Its an old rumor "But by far the most famous story of missed fame and fortune is that of Gary Kildall. A pioneer in computer operating systems, Kildall wrote Control Program for Microcomputers (CP/M), the operating system used on many of the early hobbyist personal computers, such as the MITS Altair 8800, the IMSAI 8080, and the Osborne 1, before IBM introduced its own machine, the PC. Kildall could have virtually owned the personal computer operating system business, had he sold that system to IBM. He didn’t. Why is a matter of speculation, mundane gossip, and urban legend. We’ll get to that.Lucyhere wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 9:30 pm

The man is a genius no doubt, but are his motives altruistic or? I just don't know what to make about this whole mess!jnk... wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 10:59 pmMy point, and I think I may have actually had one this time, was that just as Gates (whatever else he did or did not do or invent or understand) recognized the importance of operating systems and licensing, at a time when larger companies did not, and then DID something about it to the later embarrassment and demise of larger companies, Gates now understands the importance of funding meaningful medical testing at a time when some in government appear not to see the underlying point of what is going on all around them and under their very noses. History tends to notice that sort of thing, especially in matters of life and death on a large scale.
Didn't mean to riddle. Meant to be pointed and exact. My bad.
Rome burns as some reach for a fiddle. Oops. Sorry.

Success can feel empty without a useful cause to work for and to feel proud of. I assume his motives are not completely selfish. Respect for the life of others can be considered it's own reward. Trite but true.babydinosnoreless wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 11:18 pmThe man is a genius no doubt, but are his motives altruistic or?
Make a difference by not adding to the mess while being a good neighbor in as responsible a way as you possibly can be right now. Any other choice would be a choice to be alone and lonely, no matter how smart or successful or charismatic we might otherwise be. It's the only way to make friends with the mirror at end of day.babydinosnoreless wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 11:18 pmI just don't know what to make about this whole mess!

Bill Gates at Microsoft, however, did sell an operating system to IBM—and reaped then-unimaginable rewards. A cloud of speculation has hung over that part of the story as well. The big question: Was the operating system Gates sold to IBM his to sell? Or was a key part of it stolen from Kildall?"

baby! i'm impressed. i tried looking up such info but my google-fu is weak.
yup, this is the story i was referencing. my journey into computers started in 1983. as a hobbyist, i (and several co-hobbyist) HATED microsoft and everything they were doing. we held that grudge far longer than i care to admit.
but, boy...if you had told 30 year old me that i'd be typing on a computer that ran on microsoft software someday?
YIKES!!
