Re: SH chart - what is happening here?
So, that would fit with my guess, a lesser vent rate would tend to hide leaks. Thanks, Pugsy.
Kate, so what we need now is your machine mask setting to see what the Vent Rate for ResMed is at 20 (about your pressure) compared to the Bleep at 20 which is stated to be 45L/min, but might be less according to Pugsy's findings.

Re: SH chart - what is happening here?
When doing attachments we can't change the thumbnail size and they do end up huge sometimes unless we change the image size. No biggie.
Those vent rates shown are very generous. In real life when I did my experiment using 25 IPAP I got less than 25 L/min vent rate....just barely under. I would assume even less with lower pressures but I didn't test it.
I used my PR S1 760 because the top line reported is the total leak which includes vent rate...and since I was awake I know that there was zero excess leak that means that top leak line is all total leak or vent rate.

Re: SH chart - what is happening here?
Anyway, ResMed stated mask vent rates are between 49 and 54 at 20 which is higher than that of the Bleep by up to 9L/min which would be enough to hide a leak of 8 L/min, which I've found typical of a mouth exhale leak.

OK. So my flow shape is frequently like that of the OP, and I apologize for hijacking the thread, but since we are still answering the original question, I think I don't feel too bad.
The conclusion appears to be that the flow shape observed indicates inhalation through the mask and exhalation through the........I'll change that.
The conclusion appears to be that the flow shape observed indicates inhalation through the mask and exhalation NOT through the mask.
Are their any reasons this is a bad thing that interferes with the therapy?

In my opinion, the problems might be dry mouth and/or disturbed sleep, otherwise, no.katestyles wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2019 11:02 amOK. If it doesn't seem to bother you, I wouldn't worry about it. To prevent it, you could try tape or Scunci viewtopic.php?f=1&t=112758#p1086296

Mouth taping would need to be completely airtight to prevent such exhalation, correct?

LOL
OK call me skeptical, but how will a porous scunci stop me exhaling through my mouth?

Re: SH chart - what is happening here?
In theory, yes; but completely airtight could result in "chipmunk cheeks" where the pressure causes the cheeks to puff out, which in itself can be disturbing. I prefer the Scunci which discourages and quiets mouth breathing, but still allows venting to prevent chipmunk cheeks.katestyles wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2019 11:17 amMouth taping would need to be completely airtight to prevent such exhalation, correct?
Your sleep may not be being disturbed by mouth exhalations. A clue, if you are seeing CA's closely following them, might be a sign of disturbance.
Don't try to fix something that isn't broke.

Re: SH chart - what is happening here?
Could be. The first looks like a disturbance CA (Leading with a deep breath), but it could be just a normal arousal. The second looks like it occurs during an awake or disturbance from leak. Your CA index doesn't appear to be high, only 0.67 on your last post. I wouldn't say that requires fixing. Better to work on your OA. At 2.58, I would consider that too high.
Why don't you post some charts that call out your OA's and let people see what's going on there?
And while we're at it. Make sure you're doing your best with Sleep Hygiene.
And start your own thread, if you haven't already. If you have, and want this stuff in it, you can copy and paste. Just quote what you want, copy it from the composition box and post it as a new reply in your thread. Then exit from the quoted thread without submitting.

I have my own thread, but I am interested in the OP's question about these flattened breathing flows. And I am interested in educating myself and others.
