Hi!

Post by Mskitty76 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 9:15 pm

Hi! I'm new here, and wanted to introduce myself and ask a quick question. I am Kat from East Texas (near Tyler). Been using a ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto since May 31, 2018. I started with a nose mask. It was too big. Got switched to a full face mask that left pimples and a swollen ridge right between my eyebrows. Tried the nasal pillow (in the nostrils only) and it won't stay put. They tried a full face mask next that doesn't cover your nose. It covers your mouth with holes for your nostrils. It wasn't stay in place either. It slides over and blocks my nose, which wakes me up. So I went back to the regular full face mask. Now I have a horrible rash on my right cheek where my mask sits. It is raw and hurts. Any suggestions?

Go to Pad A Cheek and order a mask liner. You can get them here at CPAP.com or order directly from Pad A Cheek. The liner goes between your mask and your skin and should prevent rashes or pimples.

Some of us have skin reactions to the plastics masks are made of and the Pad A Cheek liners help.

In the meantime, you can make your own liner by cutting up an all-cotton T-shirt to use as a liner.

Also, make sure you wash your mask parts with a mild soap EVERY day if you are having skin reactions. Rinse well.

It appears you may be having a reaction to the mask. This is something to bring up with your doctor. In the mean time, you can try a mask liner. Karen at Padacheek makes some very nice mask liners. For a regular full face mask, you can try making your own liners using the pattern found at this site:
http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/diy-cotton-mask-liner.pdf

This pattern will work with small and medium sized masks. It can be enlarged for large masks. The hole in the center allows clearance for your nose and mouth. It can be enlarged as long as you leave enough material to go under the mask cushion. I made mine out of an old, well-used tee shirt. I have made them out of knit paint rags I purchased at Lowes.

Thank y'all so much! I've been having issues from day one with the masks, but can't get the lady at the supply place to understand my issue. Since I had my sleep study, I haven't heard back from the docs about how I'm doing or anything. I'm seriously considering going to my regular doctor about the face rash. It hurts and I can't wear my mask right now because of it. Ugh. I'm REALLY trying to do good with my therapy. This doesn't help.

See your regular doctor about the skin issue.
We tend to assume mask related and it probably is but that's one ugly rash and it needs to be checked out ASAP.

Your mention of it hurting....and the way it looks...first thing to cross my mind is shingles...and people can get shingles anywhere...and when it's on the face it can potentially travel to the eye area..

Now it might just be related to the mask but it also might be something else and it's really ugly....See your primary care doctor ASAP...don't wait on this one.

I think it might be shingles too.
If your doc is not available, go to the ER.
This could be serious.

Try a liner from padacheek, or, I first started with a sock I cut out to my FFM. It actually helped compared to just wearing my mask without it. The wound I'd get wrapped up with a gauze or bandage depending on the size of it and even if you get a liner or sock it should be separate from those. I'd put some disinfectant on it if you find it's been opened again during the day, as well. Iodine's fine too.

My wife had shingles on her cheek about 5 years ago...it appeared in a round circle about the size of a quarter. You should see your doctor quickly...If you treat it within 72 hours, it will go away quicker. All you people over 60 should get the Shingles shot..it will not stop you from getting it, but it will be milder if you do.

I use Dr. Bronner's liquid soap to clean my mask. Most health food stores have it and a lot of "regular" stores with a health section.

I'm a long way from 60, but I do have a compromised immune system from chemo. Damn it if I didn't develop shingles. (and pretty much every other effing opportunistic infection. (O.I.'s)

I am grateful that it wasn't on my face but it looked eerily similar to that ... it was super painful. I got pills immediately and used "cooling ice" cortisone.

I'm adding my vote to the others that you should NOT play around with that and go to your doctor or an urgent care immediately. If it is shingles time is of the essence on that medication.

Wash and disinfect your pillowcase and bedding along with you mask.

Good Luck and TAKE CARE ... that looks super painful!
:(
Began XPAP May 2016. Autoset Pressure min. 8 / max 15. Ramp off. ERP set at 2. No humidity. Sleepyhead software installed and being looked at daily, though only beginning to understand the data.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see my doctor. Honey cleaned it with peroxide then put triple antibiotic ointment with pain reliever on it last night for me. It seems to be drying out, thank God.i have a spot on my neck that's been getting irritated with the skin broken since I started wearing the masks. He doctored it for me last night, too.

Try using something completely unscented, or (for the time being) either alcohol, or whatever you normally wash your face with. (just in case you're having a reaction from the scents in the Dawn.

I was afraid to use alcohol because I didn't want to mess up my mask.i saw that some folks have used it with no problems, so I was planning on doing that once my face heals up.
