New FF mask for mouth breather
New FF mask for mouth breather
Newbie here
I have been on cpap for 6years.Been using Resperonics Comfortfull version 1 and version 2 for 4 years.Could no longer get them.Tried F&P Flexfit 431,Resp Amara(too light and leaks crazy cause mouth and cheek section too narrow)which is lying in my cupboard.Got Mirage Quattro awhile ago(hurts my nosebridge and forehead real bad, makes my nose runny).Got new Resmed Astral 150 Ventilator and Resperonics Comfortgel Blue Full 2weeks ago.But the ComfortGel Blue Full I can only get in Large.According to some u need a larger size than you usually due to the Blue Gel? Sleeping with an old Comfortfull 2 in Large as only it works for me.I'm looking to replace the Gel Blue Full from my home health care insurance. What other masks should I try?I'm between a rock and a hard place.Need cpap due to OSA.I'm a mouth breather and my jaw opens during sleep. My Peep pressure is 8-10

Hi Firefox
Just thought I would mention I am a mouth breather too. I use a FF Resmed Quattro, sizes small & Medium. I take medicine that causes weight gain and my face changes periodically, so I switch back & forth. Just something I figured out trying to get leaks to stop. Pretty much have it figured out now by changing mask sizes. I also sleep on my side with no leaks, sleep like a baby. Hope you get yours figured out, may want to try different sizes just for grins...
By the way the Mirage Quattro nose piece is adjustable, it shouldn't be so tight as to make your nose bridge sore...

Re: New FF mask for mouth breather
I'll look for a different size thank you.Very interesting. All my masks have been in size Large. So I can only go smaller.Yes the Quattro nose piece is adjustable.I have it on 24.But it sags down at night.I sleep on my back.It sags and lie on my nose in sleep.and in my sleep my head turns. So in the head turns it keeps rubbing side to side on my nose in sleep.I have tried a band aid but no difference.I tried tightening the top strap abit to stop the sagging but then I get headaches and it hurts my forehead.I have also tried ajusting the nose piece dial in to see if it stops the sagging but it makes it even worse. The Amara was even worse on nose and seals around my mouth and my cpap pressure just push it away during exhaling making it fart and my cpap alarm goes off. What other masks can I look at?

You can sort by best sellers or best rating.
Don't overlook the hybrid mask selection. I use the Innomed Hybrid - leakproof for me, and nothing touches the bridge of the nose.

Hi Firefox, I have all three of these masks, I believe (Comfortful, Blue Gel, & Quatrro) in different sizes besides Large; let me look through my supplies and see what I can find that might help.Firefox wrote:Newbie here

Another FFM to try would be the Airfit F10. Have you tried using mask liners to help with leaks and comfort? Also, think about using a soft cervical collar or chin strap to help.
I will send you a private message with the masks/ sizes I have.

Thank you for the link ChicagoGranny.I had a look at Innomed Hybrid and Amara View. Will they work for someone like me who's jaw drops during sleep?I sleep on my back and in a half reclined 40 degree sitting position( I have MD so I sleep on a hospital bed). How good are they when your heads turns slightly during sleep?are they prone to leak?
SleepEyes21.That's awesome.Thank you.I'm getting a Airfit F10 next week Friday from my Sleepcare(they are called Breathenet)specialist.Unfortunately in my country u can't try different masks and choose one and send the others back.Non return policy.I have never tried mask liners. To be honest I have never seen them here.I will look for them thank you.I read through some of the forums and I saw some mention a double mouth guard to keep ones jaw closed?Have anyone tried it before?

Yes. I think the Innomed might offer a little more support to maybe help with jaw drop so might lean more in that direction in your situation but the way the Amara View covers the mouth and nose at the same time is a definite advantage too. So it's sort of a toss up.Firefox wrote:I had a look at Innomed Hybrid and Amara View. Will they work for someone like me who's jaw drops during sleep?
Not any more so than any other full face mask and less than some full face masks simply because there's not as much skin contact involved.Firefox wrote:are they prone to leak?
I have tried both...I personally think that the Amara View is a little easier to manage and get and keep a good seal. It's the newer of the 2 models but the Innomed is still a really good mask.
Tough call as to which might work best in your situation. I can see pros and cons with either but none that are huge one way or the other.

