S9 replacement time
Hello All,
Well it’s time to replace my 8 year old S9 auto, still in good working order but have an alert that the motor is past running life time. I purchased this machine with the knowledge I had received reading postings by other members and it has been a very good result. I have read articles about the S10 for her, as having the best option settings. If possible to obtain may be the best machine at this time for CPAP / APAP treatment. My provider has suggested that the best machine and newest machine is the Dreamstation. I have done a week testing of the Dreastation to compare it to my S9. Thanks to OSCAR, I can view my results and compare both how I feel and what the machine is registering. The reporting is different and has a few more reports like, VS/VS2, but otherwise my AHI numbers are about the same.
The first night was a disaster, new machine and new mask was equal to very little sleep. I thought I would try the new mask for another night as maybe it was just an adjustment I needed. The mask was nose cushion, but every time my face came close to the pillow the cushion would shift and leak. I have always used the swift FX nose pillows mask, so I changed it midway into the second night. Oh what a relief I was able to get about 5 hrs of sleep, no air flow noise and no leaks around the mask. The next few nights were better as well, very little air flow noise from the mask and about 7 hrs of uninterrupted sleep. using the swift FX pillows.
I do hear a hum from the Dreamstation which changes with the pulse of the motor from inhaling and exhaling, which was not present with the S9. My provider seems to think the Dreamstaion is a newer machine with better software and reporting wireless system. The wireless reporting is not important to me, as I have always been 100% compliant and use OCAR to evaluate my sleeping. The most important factor for me is, which machine is best for my apnea control and has the most options to asset my sleep to that end. My old S9 had better options for humidity control and I could access them within the patient options. I would like to hear some feedback on other member’s knowledge of these two machines, as to help me make a better informed decision on which one to purchase.
Again thank you all for your time and support in helping me get and stay healthy.

Which Dreamstation?Canadianguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 7:33 amMy provider has suggested that the best machine and newest machine is the Dreamstation.
There are a few models.
You are in Ontario, therefore you probably qualify for OHIP-ADP support.
The requirements to qualify for an Auto machine are much greater than straight CPAP. If only qualify for CPAP, none of the supported Dreamstations are Autos. However, the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her qualifies as a CPAP device.
Here is the list of OHIP-ADP supported machines:
http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/prog ... manual.pdf
You have had great success with the ResMed. Why would you change?
Amongst those that have used both the ResMed and Respironics there appears to be a huge preference for ResMed.

Dog Slobber,
Sorry I should have said, its a Dreamstation Auto, a replacement for the S9 Auto.
I agree with your suggestion why change from Resmed to Respironics, its the provider that is suggesting the Deamstation Auto is the better of the 2.

Re: S9 replacement time
Around here the preference seems to be heavily favoured towards ResMed AS 10 AS for Her, closely followed by ResMed AS 10 AS. Respironics being a distance third. The for Her model is the slight favourite because it has an extra optional mode, this advantage isn't huge because the for Her algorithm really isn't used much.
Dreamstation reports VS/VS2 as flagged events, ResMed as snore trace graphs. Add to that VS2 is not well understood, and appears as a bunch of clutter.
ResMed algorithm (around here) is considered the preferable algorithm, perhaps the only complaint might be ResMed is too aggressive. This can be mitigated by using the Soft Response.
ResMed is quieter, by published decibels.
ResMed has a smaller foot print.
You are familiar and happy with your existing ResMed.
ResMed has a larger humidifier tank.
The only real advantages of the DreamStation over AirSense is power consumption and cost of DC cable. This being important if portability with battery is important to you.
The DreamStation Auto was released in 2015, the Airsense in 2014. A one year difference on a six year old device is not really a huge technology leap.Canadianguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 7:33 amMy provider has suggested that the best machine and newest machine is the Dreamstation.
Not really.Canadianguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 7:33 amThe reporting is different and has a few more reports like, VS/VS2

I'm guessing he didn't say why the DreamStation is better. Sounds to me like he has a better profit margin.Canadianguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 8:21 amits the provider that is suggesting the Deamstation Auto is the better of the 2.

Re: S9 replacement time
Thanks for the replies everyone,
I was leaning to the AirSense 10 Auto for her before the supplier tried to convince me otherwise. The arguments presented where the ResMed AirSense 10 Auto is an older model, where as the Respironics Dreamstation Auto was a newer model with better software and hardware.
I now find from Dog Slobber that the actual difference is 1 year. I knew this forum would once again educate me to the facts that are really important.
Once again thank you kindly for taking the time to reply and helping to keep others healthy and informed.

Re: S9 replacement time
OMG....too funny...be careful Zonker of what you ask for....because if you aren't clear then what you get may not be just want you were wanting.
Good job DS.
Oh BTW to the OP....lean even more to the ResMed for Her. You won't regret it.
The main reason that these supply places push the Respironics....it's because they got a better wholesale price contract with them this year and the profit margin is better. They probably also will push Respironics masks when they can for the same reason.
Good job DS.

to the op: yeah, i'm with pugsy. i actually got BETTER treatment, in my estimation, once i let go of my resperonics and went with the resmed "for her". it's a more subtle algorithm as near as my experience can tell.

Re: S9 replacement time
I'll jump on this train. My prior 2 machines were respironics units. My current machine is a resmed autoset 10. I thought I ordered the for her model but I screwed up ... my bad. Anyway, I sleep much better and seem to need less pressure overall to get great results.
IMO, that's the way to go

Sleep loss is a terrible thing. People get grumpy, short-tempered, etc. That happens here even among the generally friendly. Try not to take it personally.
Re: S9 replacement time
Your provider is wrong, and might be making money on the deal. For every 100 people that have tried both machines, I think I've seen one that prefers the dreamstation.Canadianguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 7:33 amMy provider has suggested that the best machine and newest machine is the Dreamstation.
Yes, that's how Respironics machines are, some people can't hear it, it annoyed me enough that I got rid of mine and get another Resmed.Canadianguy wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 7:33 amI do hear a hum from the Dreamstation which changes with the pulse of the motor from inhaling and exhaling, which was not present with the S9.

The Air10 line from Resmed all have built in cell modems, they're quieter, they collect more detailed data, and most importantly, they treat apnea better.
