i am a self-confessed total vicks addict, been since i was 4 or so. i dont use it much at night now since i have been on cpap as i didnt want my nasal pillows damaged. i am going to try the cotton ball under the air intake thing though.

this pur sleep thing, can one get this in australia? i have been looking, albiet not to hard because i live in such a remote area, but it sounds very cool. i am new to this only been on therapy since nov last year.

fyi-i keep vicks in my handbag, never leave home without it. i have been a community social worker for longer than i will admit, its great to pop some into your nostrils if you have to go into someones house that has 40 cats or something equally as nasty . inhale and no icky smells just releif! whenever i have supervised s SW student, i always present them with a bottle of vicks, then take them to a cat ladies house, they learn quick......

for decongestant with vicks, rub it on your chest like its says on the bottle then place a heated wet flannel (washcloth) over it and it works wonders. i usually heat the flannel in the microeave, but not for too long or its too hot.

well those are my dragon tips for today!

cheers all-GVD

The FDA won't let Vicks Vaporub claim that is a decongestant because the manufacturer cannot show that it is an effective decongestant.

Vaporub has been shown to be an effective cough suppressant and the FDA has approved that claim.

Many people also swear that rubbing Vaporub on the bottom of the feet is very effective at stopping coughs.

I love Vicks! It's a comfort thing for me. Whether it's psychosomatic or not, rubbing it on my chest/neck and around my nose when I don't feel good just makes me feel better. I love the idea of putting some by the intake filter. I've often wondered how I could smell the vicks with my mask on!

Wow, if rubbing it on the bottom of the feet controls coughing, I wonder if rubbing it on the bottom would stop anal exhalations?

I dug out a bottle of Vicks I have had a while and sure enough the bottle I have states it is a nasal decongestion. I am in the states so at one time they had it on their labels.

i used vicks in my nose while using a cpap. my wife said she thought she read not to do that so i made myself research for future the cpap fraternity. also my mother always used vicks on our chest. my uncle used to swallow a tablespoon when he got a cold. of course he is dead now hopefully not from the vicks though. im sure it was a combination of spraying wd 40 on his forehead for headaches and duct taping potatos to sores to " draw the poison out". memories were brought back reading the campbells soup and crackers and dont forget the ORANGE HI C in the metal cans.

It that time of the year and I'm coming down with a cold with congestion.
Noticed that my AHI # has gone up a little, thinking on raising the upper pressure a little with more humidity to see if it makes a difference.
Do AHI usally increase with congestion?

Anything that blocks your nasal passages will general decrease the effectiveness of cpap therapy because the blockage in your nose will cause more pressure drop to the part of your airway you are trying to keep open. Its physics. If you are using an APAP, and not flat-lining the upper pressure, it is more likely the lower pressure that is causing your issue.

That has been my experience.

Doing what you are proposing is generally a good idea. On a similar note, a local sleep doc advises his patients to do that when they have a cold.

Even if your AHI has only gone up a bit, raising the pressure with more humidity will help with comfort.

I get stuffy nose all the time. A nasal mask was insufficient for me. Pillows works better for me and forces the air into my nostrils. Perhaps a mask change is due for you?

I have used Vick's on my nose without CPAP but prefer Mentholatum because it just feels less harsh. Vick's seems to have more camphor or something that I need in smaller doses. I don't know if I would use the CPAP and Vick's because if it gets in your eyes it would not be pleasant. Since I'm one of those people that would probably get it in my eyes, I just wouldn't.

Also, I have used Vick's on the soles of my feet (after a hot bath) and then put on clean socks before bed and within 15 minutes my cough was suppressed enough for sleep. I've worked this black magic on my kids as well. Snopes.com classifies this as Unproven, but maybe those people at Snopes didn't have pointy hats and ride a broom.

Vick's does not help with congestion, it only tricks your brain into feeling relief.

I have to agree about getting vicks vapour rub near the eye area, I'm thinking putting a little on on the intake air filter and when done throwing filter out and replacing with a new one.
I do not think it will harm the machine?

Better then Vicks is Tiger balm. Put some near the air intake.

Do not put Vicks near your mask like on your nose. It is a petroleum based product and not good for the mask.

Why not just put the open container behind the intake?
