No Bill, I too am just a user of their products, and those of Resmed, Tiara and occasionally Respironics.

I am however a respecter of ethical practice. And while there may be no legal reason for Resmed to acknowledge the value of F&Ps discovery, morally it would be the right thing to do.

Obviously, you differ, as is your right.

As far as anyone can tell, the Opus and Swift II are concurrent designs from their respective manufacturers, and both came to market at pretty much the same time.

Sorry Bill,

Far be it from me to question the ethics of Resmed, but Fisher and Paykel have been using the "little holes that make it quiet" for a darn sight longer than Resmed.

In fact, if memory serves, Resmed have only ever used the holes once, and that was to make the new Swift II quieter.

Yep, that's called copying, which led me to make the comment to which you seemed to take exception.

The Opus mask is very similar to the Infinity 481. Anyone who has a 481 can easily make an Opus knockoff with this simple modification:

Secure the tube under a loop formed by one of the two velcro straps on the top band. Also decenter the buckle holding the two straps so that the tube is secured dead center between my eyes.

Using this fix I found the Infinity a workable mask, although I prefer the Twilight NP (Aura).

One big improvement of the Opus over the Infinity 481, however, is that the flimsy clips which attach the side straps to the nosepiece have been replaced with two thick white straps.

I have used Infinity (recently, in fact) and the nasal pillows on the Infinity are significantly different than Opus.

Infinity nasal pillows are quite shaped, have a flange (think I'm using the right word) which creates some friction seal INSIDE the nare and has a very flat outer seal which (in my case) can bite a bit against the skin just under the nose.

The Opus has nasal pillows that are oval and conical in shape like the Swift. There is NO flange on the Opus pillow that seals inside the nare. Opus is significantly more forgiving on the nose due to head movement during sleep.

The swivel on Opus is a better design that Infinity. I tried routeing the Infinity hose up over my head (using Velcro) and found that the swivel would not tolerate the degree of angle needed. Routeing the hose up caused the nasal pillows to loose stability and irritated my nares. Opus, is designed to allow the hose to route up and the nasal pillows stay in place.

I liked Infinity, but find that it is way too intolerant of movement during sleep. If one sleeps on his/her back and does not roll, Infinity could be a great choice. If one rolls some, Opus is fine.

I cannot tell from your photos in your previous post, are the pillows "slanted" toward each other as much as the swift?
My nares are a little more parallel and I found the swifts positioning of them not to my liking but I guess I am the exception on this. Obviously on the breeze I could rotate them the way I wanted.....

Thanks for the clarification. I am glad to hear the F&P made changes in the design of their pillows.

My experience with the Infinity pillows was very similar to yours. The sharp edges could cause considerable pain in the nares.

The Opus nasal pillows are of a slanted design like the Swift. The do not have the benefit of adjustment like the Breeze does.

Opus nasal pillows seem to be of softer silicone (thinner?) than the Swift pillows. Swift quite hurt my nares when I would lay on my side whereas Opus seems to be more forgiving -->little to no nare irritation.

I've given my Swift away (it went in the mail today) to a person in the US who does not have insurance. I'm hopeful that he finds it comfortable. I can't see buying another Swift now that I have tried Opus.

How does the Opus compare to the Swift with respect to the direction of the exhaust? If I sleep on my side, my wife complains about the Swift exhaust blowing on her. By contrast, this isn't a problem when I use the ComfortCurve. Will I (actually, my wife) see an improvement with the Opus?

I am a newbie - almost 2 months now. The CL2 is the only mask I have used. I am looking/researching for a second mask. I have 2 others in mind but really like the looks of the Opus. The nasal pillow looks very similar to the CL2 and I like the simplicity with no headgear on the forehead as in the CL2. I really like the CL2 but I do not like the head gear. In an earlier post you mentioned they were similar but did not elaborate. Could you please give me a more detailed comparison. I may just wait until Opus is available.

Too may choices!!!

I have given my Swift away to someone on this site, so I can't do a good comparison for you. However, whereas Swift has a single bar of several holes, Opus has a grid pattern of many, many small holes. To my recollection, Swift blasted the exhaust (although NOT the jet-stream of Breeze) whereas Opus is a very soft, diffuse exhaust.
I'm told (feel free to read between the lines) that Opus exhaust is not as far-reaching nor forceful as was Swift.

Stoverquill:
CL2 headgear is on your forehead and around your head. Opus headgear is minimal around your head but noticeable on your cheeks. You rob Peter to pay Paul...

Overall, I am really liking Opus. I just received the heated hose two days ago and with it, I'm liking Opus even more. However, like Swift, I find that Opus is not the best mask if you are a side sleeper. Flat on my back with no moving around, Opus is so lightweight and comfortable that I don't even know it is there. When I roll around, I notice it some.

CL2 (with the little bit of fishing-line adjustment to the nasal pillow section) is also wonderfully comfortable and, in my opinion, more stable than Opus during rolling around.

I don't have any regrets buying Opus and think that it will be the mask that I take when I next travel as it is so small and lightweight.