Re: New FF mask for mouth breather
I used the Innomed Hybrid for about a year and was successful with it. My jaw would drop a couple of times per night.Firefox wrote:jaw drops during sleep
So, I added a firm foam cervical collar to my nightly routine. This has been a big improvement for me. The collar keeps my neck in the best position for airway patency, and it helps prevent my jaw from dropping. As a bonus, I no longer need very high pressures during REM sleep. I don't remember exactly, but it seems like I have been wearing the collar every night for about four years. Here is some info from one of my posts:
ChicagoGranny wrote:I like the DMI Universal Firm Foam Cervical Collars -

The firm works better and lasts longer than the soft. There seems to be no loss in comfort with the firm over the soft.
The cells in the foam break down over time. One lasts me about four months.
Typically the 3-inch width fits a smaller person, and the 3.5-inch or 4.0-inch fits a larger person. Some may need to change the size up or down on the second order. The larger size you can wear, the more support to keep the jaw from dropping.
Walmart ships free to your closest store for customer pickup.

Like you, I sleep on an adjustable bed with my head raised. I have found the amara view works great for me if I use a mask liner, shich I made myself, and a firm foam cervical collar. The collar helps to hold my head up and my mouth closed while I sleep. I have been using this combination since the first of the year and my AHI is staying under two with only minor leaks from my mask.

Re: New FF mask for mouth breather
So last night I tested the Resmed Airfit F10 in Large that my Sleepcare specialist gave as a demo. The padding and silicon is very soft.I like it.The fit is ok.Not crazy about it but feels ok.Didnt sleep much though as was suffering from lower back pain.Anyways I will retry again ton.One thing I realised about the Resmed masks (Quattro and F10) is it feels very cold.My face skin gets icy and my nose feels very cold like I have been outside on a cold winters night.I haven't seen that with the Resperonics ComfortFull 2 and ComfortGel Blue. Why?Is it because of leaks?Though I didn't feel air blowing into my eyes due to leakage nor puffs or hisses around my cheeks. Its very strange.I can't imagine it to be a good thing.Gona get a cold or flu.Is it because of leaks or the design of the mask?It also feels very cold at my chest area.I sleep with a blanket but still feels so cold there. My cpap alarm doesn't go off showing major leakage.I don't use a humidifier so its difficult to predict if dry mouth is due to leaks or just air that normally flows like with all masks I have used before. My cpap didn't come with one.Could it be due to air escaping under mouth area?Though I kept my mouth closed as i was awake.Alarm also don't give leak alarm.I use a Resmed Astral 150 Ventilator prescribed from my Pulmonologyst.
ChicagoGranny and Okie bipap I'm still looking out for a nice cervical collar at my local pharmacys.

Try a mask liner. Google Padacheek or Remzzz. From your photo it looks like you've got a substantial jaw like I do, mask fit could be problematic. if you haven't tried a chinstrap give the Ruby Chinstrap a shot if you think your jaw is dropping. Many people prefer a cervical collar which I think you mentioned earlier.Firefox wrote:.One thing I realised about the Resmed masks (Quattro and F10) is it feels very cold.My face skin gets icy and my nose feels very cold like I have been outside on a cold winters night.I
Maybe try the humidifier again.Firefox wrote:.I don't use a humidifier so its difficult to predict if dry mouth is due to leaks or just air that normally flows like with all masks I have used before.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

If you can't find one, Firefox, you can try to make your own to try. You need something that will keep your chin up and your head from tilting forward. You don't care too much about tilting to the side. Here's what I have used: A piece of cushion foam 2 inches thick by about 8 inches long and 3.5 inches tall, wrapped in a scarf and fastened around the neck so that the foam sits at the front of the neck. Another member here made a "brandy keg", a round piece of foam with a hole though the middle that looked to be about 4 inches in diameter that was held in place at the front of the neck by a strap passed through the hole and around the neck. A small pillow might work. Take a look around and see if you can find something.Firefox wrote:ChicagoGranny and Okie bipap I'm still looking out for a nice cervical collar at my local pharmacys.

This one is not firm, but it will work. You might have to replace it more often than the firm foam collars. It might also need to be adjusted a little higher to compensate for being softer.

Re: New FF mask for mouth breather
After 10 years using a Quattro Mirage FFM I switched to an Amara View FFM Minimum Contact mask. Took a week or so to get it adjusted properly but it is very comfortable. The instructions say it works best if your mouth is slightly open. That is the way I sleep so it isn't a problem.

No, the instructions don't say that. They say to have your mouth slightly open when fitting the mask.ClayL wrote:The instructions say it works best if your mouth is slightly open.
If you can sleep most of the night with your mouth closed, CPAP will work better, and it is healthier to breathe through the nose.
