Dry mouth problem
Dry mouth problem
I haven’t posted here in quite a while. I finally found a full face mask that works for me and does not leak. I have the humidity up all the way. I have 2 machines and tried them both and when breathing through my mouth with the highest setting of humidity I get terrible dry mouth. Is there anything I can do about it? Is there a brand of CPAP machine that has a humidifier that is super humid air? Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried any of the dry mouth rinses, like Biotene?garyland wrote:I haven’t posted here in quite a while. I finally found a full face mask that works for me and does not leak. That didn’t work for me. But I just had a thought My pressure is set at 10. If I lower it to eight will I get more humidity as the air is not moving over the humidifier as fast.

Why do people always recommend rinses? I'll tell you how rinses work for dry mouth.. wrote: Have you tried any of the dry mouth rinses, like Biotene?
Your mouth is dry. You use a dry mouth rinse. It feels great. Your mouth feels refreshed. You use your CPAP. Five minutes later, your mouth is very dry.
What works, if applied properly, is a good dry mouth gel. I use GC Dry Mouth Gel. I learned how to apply it, just before putting my mask on, so that it lasts all night.
GC Dry Mouth Gel - https://www.amazon.com/GC-America-2526- ... +mouth+gel
Once you learn how to apply it properly, a tube last about a month.
Re: Dry mouth problem
Thank you Granny, just got off of Amazon.com and I ordered a tube. I will let you know how it works for me

GC Dry Mouth Gel is Sodium Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose. Doug’s DIY physical chemistry
GC Dry Mouth Gel is Sodium Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose < 5% gel with water.
$15 per pound at AmaXon.com. https://www.amazon.com/Carboxy-Methyl-C ... B00SI5BZXK
At 0.05 w/w, a pound makes twenty pounds of gel. The trick is getting it mixed. It will only mix with cold water and then only with difficulty as the gel forms around the particles preventing further water contact. The solution is to disperse the Methyl Cellulose in HOT water, with which it will NOT mix, cool the mixture to where the MC is soluble, and mix while adding water to the desired concentration.
ETA much later: LOL LOL LOL. CMC-NA is the major ingredient in KY (surgical) Jelly. Following that hint, I found that chlorhexidine gluconate is included in the OTC K-Y NG formulation. Chlorhexidine gluconate by Hibiclens is my preferred antiseptic skin cleanser.

Re: Dry mouth problem
One of the tricks to get it to last all night is in the application. You might want to start out using the application instructions in the leaflet that comes with the product. If that doesn't work too well for you, send me a PM or ask in this thread, and I will tell you the application procedure I worked out.

Re: Dry mouth problem
I have been fighting neck cancer for 6 years. I've had a lot of surgeries and treatments etc. Due to these I have a couple of collapsed saliva glands that causes bad dry mouth without my cpap. The only product I have found that has worked is Xylimelts and they produced a little too much actually. It may help. I had never heard of the gel though either. Just a zillion different sprays, pills, rx toothpastes etc. I thought I had tried it all.

does this, in your opinion, make xylitol bad for you?

Absolutely not. Here is a case of an alcohol that is not ethanol. Alcohols are a large family of organic chemicals and methanol and ethanol are the simplest of the monoalcohols. In general -ols have a -OH functional bound to the carbon atom. So cholester-ol and paracetamol-ol are ‘alcohols’.

Xylitol is actually GOOD for the enamel on teeth.
Sometimes not so much on your digestive system.

Re: Dry mouth problem
after i had first started my therapy, my dental hygienist asked the routine question of any change in my health. so i told her about cpap. by coincidence, her office had just had a visit from a sales rep and she had a sample and brochures about xylimelts and how they help guard against tooth decay.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sat Jul 07, 2018 7:48 pmXylitol is actually GOOD for the enamel on teeth.

they are kind of expensive, but i'm testing out ACT Dry Mouth lozenges, which are a bit cheaper. not sure i like them as well, though.

Velamints are loaded with xylitol, and way less expensive.
