am i the only one who sees these notifications when they log in?
No. Your aren't the only one. That's what I see plus I get notifications for all the new account posts like spammers and those you never see. They don't make it to the light of day....and they get their account blocked from posting again.

BTW the notification thing....by default the settings are for notifications to be on . Someone has to change it to turn it off to not get the notifications.
Now a newbie might not know what it means but they will quickly learn.
THANK you. now about turning off notifications, i couldn't find how to do that. i wanted to be able to see if'n i could, but i didn't see anything in my brief look around.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

To set notification preferences:
User Control Panel / Board Preferences / Edit Notification Options

Then check if you want a notification or email. At the bottom is Someone sends you a message, By default Notifications are checked.

I've never understood this silly custom, where one posts in a topic that they have sent another a message. And this justification that because novices are new and therefore need help figuring out that they even have a PM, is even sillier.

I understand what you're saying and generally agree with your position. However, I often have to remind myself that the average age of posters on this forum is higher than, say, the motorcycle or aerobatics or scuba diving forums where I participate. It makes a difference. When I send my dad an email, if I don't call and tell him he won't remember to open it. A lot of posters here can't figure out apps or installing software or quoting posts, so calling out to check their PM's might make sense in that context. I feel bad for them, as some tend to walk away after one or two unsuccessful attempts to do something like installing OSCAR.

I see nothing in the user agreement that says I can't be annoying.

I feel bad for them too because I want to save the world....but I can't save them all. Very hard lesson for me to learn in life.

My own personal thoughts....if a person can't understand how to check emails or PMs or install software and either can't or won't learn....I don't think they have any business messing with their machines and they need to have in depth discussion with their medical care team. It's not rocket science but it does take a bit of skill and a lot of "work".

Repeatedly telling someone "you got a PM" within the same thread...spoon feeding and people need to learn to feed themselves and not be spoon fed all the time.
Plus it is highly annoying to most of us.

I think the Internet is annoying.

But I keep my PM notifications on here just so Zonker can quickly, easily, and conveniently give me a hard time any time he chooses to do so.

There is no reason to use or read the email notifications if someone will just look up in the right corner for the notifications when it comes to private messages.

I turned off email notifications years and years ago.

Notifications only appear when you log on.
If you browse ALL Day long without logging on, you don't see them.

with all due respect to software designers (hi, palerider!) why on EARTH would they put this function in "Board Preferences"?

unless my definition of preferences is too narrow?

any who, thanks for that. it gives me some more info as i went to look at the choices.

There is enough garbage already on our email.
I prefer to be texted--way less traffic on there.

i can see where you are coming from. myself, i'm 69 and i don't know where i stand amongst the "average age" here. i too go to other forums with different software. so i know that while the purposes across forum software is similar, they all go about the processes in a radically different manner.

but i still have faith that people without regard to their age can learn new things. it's something that keeps us young and our brains functional.

but thanks for the input. it reminds me that i need to be more like our miss e. and ozij in practicing more patience.
