After trying on a "Total face mask" which covers the entire face, including eyes and forehead, I had a vision of a type of mask like a clear plastic bag that could cover the whole head and somehow seal around the neck without anything touching the face.
Actually with an Internet search for "full head cpap mask" I found this:
It's called StarMed CaStar CPAP Hood and seems to be a real thing. But does anyone have it or use it? All i found on here was this thread mocking the idea of it:

I'd rather use the iron lung in a bag, folds up to fit in a small bag. Jim
Nothing on or in your head! Should sell like Hot Cakes.

The pressure on the outside of the neck could negate a lot of pressure opening up the throat.

I'm not sure but it looks like there is a rigid ring around it that you cannot rest on.

You CPAP Tolerators don't get it. Some of us who can't do CPAP would be willing try something like this, if just once.

Yes, because a dome over your head strapped under your arms is
so much easier to tolerate.

And those of us with claustrophobia think it looks like a nightmare. (Shudder). The less on my face the better !

I am not claustrophobic--but that would push me off the cliff.
No cool room air to soothe my hot, sweaty face.
Thank you, but my nasal pillows are just right.
I sleep like Goldilocks--if Goldilocks had streaks of silver.
