Heidi,
Just to re-iterate, since you're the lead on this one. I think one thread per week would be good. I thought Friday early evening would work well because it's near the end of the week and it would give people the weekend to post their results for the week. I'm open to any format, but feel this needs to be organized up front to keep it on track.
Your idea is a great one. It going to be a popular thread if kept organized and easy to follow.

Heidi,
If you wish to do the posting of a weekly topic, but worry about it being a burden to do so, you could enlist help, like myself or whoever you wish. You and the other person or so could coordinate by private messages on who gets to post the topic. If you did it yourself, but found yourself busy one week, just call on our help in posting the weekly topic.
FYI -- must be a great idea, for I noticed there's already over 100 views of this topic, which shows me you are on to something.

I do want to keep this thread open and going.
I want people who view this to throw in their suggestions. This thread is going to be for everyone and since everyone is so different I think it would be helpful to get more suggestions from different posters as far as what direction they would like to see this thread go in.
Any format suggestions or ideas about how to keep us all on the same page. Like maybe posting weights under profile or something???? I'm not exactly sure how to do this so like I said I am very open to everyone's suggestions.

Heidi,
My suggestion is to view suggestions during the first half of this week, and decide mid-week how to do it.
Or, you could just post something on Friday or whenever, and just see how it goes at first, wait for the people posting to make the suggestions then too. Just a thought, for what it's worth.

What a great idea!
Hi Heidi,
I think that this is a super idea. While I am not one to go out to meetings, and I have gone to WW before, I do have one thought.
WeightWatchers might not be too happy to have their copyrighted material distributed for free on the web. I don't know if they have gone after anyone, legally, on this, but it would be unfortunate to find out the hard way. They have all of those books for sale, and might not appreciate us distributing the info here... I used to work in a library, and copyrights are taken VERY seriously in many circles!
I hate to be a wet blanket on this, but didn't know if that was a problem! As a business owner, proprietary knowledge is of utmost importance and to be protected!
Again, I think that your idea is a great idea, but we all have to be careful of the legal side of things these days.
Sleep well,
Jane

Jane,
My answer to this is to either join WW or TOPS or use that wonderful resource called your local library.
I don't want to do anything illegal and like I said in a later post I believe if you join WW they do give you all of the information on that first visit and you can chose from there on whether you want to continue with WW or go to TOPS or somewhere else or just try on your own.
I'm not going to make anyone do anything. I just want to provide a place where we can support each other and offer encouragement.
Sincerely,
Heidi

I am going to try to keep this post near the top of our forum by making comments and continuing to invite feedback/ideas.
I am no expert in the field of weight loss, just a fellow OSAer who desperately needs to lose weight. I guess between the DX of OSA and Triglyceride level of 519--I'm really feeling that it is time to do something.
I know there are alot of myths surrounding weight loss. I also know that weight loss is possible even if we have tried before and been successful, only to gain it all back.
Keys to this are:
1. Making wise food choices
2. Being physically active
3. Making positive lifestyle changes with a positive mindset
4. Create a supportive atmosphere
I think first and foremost, the biggest thing is making a committment. It may take you a while to talk yourself in to it. I know that I have told myself many lies about my weight and about not being able to lose the weight.
We can learn how to lose weight and keep it off!!

I'm a avid reader. I read all kinds of non-fiction. The thing that has really sparked my interest to lose weight and probably has been the most reasonable and easy to read book is:
[/b]Weight Loss That Lasts: Break Through The 10 Big Diet Myths
Author James M. Rippe, M.D. and Weight Watchers[/b]
I have read tons of books on weight loss and I can guarantee you this one is a very easy read, its encouraging, honest, etc.
I checked mine out from the local library. I am able to search my library's database online and reserve them all while at home on my computer and when they come in I go pick them up.
HONESTLY, THIS IS A DIFFERENT BOOK, I'd encourage any means of weight loss but I'd really encourage you to get a copy of this book to look over.
WE CAN DO THIS!!

