Weight Loss Support
I'm wanting to join Weight Watchers. If anyone is interested in a group effort to lose some weight, I think with the community we have formed here would be a good place to check in with each other (those who are interested)
for good support along with the OSA issues that are unique to us.
Its just a thought and I don't want to suggest something that is out of line. I just think we have a good thing going and if some were interested, we could lean on each other for this also.

Heidi,
I think this is a great idea, and I hope you get other positive responses as well. Weight is a tough part of this existance with sleep apnea for many of us. For some, just starting the treatment helps making losing weight easier. Still, losing weight is difficult, and those of us who struggle, we need all the support we can get. Good luck with this topic.

I have about 70 pounds to lose and I think that if anyone is interested...
My vision would be that we would each join something like Weight Watchers or something similiar or do it on our own, but checking in and giving support to each other as well as support to remain compliant with CPAP therapy, I think it would be really good.
Anyone who is interested, please let me know and we can figure out how we can support each other in this endevor...
Thanks,
Heidi
P.S. I really could use the support/encouragement and I think there are a lot of others too

I would join in on this effort as I have 50 pounds to lose as well. But I will not do the weight watchers as I have never know anybody that has been successful on it and I really think it is a get rich sceme for predators for those that own the clinics. I lean more to the Atkins diet routine. But maintenace is a killer. I got down to 180 on it a few years back, I am currently 242 but then I quite tobacco and I have gone up and still after three years have this oral fixation thing going.
Yes , Sounds like a great idea. I could stand to loose a few pounds. Instead of sitting on the pc get out and do something. Join a gym. Get a friend to go with every day. Even if you just walk a bit on the treadmill or elliptical. Its important to make a routine and stick with it. At least you're not at home eating and watching the TV.
Drink lots of water when you're hungry. Its probably thirst .
Stay off the carbs for a while. The rise in insulin just makes you want to eat more.
Walk.
Have lots of good snackes in your house. carrots, celery, nuts. chicken legs dried beef sticks.
They say most of us eat the same 10 meals over and over. Substitute 10 healthy meals.
Learn when your body is just bored and when its hungry.
When in the grocery store stay out of the center isles. Stay on the outside. Thats where the meats, vegies and dairy is.
Park as far away from the door to the store as possible. The walk will do you good.
OK , i know this is all too simple but it works. We need to keep telling ourselves this.
Now get off the internet and go for a walk.
Cheers,
Chris

Heidi, I think this is a great idea. I could certainly do with losing a similar amount so would be happy to get involved in supporting and encouraging others as it might help me keep on the programme
rock and roll, I don't think it matters which route people choose to use. The secret muat be to find something that works for you. Over the years, I've tried many dieting methods, and can get good short term results with all of them providing my own will power and desire is right. I've not been to weight watchers, but wouldn't knock it if it helps even one person.

I'm no doctor but I am a nurse. I have tried the Atkins and South Beach and found it very hard to stick to it because I like a variety of food.
Weight Watchers is centered on healthy eating. There is also a program called T.O.P.S. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). I want you who are interested in doing this weight loss to look in your area for either of these two programs. I know that TOPS is cheaper than WW. I think they charge $10 for a month or three months. Basically you can follow whatever weight loss program with TOPS that works for you. But I want to stress the fact that research has proven that with Atkins and South Beach you gain the weight back because no one can go on eating that forever. I think we all have to make our own choice here. But be supportive in whatever program we chose. We need somewhere to go in our area and weight in and get that support in our community and also here.
I just know that with my experience I have only had success with WW, have never tried TOPS but think that is where I will start going to meetings because it is cheaper. I have to do something 70 pounds is a lot to lose.
I feel like we have all kind of become friends, so to speak and so I think we could support each other tremendously.
I actually shut off my computer this morning and dressed up all of the kids and out for a walk we went.
Its just too easy for me to put everything off until tomorrow. I procastinate way too much.
I also have bought some in home exercise "walking programs" and they really do work. The name of the lady who does them is Leslie Sansone.
You can do a 1, 2 or 3 mile walk and its really exercising.
I am so open to comments and suggestions. Summer is coming and I want to start looking better and feeling better.
Keep the communication up and let me know what everyone thinks.

Heidi,
What did you have in mind? I could see doing something like this.
To start everybody could post their goal. Then each week (say, Friday night)you could post a new thread to which everybody posts their progress that week and what has worked or not worked. We can all respond with kudos regarding our successes and suggestions regarding our failures.
Let me know what you think.

I've seen a website or two which did precisely this, not in association with sleep apnea or other condition, but the sites did essentially the same thing. People would write in with their successes and failures and helpful hits as to what worked for them. I would imagine it would work here, if it stuck to one topic thread, say one topic thread a week. And then, since they are saved, the differently weekly topic threads could be looked back on whenever necessary. Just a thought.

All I know is that I need your support just as much as you need mine in both wearing the CPAP and losing weight so we all feel better.
I'm open to any brainstorming suggestions.
I was nervous enough just to even suggest the topic.
Steve, I think something like that would work, but I also know that some outside program/support is also needed.
If anyone is interested I do have some WW information (i.e. point system I could scan and send them. OR honestly, if you go to one WW meeting they give you all of the stuff right then and there and the meeting is $10.99, I think.
I was on this over a year ago and I lost 14 pounds in like 6 weeks which is alot. A healthy weight loss is 2 pounds a week.
Remember it took time to put it on, it will take time to take it off!! And I hate exercise just as much as the next guy!

Heidi,
I think people can join whatever outside group they want and set whatever goals they want. I just think for this to work on the forum it needs to be confined to the one thread per week. If it becomes posts and commentary dispersed through-out the regular posts it will be hard to follow and will interfere with the on-topic posts.
I'm sure there will be quite of participants.

I think it a great idea, sharing the info from WW or any other successful program. I think the support idea should be as inclusive as possible, though, i.e., not requiring everyone to follow the same program. But sharing the info from this and other programs seems wonderful. Being inclusive would enable anyone to read and learn, even if they aren't posting their goals or even if they haven't set one yet. This forum is known for being inclusive, so a part of it devoted to weight ought to be too, in my small opinion.
As to a point location for information, I don't know how best to do that. I guess as an interim method, you could just rely on voluntary use of emails or PMs. I don't know. Thanks to Liam, I've learned about creating a blog website, and if anyone wants such a thing set up, I could do that fairly easy. But I'm not sure if that would be the best method. But it's free. Couldn't hurt.

Okay, Steve
I'm following what your saying now... It doesn't matter to me what group they join or if they do, but I just think in order to stick with it we all need to figure out what we are going to do to be the most sucessful.
I think having one post would be great, using this one would be fine. Maybe just updates or struggles with getting motivated or sticking with healthier habits kind of thing?
