Resmed S8 vs. S10

Hi,

I am still using the "old" S8 (Autoset EPR) and I am satisfied with it. The most obvious advantage is it's size with the built-in power supply. As I travel frequently by bicycle, size really matters.

Unfortunately the main button does not work well any longer. I have to push hard to start or stop the machine, which is quite uncomfortable at night, of course. Resmed wants me to switch to the S10. According to the specifications it is 255 x 150 x 116 mm, about twice as big as the S8. And the power supply adds to the size.

Is that true? Does anyone have pictures of S8 and S10 side by side?

Hello Andreas.
Two years ago I had my titling with an S8 autoset and I really liked it.
The S10 autoset is bigger but not so much and it's a great APAP.
The S10 external power supply is uncomfortable but it's on the floor and hiding it under the bed, no problem.

Courage, follow the S10 novelty. You don't have to be scared.

I travel frequently by bicycle and the size of my panniers is very limited. So everything bigger than the S8 will not fit.

Do the S8 machines have Smart Start on them so that the machine will start without having to push the button???
If so, turn Smart Start on and then the machine will start automatically with just a couple of breaths. You have to be able to get into the clinical setup menu area to turn Smart Start on though.

There is a known fix for fixing the troublesome on/off button on the S8 discussed here on this forum with pictures even on how to fix the issue but I don't have a link handy.

Eventually you are going to need to get another machine and if size is that critical to you and you know want the newer models then you need to find older models and they are getting scarce.
You might try secondwindcpap.com ...they have some S8 machines available.

Unfortunately not with my setup (full face mask, APAP with EPR/EBW)

I will see if I can get the AirMini as a permanet replacement.

According to this manual Smart Start is available but you may not be seeing it because you aren't in the clinical setup menu are where you can turn it on.

Yes it is, but depending on the mask. With my mask, it is not.

Is it the mask type or leak alert selection that is causing SmartStart to be unavailable to you?
I never used a S8 so I don't know all the little ins and outs of that model but if my memory serves me correctly SmartStart was unavailable when leak alert was turned on. Turn leak alert off and SmartStart became available.
I don't remember mask type being a factor but maybe it is...but for sure leak alert was.
Might look in your settings and see if you have leak alert turned on and if it is turn it off and see if SmartSense will become available.
If it is available using SmartSense will prolong the life of that on/off switch because you won't have to touch it to start or stop the machine.

You may be able to make smart start work with a FFM mask by covering the anti-asphyxia port on the mask with your hand and breathing in and out. Sometimes, it will work even without that if you forcefully inhale and exhale. Some machines won't let you do auto start if the mask type is set to FFM.

That is the case.

On the other hand, the S8 performs well with a wrong tube length selected. I chose 2 metres (the shortest option available) but on vacations I use a two feet tube, which takes much less space in my bicycle pannier.

I just started using the (let me be specific) Resmed Aircuve VAuto. I had the Resmed S9 VPAP for 3-years.
The Aircurve VAuto looks very similar to the S10. Check and see, https://www.resmed.com/us/en/consumer/p ... vices.html
The S8 is 2 generations old. If it functions well and you have no complaints, I would advise you to stay with the S8! If you insurance allows coverage for a new device, I highly recommend the VAuto. Again, please check out the site for it's 'fit-for-use'. The VAuto top-of-the-line model that Resmed offers - again check which one you need - personal conditions may vary.

the S10 is way too big.

I'll keep the S8 as long as it works.

My insurance pays an annual fee so I can have the newest device and mask once a year or so. But the AirMini is not an option as ResMed does not offer it in annual fee rate. And if I get a new device, I have to return the used machine.