Count me in...
My wife and I just joined WW last Wednesday, so the timing is perfect. I have 50 lbs to lose. Last time I was on WW, I lost 17 lbs in 3 months. My wife did notice that my snoring (later diagnosed with OSA) did, in fact, decrease significantly. Unfortunately, after 3 months and feeling fantasic, an abnormal EKG came back, lead to a slew of additional tests over the next month. I was pissed that I had lost all the weight...and my health seemed to be declining! So I gave up. Fortunately, they found absolutely nothing wrong with me, but by then, I had given up on WW.
WW is an excellent way to feel healthy again. They stress not to think of it as a diet (which would eventually end...and you go back to eating the old way,) but rather a change in lifestyle. Now that I am considered middle-aged (although my brain doesn't agree), I'm finding that most health complaints and problems that I experience seem to have the common component that losing weight will only help the situation. Therefore, we have decided to do WW for health reasons (as opposed to looking good at the pool) this time. But hey, if we happen to look sexy (my wife, at least) after taking off some pounds, that's a great side benefit.
BTW, WW has a new program called "CORE PLAN" which appeals to those that hate the measuring and tracking of the normal points program (which is still the most popular plan.) I happen to like the core plan, because of that reason, and also because it stresses the need to stay comfortably satisfied (neither starving, nor so full that you're busting at the seams.) This seems to steer towards the fact of it being a change of lifestyle (in other words, let your body tell you when to eat.) Besides, I HATE the measuring and tracking! My wife, on the other hand, prefers the traditional points system.
Heidi, one last suggestion I have is to discuss with Johnny, what may be available with in this site, from an administrative point of view. He may be able to enable settings that allow for some sort of tracking mechanism (i.e., spreadsheet, graphs, etc.) that we're not aware of.

Heidi,
This is a GREAT IDEA!! I was just thinking of the exact same thing over the weekend. I, too, have approximately 70 pounds to loose to be back to my normal size and weight. I had tried weightwatchers, but that didn't seem to work for me and Slimfast doesn't work either. My brothers-in-law (that 2 of them) are on the Atkins diet and they have seemed to loose alot of weight in just the past couple of months.
I am on synthroid for my thyroid, so Soy diets don't work for me because it interfers with my meds. (Thus, bye bye slimfast). I was thinking of cutting out carbs (and only keeping approx. 30 grams of carbs per day) to see how that works out.
Yeah Heidi!! Thanks for coming up with this post.... I was afraid to post something like this in fear of people telling me I was being ridiculous.

Laughter never killed anyone..... Go ahead, laugh! It's good for you!!

Just a comment on this subject.
Hi all, This is my take.
Why pay $10 a month to join Ww or TOPS when you can join a gym or health club for a bit more.
They have weight loss classes and the exercise rooms/ equipment / staff to back it up.
Like Chris said. Stay out of the center of the store. Everything you need is in the produce , meat and dairy isles. Just dont tempt yourself by going into the junk isles or the "Danger Zone" as I call it.
You must not only eat different . You must eat less.
If you have lots of fat other things happen in your body. Fat stores estrogens in woman and converts testosterone to estradiol in men. This makes weight loss difficult. There are ways around this.
You might find a visit to a weight loss or anti aging specialist well worth it.
They take a different approach to weight loss other than eat less and exercise more.
Having a thread on this site is a good idea but lets not make it an advertisement for WW or TOPS. Give solid advice or encouragment or be quiet.
I hate when a thread starts with " I don't know anything about this BUT" Then we get a ramble about nothing.
If you know something say so. Give some facts. If you don't know anything don't post ! Let someone with some knowledge answer the question.
If you have another health problem that is contradictory to the advice keep it to yourself. You know already and chances are so does another with the same problem.

Howdy,
A bit random with all the weight watchers and gym talk but it's weight loss related. My normal weight should be around 195-200 and during college and right after college I was at about 230.
I do software/content/management stuff all day so unless I'm walking between offices I'm sitting. When I get home, I used eat and watch DVDs or read. I didn't move!
About two months ago, I decided it was time for a radical life change. I enrolled in a tae kwon do class. It's made a major difference!
I feel better - more alert and sharp. I have a place I can go and focus totally on something for an hour a night. I'm more flexible. Also, I've dropped 25 pounds without changing my eating habits - and I like cheese!
It's a bit extreme but I really didnt want to do the depressing run on a treadmill thing. I wanted something that I could use in other situations - something individual and personal that I could overcome. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it's worked wonders for me and I wanted to share it as a great way to get out of the house in the evenings, meeting other people, and have fun.
