Sadly, the "media" is less motivated to disseminate information than to
score advertising revenue and aggrandize themselves for awards and promotions.
I was encouraged to enter the field--but I know I could have not been a party
to the corrupt practices common in that industry
If it
BLEEDS, it
LEADS!
That's been news outlet's motto for most of recorded history.

reason *NOT* to buy masks
If you aren't used to wearing one and don't know proper on and off procedures, then your putting the mask on, fiddling with it to maintain the seal, and taking the mask off all just add to the number of times you have your fingers in proximity of your face--thereby
increasing your chances of exposure to viruses.

I think the media's approach tends to raise the stress level without imparting much useful information. But it is difficult for them to be informative and calming at the same time when ratings come from the opposite.
My approach in my personal life is to go out of my way to talk to the people around me who have a terrified/blank look on their face right now. They
need to talk about what they're feeling. Being a listening ear for them is help enough, something constructive to do, and it helps distracts me from any of my personal worries as a diabetic with high blood pressure and a lung condition or two.
I try to file the present situation under "opportunity to cooperate and be responsible" in this stressful situation. The authorities, both medical and governmental, are between a rock and a hard place. So if I can do something constructive by figuring out how best to cooperate with what they are trying to do by focusing on my small sphere and not worrying too much about the larger sphere they operate in, I'm good with that. The situation has already disrupted my life in some ways because my work location often involves person-to-person interactions with international travelers, and some of that has already been seriously curtailed, in cooperation with local authorities.
You aren't responsible for fixing any of this, just for not getting in the way of what others are doing to deal with it. Find satisfaction in being of help to others and doing the best you can not to cause any problems, and hopefully that will alleviate any real terror from taking hold. And if you don't mind my saying so, you don't have to watch/read the news, you know. If you know enough about the situation to be responsible, change the channel or the Web page or the headline on your phone any time it comes up, if it isn't being helpful or entertaining. The information age is a blessing AND a curse. Information is like water: you need some of it in order to drink and bathe, but the firehose of information aimed at us these days can take the skin right off our bodies and knock us down and drown us, if we aren't careful. Step away from the hose.
Off my soapbox now. Just trying to help.
Everyone needs a soapbox now and then.
As someone who is in the high risk group, like yourself,(autoimmune is already attacking my lungs and thyroid) it is especially worrisome that they are telling us to stay home as much as possible. I hate being cooped up. I've been out back doing yard work (mowing lawn, spraying weeds anything to get out of the house for a little bit). I can not stand being inside much. I hope it doesn't come down to quarantines here. Two confirmed cases in my state.
I've been watching the hysteria over the primary results yesterday, at least its something to distract from the virus news although its not any less anxiety inducing.
I have not gone and bought masks or gloves or noclean or of that stuff tho I may have made a costco run for extra toilet paper. Shh don't tell PR.

Ready to run out and buy masks, gloves, a noclean, lysol....
So, here's the reason *NOT* to buy masks... when you inhale, any virus particles are going to sail right through the mask like viruses through Windows security... or salt granules through a slice of swiss cheese.
Masks trap
EXHALED moisture droplets and such, which is why medical people wear them in the operating room, to keep THEIR germs away from the patient.
Even if a mask did happen to pick up something as you were breathing in... you'd then have that stuck right in front of your nose until you changed the mask, thus
increasing your chance of catching whatever it is you're trying to protect yourself from.
Stay sane, wash your hands, don't touch your face.
Interesting. I wasn't really going to buy masks
but that is good info to know. Thanks for sharing.

I don't see anything wrong with doing yard work, unless there's someone upwind close by that's coughing at you... Seems that your yard still counts as "home".

Enjoy the sunshine.

The NSA computers keep records of all your purchases and automatically cross checks them against rudimentary algorithmic interpretations of the data from your phone's cameras and microphones. It's all a lot simpler than it used to be now that the data interpretation and collation aspects are all fully automated and integrated. Are you sure you want to keep using that brand of toothpaste? And you really should start brushing the full two minutes.

Well, your "Big Brother Is Watching"™ theory has a wrench thrown into it, by the fact that I *do* buy toilet paper, gotta have something to blow my nose on when in there. so there
And the toothpaste is left over from a former roommate, I am a little dubious about it, now that you mention it... As to the two minutes, I'll stop brushing too long if you INSIST.

My mother always brushed her teeth with baking soda, and flossed with sewing thread.
In 86 years, not . One . Single . Cavity.
