ASV Study Results
My Doctor messaged me late yesterday and again today. ASV cleared my issues right up on the dedicated study. my AHI on the ASV unit was a 2.3, I slept 5.2 Hours. I had an excellent Dream Sleep, and entered Deep SLeep for 90 minutes, and my SpO2 didnt drop below a 95%, so I wont need supplemental O2 at this time but wants me to consult with my PCP about having Oxygen on hand for my headaches, as it almost cleared the headache instantly, but hopes after some time on the ASV the headaches stay away.
I am being prescribed a ResMed AirCurve 10 ASV, Humidifier, Heated Hose, and making sure I get an F20 Mask, or something better fitting with the higher pressures Ill have with the ASV. I have to return the DreamStation when I get the word to pick up the new machine, and get a drop off slip, as I am firing Lincare and going with a small Local Company called Sound Oxygen Supply, who wants my business, and knows already how my clinic works.. Machine will be set for full auto mode, but she is finalizing pressures now. She pulled the last week off the rental machine (old system one BiPap) and they were better than the CPAP but the ASV was far better, said only one central showed up. She also said to give it 2-3 weeks as the machine learns my breathing, before losing hope it isnt working..

Re: ASV Study Results
Good luck with the Aircurve 10 ASV. It is a good machine to treat central apneas and obstructive apneas.
I don't think the machine 'learns your breathing' over time and changes settings by itself. Maybe the physician will be modifying the ASVauto settings remotely?
You can use SleepyHead software to monitor your statistics.
With ASVauto wide open, it can be quite a ride.
Maybe the physician will adjust Min EPAP to Med EPAP reported statistics after a day or two and adjust Min PS and Max PS to your needs. The best settings for you will ultimately require your subjective feed back about how you feel during the day and what bothers you about the therapy, if anything.
Post some Sleepyhead charts and maybe some of the ASV experts can help out a bit.
Best of luck!

you're quite right about that, the machine never learns anything, ever. all it does is respond to immediate circumstances based on it's programming and settings.klv329 wrote:I don't think the machine 'learns your breathing' over time and changes settings by itself. every time the machine starts up whether by button press or smart start, it's a whole new beginning.

But it makes the patient feel better instead of saying "it may take a bit of time for your body to adjust and learn to trust the machine".palerider wrote:the machine never learns anything, ever. all it does is respond to immediate circumstances based on it's programming and settings.

I'm betting that the next evo/revolution in cpap therapy will be a machine that *does* learn, and adjusts itself over time based on data from previous sessions. Resmed is nibbling at that with the 'for her' mode, where it raises the minimum pressure if there are multiple apneas within a period of time...

Re: ASV Study Results
Thanks for the clarification. I talked with the new DME saying they should hear tomorrow from the clinic. I asked a few questions and they also clarified saying it wont learn, but they will either make the adjustments or have the clinic make the adjustments during the initial startup month. It depends on how she writes the prescription. The new DME is a Seattle Based operation of 7 stores, and they have a dedicated in house team if Compliance people and "monitors".
Basically saying don't give up in the first few weeks as it may be a wild ride till they figure out where the machine needs set. They have a baseline from my test. I do remember having to cinch up my mask a bit and listen to it fart for a bit if I laid on my side, I feel my firm pillow will make it worse. So the DME is ordering me a Special Pillow as well that will cost me minimal. It's not a cutaway pillow but a pillow filled with corn husk apparently. Stays cool, and won't knock the mask around much. Say they sell a bunch of them.
Already I know in with a better company then Lincare, I am dreading the day I return the DreamStation, but will just say my clinic decided to deal with one local DME. And say my goodbyes as I skip out the door to my rig. The nice part is I can leave the rental Sys 1 at the DME and they will return it to my clinic free.
Hope to have it tomorrow or Monday. Gonna download the manual and see how different this beast is.

Re: ASV Study Results
I anticipate that you will likely experience some rather high but brief pressure increases so planning the fitting for leak prevention at those higher pressures may be a bit of a challenge.
Part of "you adjusting to the machine"
That's how it breathes for you when you have a central...big burst of air but it doesn't stay up there very long. Hopefully you will sleep through it.

Re: ASV Study Results
During the test apparently I had 24 "central" events i slept thru. I do remember getting punched in my face one time. The biggest part was at the beginning a tiny inhale resulted in a lung filling blast of air. But I adjusted quickly and knocked off fairly fast.
The only issue I have currently on the rental BiPap is now I'm falling asleep within 10 minutes but waking up at 430 and not able to get back to sleep without taking the mask off. No SD card in the unit to share or see what's up in Sleepyhead.

Re: ASV Study Results
You could have used any SD card if you wanted to. Didn't have to be an official SD card from machine brand.

I never thought of grabbing the one in the Dream station but honestly I have a ton of micro SD cards and no adaptors and the only one SD card I had has about 14k songs on it. Lol

That's okay...no need to worry about it now and you will be getting rid of this AirCurve soon anyway.
We could put a card in now and you would have some summary data available but it would be pretty much what is available on the LCD screen now.
Do remember when you get the AirCurve ASV...the SD card HAS to be in the machine during the night or you won't have any detailed data available.
The only thing it stores on the internal memory is the summary numbers...all the detailed stuff (which is what is needed for all those graphs) has to go directly onto the SD card.
So if you pull the card to use the software but sure to put the card back in the machine before you use it.
Can't tell you how many times I have gone to pull the SD card and realized it was still in the computer and of course it always happened on a night that I really wanted to see the details.

maybe put a big orange dayglow tape flag on the SD card so you'll see that sticking out of the computer...Pugsy wrote:Can't tell you how many times I have gone to pull the SD card and realized it was still in the computer and of course it always happened on a night that I really wanted to see the details.
maybe we should go into business selling CPAP SD cards with "PUT ME BACK IN THE DANG CPAP" flags on them

I've not familiar with the corn husk filled pillow but love my buckwheat hull filled pillow. When side sleeping, I just move some hulls around to form a hole for my P10.RestlessinWoolley wrote:.... but a pillow filled with corn husk apparently. Stays cool, and won't knock the mask around much. ...
Please let us know what pillow you get. I'll have to Google the corn husk filled pillow. Always in search for the holy grail. Earl

After doing this several times, I learned to leave a post-it note on the cpap machine. So, when I get ready for bed, I open the drawer, see the post-it, and retrieve the card from the computer.
