyone else :D

Though I have been throwing together a few web pages for an organization I'm working with lately, not at all my strong suit though.

I too turned off email notifications, I don't need the forum pestering me like a needy child "hey, come back, you've got a message from someone who you don't care what they say anyway! WHIIINE!!" I wander by when I want to, when there aren't more important things sucking up my time :)
well now, here's the thing. once dog slobber revealed that this is kept under "board preferences" i went there to check my own. i HAVE email notifications turned on yet i don't receive them! they aren't in my main folder nor in my junk folder. i looked because this thread has generated so much directed at me and quoting me, i was sure it would be there.

nope!

WAY WAY much ado over nothing.

Hundreds, maybe a thousand words spilt over a couple of very short (ten or so words) innocuous public posts that caused no harm.

Talk about a colossal waste of time indeed.
and yet, you took time out of your day to let us know. and twice even!

yes, it's prolly a waste of time, me trying to figure answers and add to my knowledge base.

I'm hoping he'll have to tell me in a thread how and when to check my PMs and then I can play dense.
You could set a daily reminder on your phone to check your email for notifications about PM's from cpaptalk.com. Or maybe a fax.
surely we can add an intercom to this chain?

or a pager?

Sometimes now, since the pandemic, just for fun, I'll pause for a quarter of a second after a traffic light turns green, just so I can hear the validation of all the car horns blowing impatiently behind me.
You know, if it looks like you've got your head up and you're checking to see if cross traffic is actually stopping, and not going to T-bone you in the intersection, that's fine, if you've got your head buried in your phone, obsessively checking cpaptalk to see if someone has validated your existence, then you deserve all the honking you get, asshole. (If, of course, that's what you were doing).

Or I'll meander slowly and aimlessly through the middle of the aisles of a nearby Walmart with a cart to get some attention and interaction that way. Occasionally I simply need that kind of immediate public affirmation.
Well, what happens far too often in Costco is some self absorbed, entitled twit parks their basket on one side of the (admittedly very wide aisle) and then goes to stand, staring confusedly, at something on the *other* side of the aisle, (but of course not up close to the racks of stuff) thereby blocking the entire aisle.

not so.

i merely described the reason why i started this thread. i didn't feel right starting it in the thread i mentioned.

topic is still private messages with a side slip into notifications.

care to answer my question i asked re: accessing the forum with a smartphone?

Hey, pagers were great, and they'd keep beeping until I woke up and took care of whatever when I was on call... unlike, well, you know, pocket computers that don't have the 'reminder beep' feature, at least none of mine have, like my old flip phone, and pager.

Did you ever consider that if you weren't such an odious presence on the forum, people wouldn't "call you out" for being that way?

Lately I've been disrupting local traffic by having the sheer audacity to drive the speed limit without going over it on deer-laden two-lane mountain roads. The cars with Jersey plates usually just pass me by heading directly into oncoming traffic despite the double yellow line. Times is rough out there.

If they ever do that here in the forum, Pugsy should lock their carts.
