Good white noise machine?

That's the problem for me. I need the noise to go to sleep. My s9 makes no noise that I can hear and my wife can't hear it either.

I've been using these machines for YEARS, maybe even more than a decade.

I have a 2nd generation iPod Shuffle--it's about 1 X 1/2 inches big and clips to my pj's. I put one earbud in (aftermarket--the IPod earbuds HURT) and listen to podcasts when I'm having trouble sleeping. This way my husband doesn't complain about my choice of "white noise".

For about 99 cents, you can download a couple of hours of relaxing sounds from Amazon--I have ocean waves. You can load multiple copies of those on your iPod or other MP3 player so that it will play all night, but I sleep better with the podcasts for some reason (except the occasional loud and sudden noise will wake me). I also have made a playlist of my favorite music that's kind of soft and mellow to use to sleep with. But the podcasts work the best--it's not that they are boring--I love listening to them when I'm awake too--mostly NPR stuff like Radio Lab and This American Life.

I don't need the white noise to drown out my machine--it's VERY quiet, and now that I have a hose huggie on the FX slinky hose I don't hear that Darth Vader conducted noise sound anymore. But the white noise relaxes me and helps me sleep when I'm stressed.

I listen to audio books on my MP3 player. I still enjoy bedtime stories.

I have an APP on my iPhone called WhiteNoise. It has different sounds like a fan running, air condition running, waves lapping on the beach, extreme rain falling, train ride, and several others. The APP is free.

The Marpac unit is great. Wife used to use a fan, problem with the fan is it keeps dust stirred up, makes the blinds move & bang and it's too bulky to travel with. The Marpac Sleepmate is compact, has a long cord, has a good protective cushion on the bottom, no dust, doesn't create any other noises, you don't have to clean it like a fan. They are a well made product too, should never have to buy another one. Wal-Mart fans seem to only be good for about 2 years of constant use.

And if you are married to Martha Stewart Rooster, you are not going to get away with a WalMart box fan sitting out in the bedroom. But if you are good, she might allow a Marpac.
