software
I am new but from what I gather, the software allows you to read the data that the machines gather that ordinarily just goes to the doctor. Not all machines have a lot of data. Some seem to have only compliance data (that it was used for so many hours) and others seem to have a lot more such as what pressure was used, if there were mask leaks, how many apneas and hypopneas you had.
Mostly what I see people suggesting is to get a machine that can tell you the more detailed data. Then you get the software as well so you can moniter yourself better. Doctors are often busy and some simply won't know as much as you once you have studied all this stuff for a while. So they may not really pay much attention to the data or simply not ask for it. However, if your having trouble adjusting to the machine, or suddenly feeling tired again after having adjusted, you can check the data to see if something is wrong and get better treatment when you call your doctor.
I hope this helps.
Oh - and why it isn't supplied? I don't know but I think it comes from the old way of looking at the doctor patient relationship where the doctor is "doing stuff" to an "obedient patient" instead of the more common model of an involved patient/doctor team.

Hello & Welcome, lorarose! Glad you found this forum--SO much useful info and SO many helpful people here!
Most (all?) of us here know we must have the card, card reader, and software in order to track our therapy. I used CPAP for a year and a half before I found this forum and learned about data. During that year, I had no useful therapy, since my titrated pressure (from my sleep study) was way too low, and my AHI was around 10 (needs to be 5 or less). After I found this forum, got my software and card/card reader, I discovered why my CPAP just wasn't helping me at all. Then, I got an auto titrating machine, and my numbers are very good! And, more importantly, I feel great! Data is a must have!

AND the Resmed S8 IIs, which includes the new VPAP Auto and VPAP Auto 25 can NOT be recognized by ResScan 3.3 or less. ResScan 3.4 will recognize the S8 IIs but is not compatable w/Vista. You will need ResScan 3.5 for Vista.

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember

If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

thanks for all the above. is the software the chip type of card that goes in the back i had 1 for 2 weeks then had to send it back but wasnt told i needed to do it again or i could keep track this way. i dont realy understand how i get below 5 and is that the pressure it pumps out. iv been using my machine since april i kind of feel better i can keep the mask on all night and hate sleeping without it. this forum as helped a lot some examples are, swallowing air , i use a wedge pillow now, clipping the hose to bed covers i dont get leaks and mask fits better so thanks for that everybody

lorarose,
The software reads the smart card (that chip-type card). The card just transports data from the machine to the computer.
I'm not sure what you were referring to with the 5 question.

when i switch my machine back on (before mid day) it tells me the pressure i think this is the AHI well mine mine is around 10. if the pressure is the same thing as AHI how do i lower it (sorry if its complicated but im newish and still learning)

Try this:
Hold down the left and right arrow buttons for about 5 seconds. The LCD screen will change to read Efficacy data. Press the enter button. This will show read PRESSURE. Press the Down arrow. The LCD will read LEAK. Press the down arrow. The LCD will read AHI. Press the down arrow. The LCD will read AI. Press the down arrow. The LCD will read HI. What are these values?
If its after 12PM you can press the left arrow button and it will show you the weekly average instead of the daily.
AHI and pressure are different things. The AHI is the average number of apneas and hypopneas you have per hour. Pressure is the force of the air the CPAP send to your body to help keep your airway clear and inflated.
If your AHI is 10, it does need to come down.
Check your leak rate. See above. If it is high (anything above 0.1), your mask is not fitting correctly and need to be adjusted. By the way, that 0.1 number is my preference, others have different opinions about what is acceptable.
If the leak rate is good, it may be that your titration is not correct (this has happened to a lot of people here). This will involve you changing the pressure your machine delivers. Its not hard to do.
