Flu shot time again

Post by SleepingBearDoNtWake » Tue Sep 04, 2012 8:01 pm

Hello,
I know that many disagree over the flu shot, and I won't get into that, but for those of you who need it, the CDC said to get it as early as you can, and not to fear the vaccination becoming less effective.
I will be getting mine this week.

Flu shots.

Cheap insurance.

A very good thing.

You do not want type A influenza, and that's that.

Good poll btw (and, without being too judgmental, there just might be some polls hereabouts that are tad bit superfluous).

I get one every year. I teach 120 adorable little germ balls (aka: college students) every term, and I need all the help I can get!

Never get the flu. Started getting flu shots several years ago on the advice of my doctor, and still don't get the flu.

So it goes.

You didn't have an option for those of us who will be getting it for the second time?

My historic reason for not getting it was how I react to the arm-stabby portion of various shots. But last year, after not having any issues (beyond a sore arm) with a tetanus shot and my first Gardasil shot I decided to go for the flu shot. And I almost passed out. Oops. Nurses really don't like it if you do that in their office. I fended off the Ensure by telling them I'd go to the Second Cup downstairs for cake and a steamer, and for each of the three shots I've had since then, they now have me lie down first. And instead of going to the lobby to wait for a few minutes before leaving, they put up the rails on the side and watch me lay on a stretcher in the corner, and sit on it, and otherwise make the process a little more time consuming because they don't want me to fall and hit my head. But I'm still getting my flu shot this year, mere colds on CPAP are bad enough.

I only take them when I'm required to to keep a contract. I always seem to get sick when I get them, but don't when I don't take them. Besides, I'd prefer to be vaccinated on the CURRENT years' strain not what they think it will be based on last years' strain.

I just got mine Saturday. And now under the new healthcare law ...preventive care so $0 copayment for my visit.

Arm hurt a little bit so I took aspirin and it went away. It's cheap insurance from a nasty illness.

Ughhh the flu on CPAP must me horrible. How could one even use it?

What does coughing/sneezing do to a CPAP? Do the algorythms account for colds, etc. or do the machines think you are having an 'episode' and ramp up?

I'm one of the "No" people. I had the flu so often as a kid, like multiple times per year, gawd I was sick a lot. I'd get the flu shots back then and was guaranteed to get sick. Since then, around early high school, well, NEVER. I think I have developed an immunity to every "H" and "N" there is plus ones that don't exist, in fact, I think they could use my blood to create a super vaccine

My neighbour died from the flu a few years ago.... One day he was there on his front porch saying hello, a couple of days later he was dead.
I now get them every year. This year it will be very important as I am looking after my 80+ year old parents with health issues.

I will get one next week when I see my PCP. The world is due for a influenza pandemic, and it's better to be safe than sorry...or dead.

I do. It works. Everyone who gets it adds to our "herd immunity".
This helps protect those who choose not to be inoculated;
even while they knowingly endanger the health of the rest of us.
Thank you.

Had the flu (but no shots) twice in 50+ years, last time right after I arrived in the US - must be foreign germs.....

After a heart attack & T2 diabetes diagnosis, have been getting a flu shot every year on the advice of my cardio and endo.

No flu in 14yrs and can't remember the last time I had a regular cold.

Cheers,
xena

Sorry -- but I always wait until around mid-November because the Flu never hits here in Virginia until January/February time frame. And the shots are only good for 3-4 months.
