Low Pressure CPAP Machine?

Post by ButterflyEffect » Sun Apr 28, 2019 4:20 pm

Hello,

I have sleep apnea. I started with a small Lofta machine, however, despite trying over two dozen times I can’t wear the mask to sleep, because there is too much pressure. I have tried several masks and the machine was set to the lowest possible setting.

Does anyone know of a machine that has a very very low pressure setting? I understand that it needs positive pressure, but I need to start low and increase it to let my body adjust.

Would love to get some help from those that know!

The lowest pressure on current machines is 4. If you can't handle 4 there is something seriously wrong that CPAP won't fix.

And some find 4cm uncomfortably low. I need 6 or 8 in order not to feel starved for air.

in case you don't know what our friend is talking about-

https://buyminicpap.com/

http://lofta.com/

i myself know nothing about this machine, but it's labeled as a mini cpap. not sure how much one can expect to get out of this.

to the OP, i'm not trying to be negative. for all i know, this machine will work wonders for you. i've only been papping less than 4 years. i don't know everything. (i hardly know anything!)

but i'm kind of concerned about this product.

Lofta appears to be an online sleep store...machines, home sleep studies, masks, etc all sold. Not a brand name manufacturer of any machine.

Not sure which machine is being used but they do offer the ResMed AirMini which might be what OP is using. We need more information.

I was wondering abou that too, Zonker. Looks like Lofta markets machines made by other companies. In the case of the AirMini, it seems to be a ResMed product.

Butterfly Effect, could you look on the front of your machine and let us know what it says?

Also, I want to echo jnk’s remark. If my machine were set to 4, I’d feel like I was suffocating. I need 6 or 7 to feel OK.

So it’d be helpful if you could let us know what pressure your machine is currently set at. It may seem counterintuitive, but you may actually feel better if you raise your pressure.

Some of the old ones went as low as three. You really can't go much lower, as you need that much pressure just to clear the exhaled CO2.

I personally have first-hand experience using Lofta as a HMDR and also through their home sleep test program/arrangement with an outside provider through what they call their "Complete Path" program: https://buyminicpap.com/pages/lofta-complete-path I have a very high insurance deductible and was looking for an alternative to the $3500 out-of-pocket cost of a sleep study along with all the hoops and hurdles imposed by insurance... and Lofta provided that alternative for me at a very reasonable price, all while helping me to start treatment for my severe OSA (AHI 58). I went from initial consultation to starting PAP therapy in about 12 days, and that included the New Year holiday! The best part is that with the package I purchased, I also have unlimited access to a RRT "sleep coach" who has been able to assist with recommendations and also has interfaced with the sleep doc who completed the original sleep study and assisted with a prescription change to an auto bi-level from APAP to help address problems with aerophagia - they even refunded 100% of the purchase cost of the AirSense 10 Autoset against the purchase of an AirCurve 10 VAUTO, plus they matched the advertised sale price of another online retailer!

I think their marketing has focused to an overly large extent on selling the ResMed AirMini because it allows them to grab folks' attention... but I honestly can't say enough good things about Lofta or the experiences I've had with them.

Because I found it very discouraging when I was struggling badly and had exactly ZERO responses to my post... but hey, it's probably never happened to you, so why worry about it, right?
