Reccomendation for full face mask

Post by mrsstats » Thu Sep 14, 2006 7:33 pm

I have only been on cpap for about 2 months. I am looking for a full face mask that is quite. I am a side sleeper and my pressure is set at 12. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't have it but... the Fisher & Paykel FlexiFit™431 Full Face Mask

looks like a good canidate.

I have the Ultra Mirage Full Face and it WILL leak sleeping on your side. And the leaking wakes me up.

I am currently using the Active nasal mask. Works well for side sleepers.

Hopefully someone with the Fisher & Paykel FlexFit 431 will tune in and let us know.

Masks I have used (this year 2006):

A) Nasal Interface
1) Adams Circuit
2) Swift
3) ComfortLite 2

B) Full Face
1) Ultra Mirage FF
2) HC431
3) Hybrid

Best for side sleeping, in this group are the CL2 and Hybrid.

+ Aussie heated hose.

ComfortLite 2

Post by sleepyred » Fri Sep 15, 2006 5:29 am

I used the ComfortLite 2 and never could stop the leaks.

To me, the verdict is still out on the hybrid, from what I've been reading.

I've had the best luck with the activa for side sleeping, but that's not a FF mask.

I'm a side sleeper also and I use the Ultra Mirage FF mask with little leakage. It took a little bit of adjusting to get it to work, but when I had a leak, my DME told me to tighten the straps on the opposite sides of where the leaks were and they'd stop. It worked. What I mean is, if I had air leaking around the right eye, I adjusted the left upper strap and the right lower strap. Also, I read the advice on here about making sure your face was clean so now I make sure I wash my face with warm (hot)water before putting on my mask.

I ALSO USE THE UMFF MASK AND I AM A SIDE SLEEPER. I PUT A HEADBAND DOWN OVER THE MASK LOW NEAR THE NOSTRIL AREA AND IT REALLY STABILIZES THE MASK AND KEEPS THE LEAKS DOWN. PAT

I think the Hybrid is worth trying. It is one great mask.

I have been using the F&P 431 for almost three months - and I've tried almost every type/kind of mask out there - including the hybrid. While the hybrid shows promise - it has been extremely finicky to get the right fit - I have some "work" to do before I'll endorse it. That being said, the F&P 431 is the mask I wear to get a good night's sleep - and I sleep on my side, and on my stomach. I have the occasional leak (mask fart) but this mask is the best of all the ff mask out there in my opinion. I'm on a setting of 17cm so I know all about high pressure issues. Try the 431 - and good luck...

Try the Fisher & Paykel Flexi-fit.
Don't even think about the hybrid.

I have the hybrid, umff and flexifit 431 and the flexifit worked for me the best - BY FAR- I really like how you have 3 different choices of sizes - I alternate between the medium and large which really lessens the soreness on the bridge of my nose - good luck

Recommendation

Post by UCFgrl » Fri Sep 15, 2006 9:37 pm

One thing I have learned from reading posts on this site is that everyone is different. So while it is great to get recommendations on which is the best mask, until you get fitted, you really never know. For example, I knew that I would be uncomfortable with a full face or even a nasal mask. When I first got my machine, they sent me a Comfort Gel and I traded it in for a Swift b/c I thought it would work better for me. I was fitted and it worked ok, but being that I am a side sleeper, it was not as comfortable as I would like it to be. I had to go for a follow-up visit and they had a therapist there to help me (who was genuinely concerned about my issues unlike many of these DMEs that just provide the products and don't really care). She did a refit right there. I tried several full face masks and found that I could not get a good seal (I had my machine there to help test). We then tried nasal masks and they were ok. I had already done my research and asked if it were possible to get a Comfort Lite 2 b/c it offers flexibility between nasal mask and nasal pillows as well as being good for side sleepers. I would have never thought that I would be so excited for a new mask. Not to mention that it was delivered the very next day which totally amazed me. I too searched for recommendations, but unless you know that your insurance is going to pay for anything and eveything or you want alot of out pocket costs, you need to be refitted and take your machine w/ you to make sure it works. There is nothing like ordering a mask and not being able to get a good seal then not being able to return it!

full face mask ?

Post by whatrdreamsmadeof » Sat Sep 16, 2006 7:54 pm

hi, i just went to a full face mask to see if it would help with a swollen face.........it's all about fit, i would have loved to have the fisher paykel ff mask but it wouldn't fit me in any size.......the hybrid was too big with any size too....and bottom heavy... i did get the resperonic full face mask and slept about 5 hours with it the first nite..........some leak but i'm sure in a week or so it will be working better......just needs adjusting........i do think the fisher pakel is the lightest.....i was lucky my sleep lab took 2 hours fitting me with my machine and then gave me one..free............6 months after the sleep study...they took pity on me i guess since my dme is a jerk...try them all at a center with your machine on...full pressure...they are tricky but worth it.. oh yeah i am still swelling in the face though? who knows just another challenge in the road to apap...good luck ellen

Been using the UMFF for over 2 years, still the best mask I've tried, most comfortable and the quietest of all I've tried.

Others I've tried:

Resmed Activa
Resmed UltraMirageII
Resmed UltraMirage

The duds:
Resmed Swift
Breeze
NasalAire
Respironics Comfort Lite
Respironics Comfort Classic
Resmed Vista
Hybrid

Excellent summary. Posters have always been helpful with the mask that 'works for them' BUT without a good fitting by the sleep lab or DME, chances are you are on your own. Be prepared to dole out your own $$ for a new mask under the rubric of 'trial and error'. It is unfortunate this is the norm for most people. Good luck and hopefully you won't start another private collection of masks that had all sorts of promise but did not work for you.
