bigger nostrils???

Post by SeattleJen » Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:10 am

OK I know this sounds bizarre ---

but I feel like my swift is stretching out my nostrils!!! I hate to sound vain and I know this is kind of stupid but is it possible???

Eek! Why can't this just be simple!

You're not the first one to bring this subject up, Jen. If it bothers you enough, you could always switch to a regular nasal mask, which wouldn't have the problem. Or you could do like I did and use the Comfort Curve mask. The Comfort Curve seals by snugging up against the base of the nostrils without going into the nares.

Good luck.

Regards,
Bill

nostrils

I have been using the Breeze for several years.
There is no doubt in my mind that mu nares are stretched noticably.

It does not make it any more sociably acceptable, but it makes it much easier to pick ones nose.

I felt that way too when I tried the swift, I swore that my nostrils were bigger the next morning. Now, while I never cared for the swift and have since changed to the comfort lite 2 with the nose pillows interface, I learned that alot of that feeling has to do with what size pillows you are using and how tight you are making the head gear. The pillows only have to go in slightly without a lot of force. Another words, you shoud not look like or feel like a PUG! What I found helpful, was when fitting pillows in the first few times, put your cpap pressure on the full amount (don't use ramping) while fitting the mask and making adjustments. Once you get the proper fight at your maximum pressure, you can then restart it at the lowest pressure, but now you'll know in the middle of the night with full pressure, the mask will still fit accordingly. I also found AYR saline nasal gel beneficial for me in and around my nares. Good Luck!!

I think my nostrils are bigger too since using various nasal pillow masks.
And I just don't care as long as I feel better.

I have no doubt it could be true. Look at all the ear piercing that stretches the lobes!!!

I even saw where there is a culture where they add more and more brass hoops around their neck to stretch the neck. Afterwards, they can't remove the hoops due to the neck muscles being to weak to support their heads.

This is true and I believe it! My uncle Stanley's nostrils are enormous and one is bigger than the other. He had to switch pillows every 6 weeks and now he makes his own out of stoppers. Anyways, one nostril is a little smaller because his nose is pierced on that side so now that nostril and hole are about the same size. He hates the pillows but masks make him panic and wake up destroying stuff all over the place. My grandma says his nostrils are wore out from picking with his big fingers but now it makes sense. His left nostril is pretty bad and he can fit the whole tip of the handle of my grandma's potato masher up there. I think I'll tell him about this but I'm not sure what he can do about it now.

my nares have definitely gotten bigger in the year i've been using nasal pillows....i don't care if it's vain, i'm pissed...before i know it, i'm going to look like the end of a double barreled shotgun

and by the way, rodrugg, remind me not to eat at your grandma's house

My father in-law used nasal pillows for years and it definitely gave him a bit of a pug nose. Now he was on CPAP 15+ years ago and the equipment was not what it is today so perhaps that had a lot to do with it...or maybe he wore his gear way too tight.

Regardless, my wife remember her dads growing nose and has begged me not to use the pillows. Thankfully I like my nasal mask just fine so it's a moot point!

I've been using the NAII for a year. I don't notice any ENLARGING of my nares. I have a soft nose, with very pliable nares. They appear to stretch to accommodate the cannula, then return to normal in the AM. Kinda reminds me of other body parts...

Maybe you need to do more "Nose Kegels"?

LOL,
Babs

Ancient attempt at curing obstructive sleep apnea no doubt.

I tried a few things myself but they did not work:

That must come in handy from time to time.

Babs, the Nasal aire does not enlarge the naires.
Pillows do.
My wifes dr told her to switch from the breeze to the nasal aire for that reason. The breeze was making her nostrils bigger. She hated it.
we were in NY at the time and the sleep docs there seem to be better informed then in Florida for some reason.
