Cough Related to Apnoea

Post by ashish » Wed Jun 03, 2015 11:46 am

Hi team,

My mother is 55 years old, she has sleep apnoea, we have purchased CPAP (Resmed Autoset S9) + Humidifier + Full face mask two years ago, She was helped a lot, but lately it seems that the machine is not helping, she is facing the same issue once again. Also she is coughing all the day(dry cough). I checked on internet, it says, there might be probability of cough along with sleep apnoea. Is any one facing the same issue, if yes how are you trying to diagnose it?

Is she using the humidifier?

Does she smoke? Have allergies?

Has her doctor recently tested her for respiratory and/or cardiac problems which may have nothing to do with OSA?

Coughing alone is not a particular symptom of apnea, and if she's coughing during the day, it's more likely something else is going on.

Are you reading the display on the machine regularly to check her AHI, leak and other efficacy data?

Is she using a nasal mask or a full face mask?

What city does she live in?

The machine which she is using is Autoset, and i can only see the pressure which is 4.0,

There was instance of leak in the mask, then we replaced the mask

"Hay fever" is known to be worse this season than in previous years and that may have some bearing, but she needs to see a doctor... and we're not doctors, but a day long cough is highly UNlikely to be caused by Cpap or OSA.

Actually i have consulted with a doctor as well. Did all type of tests. did not get any result, And the cough is not accompanied with any thing else. However i read an article in internet that cough could begun because of sleep apnoea.

dry cough is a side effect of some blood pressure medications.

You should find this helpful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lpC5LDFc8w

I cannot emphasize enough how important this data has been to many of us.

Also, if she is using a nasal mask and breathing through the mouth, even for short periods, the mouth and/or throat can dry out. Does she report any dry mouth at night?

Lisinopril is a common cause of a persistent dry cough. (Or other meds)
If any of her meds could be causing the cough, her PCP may be able to try alternatives.

I had a chronic cough caused by post nasal drip. It started right after a bad cold and just never quit. Turns out that acid reflux can cause this problem. Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there.

Is she taking lisinopril or any blood pressure medicine that is an ace inhibitor. This class of drugs can cause a nasty chronic hacking cough that won't go away. She should ask her doctor if her BP meds are causing her cough.
