My Sleep Study Update

Post by Sanjay1976 » Thu Jun 16, 2022 2:55 pm

Hello all,
I share with you today my Pulmongy office called to schedule an office visit. While talking with the nurse I asked if it made any difference if I was breathing through my mouth, she said I should talk to the doctor, but would put me through to the nurse practitioner. So I spoke to the practitioner. He most was apologizing and said I could have another sleep study and they would provide a thing (strap?) that would keep my mouth shut.
He was very kind and said that they would not charge insurance for the second sleep study because it was their fault.

So I'm off to get the equipment to do another sleep study. I am happy.

Thank you all for your help
Sanjay

That's stupid. You should just get an oro-nasal cannula.

Freeze this moment a little bit longer.
Make each sensation a little bit stronger.
Experience slips away.

And that's assuming there was even an issue with the first study. The nasal cannula is accurate even in supposed "mouth breathers". The only time there's an issue is if there's nasal obstruction.

Did he not tell you the results of the first study??

BTW, why did you seek the first study?

Yep. Chinstraps are notorious for failure. The user is still able to open his mouth and at the very least open the lips to let air flow through.

And I'm happy that Sanjay is going to get another sleep study, one that takes into account his tendency to mouth breathe.
Apparently his doctor thinks that accounting for all flow is important (however that is accomplished).

BTW, does the Resmed Apnea Air link come supplied with an oro-nasal cannula? That would be so convenient/comfortable.

Can you get the results from both studies when they're done?

I'll ask. do you need to compare them?

To ChicagoGrannie:
Actually I not seeking the sleep study.
My general Dr sent me to a heart Dr for palpitions. The heart Dr wanted me to have a sleep study before a stressing test. The heart Dr sent me to a pulmanory Dr. The pulmanory Dr send me to another DR. office for sleep study equipment.
I try to be a good patient - do what drs say -but I don't know why. I think I sleep just fine. Not sleepy, fatigued, or the other things people here talkabout.

Thank you all for asking and helping me understand about this cpap stuff.

That's good to hear.

You reported in the other thread that you breathe through your mouth when sleeping. That concerns me because it is a sign of sleep apnea. (It's also a sign of blocked nasal passages.)

Yes, it would be interesting to some of the forum members.

Sanjay only reported speaking to a nurse practitioner.

VVV, you pulled a quote from 16 years ago about extracting CSV formatted data from Encore data credit card?

Yes, Nurse Practitioner (one who licensed to write orders and works under the direct supervision of a physician), You are correct - NP not Dr. My bad

To the people in the thread-turned-nasty (viewtopic/t184495/Sleep-study-inaccurate.html) who claimed the first study would not be accurate due to an open mouth, here are the results of both studies.
Someone asked what the results of the studys were:
First Study (with mouth open
OAI 1.4
Hi 11.3
CAI 0.15
O2 93

Repeat (moth closed)
OAI 0.9
Hi 2.2
CAI 0.2
O2 94

You can see the first study with the mouth open recorded more events than the second study with the mouth closed. This is to be expected because the mandible naturally moves slightly backward when the mouth opens. This backward movement tends to crimp the airway and impede airflow.

The ResMed ApneaLink Air device has a good record of identifying sleep-breathing issues whether the mouth is open or closed.
